Enjoy the most exciting frames of each session. At just 20 years old, Ronnie and John compete in the World Championship semifinals. This is their first meeting at the Crucible, and without a doubt, this match exceeds all expectations. The old cliche "nobody deserves to lose" perfectly applies here.
This extraordinary encounter is characterised by offensive play, brave, challenging shots, hurting steals, turnarounds, and lots of drama and excitement.
Commentators: Ted Lowe and Dennis Taylor.
The statistics shown in the video correspond to the date of the match.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The controversial 2010 Higgins meeting: Information for people who had no opportunity to investigate further:
1. Mazher Mahmood, editor of the newspaper and 'gangster' in the video, was known for living performing similar traps (actors and other sports stars). In October 2016, he was jailed for a year for tampering with evidence involving a singer (a victim of his traps).
2. The original video lasted 11 minutes, but they only showed 4 min.
The video has too many cuts, answers without questions and vice versa. Moreover, they didn't keep the dialogue structure despite being professional journalists who own the raw footage. They could have excluded the moments of fear and intimidation; perhaps they brought up the topic of foreign properties, making us believe that the idea was Higgins' initiative.
3. Ian Mill KC* headed a second independent investigation―the first was led by David Douglas, former detective chief at Scotland Yard.―He had access to all original videos and audio tapes (as Douglas had). He textually concluded: "I have no doubt that the Association was right to conclude that this account by Mr Higgins was a truthful one."
His conclusion on Pat Mooney**: "he committed the most egregious betrayals of trust ".
Audiotapes revealed that Pat Mooney was aware of the 'bribery'. He told Higgins they were wealthy sponsors, and just before the meeting, he asked him to play along if the subject of match-fixing came up.
*Ian Mill KC is considered an authority in sports bribery cases in Formula 1, Football Premier League and Tennis ATP, among others. He headed the recent investigation on the ten Chinese snooker players.
**Pat Mooney, Higgins' manager in the video, was a member of the WPBSA board at that time.
- Meeting: Friday, 30 April 2010.
- Publishing: Sunday, 2 May 2010, 'coincidentally' during the final at the Crucible.
- John Higgins at the time: 34 years old, married, two children, World N°1, reigning world champion, famous and millionaire (£5 million only in prize money―£450,000 in 2009).
Statement from David Douglas: www.sportingintelligence.com/2...

I’m new to the game and have much to learn. But, in addition to the incredible talent at the table, I’d like to tip my hat to the referee for a great job of keeping the game moving and especially taming the occasionally rowdy crowd. Not only did the he experience the drama as it was happening, he was on high alert for each and every shot. For 25 ever-loving frames. Well done, sir!

Yeah I was thinking that, I think a John Higgins of post 2000's certainly wouldn't concede with 4 snookers (and a possible free ball), especially for a place in the semi's of the WC. I remember watching him back then and his tactical game was better than most even then, certainly better than Ronnie's.

Simply the greatest his main rival apart from himself was John Higgins but ya can't argue with 19 majors yes 19 then 36 ranking titles the most premier leagues the most centuries and 147s keeping hendry Higgins Williams Selby robbo ding and trump to name but a few at bay entertaining us for decades keeping snooker afloat in the most competitive era ever keeping sponsors happy and viewing figures up all on his own terms never been a slave to the game or politically perfect....... Lost 9 years of his career partying due to lack of discipline and appetite imo and still racked up these numbers his aura and presence is unique nobody like him everything he does makes headlines........ Only last year he beat judd again and robbo in the final 2 win the inaugural coral series to return to world number 1 at 43 🤔his longevity is legendary 👌

@tigerarmyrule that's fair. My argument for Higgins belonging in any group with Steve Davis is simply because of the huge shift in standards though. Higgins' era coincided with ROS, Hendry and Williams. Of course I can see another point of view that Davis would have been better himself had he grown with the standards of the 90s, rather than the 80s. Do you think Selby will surpass Higgins in titles? He isnt so far behind and there are more tournaments now.

Check out the back ground of the bribery story, dont take my word. What was released to the media was doctored tape. It was an attempt to blackmail John. World snooker got the undoctored tape which is why he wasnt banned for life unlike the guy, Pat Mooney who befriend John and then set him up. John did get a ban for not reporting the approach. I thought the same as you until I heard Johns side of the story recently.

John is my favourite snooker player. Obviously not as good a player overall as Ronnie, but I admire so much his approach to the game. He doesn't have the raw talent of Ronnie or Judd, but to me that makes him more relatable as a player, and it also makes me appreciate that much more his intelligence. There are other players on the circuit who you could say rely on brains more than natural talent, like Mark Selby for instance, but you can still compare Selby to Higgins and the difference is night and day. Even with his reliance on tactical smarts, Johns' game is still so rich and nuanced, which is testament I think to his complete mastery of the game from an intellectual point of view.
@Sebbethy
@Sebbethy 3 жыл бұрын
I think "overall" John is in deed a better player than Ronnie. He is very decent in every category you could think of. So he's better in most of the categories compared to his opponents. If you compare him to Ronnie, the only two things coming to my mind are Potting and Positonal Play (and maybe Rest play). In every other departement John is slightly better (Tactical play) or even much better (consistent form, safety play, patience, handling pressure and of course doubles :D). John seems to be more dedicated as well (he has played and by that won many more matched than Ronnie, but by winning percentage Ronnie leads). But for some reason he is not able to win the most important matches in the last few years, Ronnie is. I mean, imagine the last 3 WSC finals, if John had won them all, he would have equalled Hendry's record. I love Ronnie as a player, but I have also huge respect for the rest of the generation of 1992. Those 3 guys are snooker since Henrdy's retirement.

When did O'Sullivan start using his experienced left hand?
@CesarMuroya
@CesarMuroya 3 жыл бұрын
In round 1 of this tournament against Alain Robidoux, who publicly called him disrespectful since no one knew yet how well he played left-handed. So O'Sullivan didn't do it again during the event.

There is no talent like this now days. There’s no equivalent for these two now days. Who do we watch now like we did these two back then? They played so many great matches so many finals so many final frames and they kind of split a lot of titles in between them two and maybe Mark Williams. They don’t make them like this anymore
@kevinkattai3255
@kevinkattai3255 3 жыл бұрын
Well, a talent like Ronnie is hard to find, but there's plenty of players who can produce great matches today, especially considering the amount of players coming from Asia. Take Akani, Lisowski, Trump, Brecel. They're all who are very aggressive players and always produce interesting matches. It's also important to note that we're talking about Snooker which took place 25 years ago. From that time on a lot of things have changed - the competitions are held worldwide, going pro is much more difficult and requires much more money than it did back then. Moreover, the practice and strategies have completely changed. The pros will roughly know the odds of any shot they're about to take and make a decision based on their success rate on the shot, instead of just choosing based on the emotion.

Ronnie has nicer things to say about Higgins than the other way round. If anything Ronnie is too generous with his comments. Last time Higgins was asked about Ronnie he just said that he remembers back to when they were kids and beat him and saw him crying off to his dad. Ronnie has achieved more in the game than Higgins.

Look at the difference in weight now, compared to back then. Ronnie is a fitness freak, he loves running, he's in tip top condition and he's still the world's best. Higgins is about 5 stone heavier.

Can't look at john with any respect. Let him swallow 300 thousand in a prison cell. In no way will he ever convince me or thousands of others that he wasn't in on accepting that deal to throw frames. He let his manager take the fall. A thief AND a coward. The tape doesn't lie. His mannerisms, confidence, aloofness was clear he thought it was a legitimate criminal organization and he DEFINITELY was ready to uphold his end of the bargain.
