Sorry Sleepy Semi, But You Can't Park There!!!!

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching. Today, we are called by a local police department to help a driver who had a little bit of trouble navigating on the interstate. Honestly, I think the truck was just tired and wanted to take a nap, but soon found out he couldn't park there. When the truck and trailer ran off the road, they came VERY close to hitting a large pole. We take our Peterbilt 389-X with a Miller Industries, Century 1150R rotator towing and recovery unit to see if we can prevent any further damage to the truck, trailer, or property. All while avoiding traffic flying by on the interstate. We certainly don't want a fuel tank to rupture or worse!!! Hopefully Ethan, the Rotator, Dalton, Gavon and I are up to the task??? There is never a simple job when you are working on the side of the road on a busy highway. I can understand a little frustration and concern when that truck continued to move backwards. It is rare for you to raise your voice but I completely understand!

Most triangle kits have a basic setup diagram inside the case cover, but most drivers are not aware of or don't think of it. You also have to use your brain, and change the setup according to the situation ... if you are just over a hill or just around a curve, for example. The idea is to warn other drivers before it becomes an inconvenient surprise.

I love that you do on the job training with them and that you're always willing to help teach. Watching this video of your crew, whoever is instructing the driver needs to stay by the driver. Walking to the back to see what happening creates a lag in relaying of commands exactly one of the things that the headsets are meant to prevent. As others have said it's rare to hear you get excited but, as a truck is backing up towards your very expensive rotator it's kinda hard not to get that way. That driver almost brought a whole new meaning to ROEHL transportation. Noone that's been on the side if a highway in any situation with traffic blowing by at 60-80mph can get upset at you for using a "stronger tone" when you repeat yourself 2 or three times and what you asked for still isn't happening. The margin for error in your feild of work is not large, sometimes only inches (or less) and when those margins run out property damage is the best outcome and it can often mean injury or death. So noone should be upset that you "raise your voice" once in a while, it is well warranted.

It’s terrible the way people disregard Tow trucks , Emergency response vehicles, construction workers and stalled vehicles on the road. A few months ago the transmission in my Chevy 2500 went out on me right in a busy intersection wouldn’t move at all. So I was stopped in the middle of the road with my 4 ways on and hood up and people come flying up and almost hitting it at the last second still. When the tow truck operator was hooking it with his lights flashing an 18 wheeler came flying up and swerved over at the last second. People just don’t pay attention I’m a truck driver as well and always keep my eyes open for that. Sure some times you can’t get over but I Atleast always slow way down and watch for people by the vehicle on the side of the road.

@@projectswithdustin Seems like most drivers in this country nowadays are total dumbasses who don't ever think about safety while driving even for a second. I definitely blame the fact that it's so easy to get a license and that we have no decent public transport so you have to drive to survive in most of the country. So people think about it as more of a chore or like something as menial as doing the laundry, and never stop and think about what sort of hazards they are really subjecting themselves and other people to.

The driver set out the triangles backwards directing traffic towards their truck instead of away from it. The procedure for placing your triangles is very explicitly described in the CDL manual.

Not surprising, Roehl has massively expanded over the last few years. When I first saw them they were just van trucks like this, since then they have added flatbeds and other trailer types, and I've seen dump trucks with their name on the door along with their trainer trucks around.

years ago among other things I handled commercial truck breakdowns for a major truck rental company in the NY and tri state area including NYC. To put it mildly it was an adventure and Id see some amazing things that were literally beyond belief. Most people have no clue as to the dangers of working on breakdowns roadside. Several times drivers would actually come within inches of hitting you , whether or not it was intentional or not, who knows. Drivers not paying attention or not caring is /was a huge issue. When I worked there there was very little in the way of warning lighting other than 4way hazard lights and rotating amber lights. The police would rarely if ever pull up behind you and provide a safety barrier to keep vehicles from hitting you or your vehicle. No high vis clothing in those days either . Times sure have changed. Nice channel , nice equipment and good safety on your channel . Keep up the good work and stay safe !

I was driving a tri-axle snowplow in a raging snowstorm, middle of the night on a two-lane highway. Lost all the lights and tried to pull over - went into a shallow ditch pretty much like that semi. Ditch was full of snow so it "looked" like level ground! Driver's side rear tires were lifted off the pavement - and I'm hearing the salt/sand had shifting in the bed. Shop came out with another big snowplow, said "if we pull 'er out from the front she'll tip over for sure". Since I was just a back-up driver (only drove when the regular crew maxed out their hours), I hopped out and said "have at it" - lol. They got it out without going wheels up. Fun times.

Hello Ron, that situation looked a lot more tricky and dangerous than it appeared at first sight. I could understand your concerns, what with some of the team still learning(on the job) and traffic passing very close. Further, some of the truck tyres were in the air. On the plus side, the headsets are great and very useful, it wasn’t raining and the trailer was empty. I got interested in this stuff from watching the hit Canadian TV show HTH with Jamie Davis. Still enjoy the reruns. But what I like about this channel is that there's no edited big drama with the narration, music and commercial breaks. But it did get a little exciting at the end though. It is like going to school with teacher Ron telling his crew what to do and the audience gets to witness that to. I'm up in Maine and earlier we had a young woman doing something with her phone as she drove into the back of slowing traffic as they were entering Portland on the interstate. back when i did road assist we called a traffic car out " those with big flashing arrows on the back" to direct traffic when working on highways. i lost count of how often i felt a side mirror swipe my vest. before that only place i felt safe was underneath it placing jacks or on other side. many just dont change lane.

Just tell them the Mark 1 Optical tracking system keeps the boom out of the stacks & cab. I also employed the 3 horn beeps when backing a 26 foot box truck into a tight spot with several coworkers standing around last week.

There were several examples here of just how important it is to keep communications simple, clear and precise. Listening is, at least, as important as communicating and everyone has to understand 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 command. Every extra person added to the chain will extend the time taken for commands to get through, as we saw with the reversing trailer. The driver of the truck was the weak link here as, regardless of his ability, he had no direct communication with Ron, meaning that instructions take longer to get through - not ideal when you're reversing a 40' trailer into fast-moving, interstate traffic.
