I was driving home the other night with my dog's and we just pulled into the driveway when this song came on. We sat in the car listening to it and I have listened to it everyday since. Such a beautiful song.

That once in a lifetime came for me in the mid 60's. We were in elementary when we met and we went together almost through high school. She met someone else and that was the end of our relationship. I still love her to this day and I think about her every day.

As I listen to this beautiful piece of music it brings thoughts of my daughter I lost a few years ago at a very young age. She loved Ronnie and we would listen together to his tapes when we were in the car and she always wanted to go to Nashville to see him. This song brings her right back into the room with me, the music is magic.

ronnie sings so soft and sweet for most this song but when the verb of the song comes up, he uses his V-12 horsepower voice to change the whole dynamic of the song and drive it home - what an awesome talent - thanks for sharing it, Ron sc

I`m a metal fan but grew up to these great powerful old country tunes...some days I`m stuck listening to "new" country at work and it is such silly predictable music, you can almost guess the next verse even if you`re hearing the song for the first time....the old stuff had soooo much more talent and emotion....by the way, keep in mind that I am a rock/metal music fan.....thank you..

Among Ronnie Milsap's best works, great innovation, one of my 1st Milsap memories, and rightfully his biggest hit at the time. (It should've won every conceivable award on the planet & topped all the charts!) An even bigger tearjerker than "(I'd Be) A Legend in my Time," esp. when I listen to my cassette. Ronnie & company also know how to make synths worth listening to! This is one song I don't dare touch! I can't believe he doesn't do this in full! He's the King of Country-Pop to me & eclectic!

I was traveling with two wonderful friends who were musicians. We danced as he held me in his arms... to this very song... I fell hard for the guy but it was not meant to be at the time. I have longed for him for 35 years. I found him early Oct. 2014. He will be here for two weeks at Christmas... This song is exactly the story of 'us'... when we speak it's like yesterday...

Sophia Lynne, this song is special to me about a girl I fell in love with in 1980. We worked together and spent everyday together also. We went on one date and we kissed for the first time and fell in love that night. That night was the last time I saw her. She died in an automobile accident and this song always will remind me of our short love story.

What an amazing song. I remember playing it in clubs when it came out, and then later being lucky enough to open for Millsap for many of his 77-79 shows nationwide. However.......and this is my opinion only.......this was released during the POP COUNTRY era, and as such, the studio production is so SLICK and SMOOTH that it overshadows the strong lyrical content of the piece. When Ronnie would perform it live (without studio tricks, orchestra, and choir) the song became an extremely powerful and moving performance.

It's simple - just before Ronnie was born, the Lord said "Ronnie, you can be an ordinary guy, with all your facilties and senses, or you can be one of the best singers I've ever put on earth, but for that I'll need to have your sight - which is it, Bud? Thank God, for us, Ronnie chose the latter. sc

I think that this was likely THE earliest use, certainly the first to result in a hit; this marked the beginning of significant change in country music. Despite the ignorance of many mainstream fans, the genre as everybody knew it began to end; for better or for worse depending on whom one asks, as purists will bash Ronnie to his grave over it. I myself don't think that's bad, and in fact it's one of my favorites from him (and believe me, there were lots to choose from; nostalgia had to help).

@Scott Harrison, true story for many! No one knows what another’s heart truly feels, I had left my husband when my someone special came along & we were so in love! But circumstances involved my child & I felt I was obligated to return to his Dad for him. I was honest and told husband I was in love with another & my son was the only reason I was coming back, for him to fully understand the situation! He didn’t care about how I felt as long as I was back to take care of everything! My heart has cried for 34 years! Only 1 friend knew who I was truly in love with, because others had never met him! If they had seen us together, it was obvious! The fire was slowly created but the flame has never gone out! Still crying!

@yankeegirl7777 , Amusing? No, it’s sad! Idk the circumstances of why you wish you had never met that someone, but everything you experience is a Life Lesson! I, too, have one I wish I had never met, but there is the special one that came into my life that my heart has cried for every night! I am glad that special one came along but I didn’t realize how much I could be “in love” for a long time, because of the one I wish I had never met! It’s been 8 years since you posted your reply, 10/01/2020 now, I hope you have found the special one! Keep your heart open but keep it safe!

Yes, but that wasn't the point. Even the most mainstream-sounding works prior at least had significant country influences that went beyond a few notes. Even "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" had notable country influences (Elvis's version of "Blue Moon of Kentucky" was rejected by R&B stations for being "too country." Here, it's most detectable characteristics were mainstream in sound & nature; it's no coincidence that in 1985, New York Times declared the genre dead; little MC was traditional.
