I just ordered the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler from Newegg. It was just delivered and I installed it today on my Intel LGA 1156. They slightly modified the kit. There were black spacers to add to the front side of the Motherboard between the standoff's and nuts. I tried to follow this video exactly and the bracket wouldn't reach the standoffs. I double-checked my instructions and noticed it said to install the spacers. I did that and the install went smooth the 2nd time. Still super helpful during my install. Thanks for the video!

Star pattern is in part to ensure the thermal paste spreads as evenly as possible. If you tighten one side a bit more than another, you squeeze an excess of paste off one side and overload the other... Which can lead to things like compound squirming out the side. Star pattern spreads diagonally, more chance it'll be evenly distributed.

The 212X is the upgraded version that hasn't reached proliferation yet. Fan aside, the difference lies with the aluminum fins. They have X-shaped perforations around the heatpipes. These perforations have a two-fold purpose: the first is to help direct some of the airflow around behind the heatpipes to stop "heat pockets" from forming, the second is to allow for better a better type of airflow.

do i have to clean the cpu before i put the paste on?also is the thermal paste that came with the fan good?

No, you do not have too. I always like to use some isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip or any lint free makeup cleaning pad. For the thermal past, if you plan on keeping stock speeds then the stuff that comes with it is fine. If you want to overclock id invest in some artic Silver 5 paste.

Depends on your motherboard, Most BIOS now have the option to set your ration and leave all other settings on Autro, when you do that the BIOS adjusts the voltage you need to support that Overclock. Ideally you face the fans out the back so the air flow comes from the front of your case and out the back. But can face it up and blow the air out the top of your case (assuming you have vents and or fans in the top, or you could even face it down or in pulling air from the top or rear into the case, but you have to make sure you are exhausting the hot air somewhere. Also the cooler is bolted down and does not put stress on the CPU itself.

Yes, Ron is following best practices here, and his anti-static arm band protects the electronics from insensible discharge into the parts on the motherboard. I'm guessing that the bluish mat on his workbench is conductive and the end of the arm band is clipped to that.

Yes you can change it with any 120mm fan. Remember though you should try to replace with another 4 Pin (PWM) fan . But you do not have to. If you use a 3 Pin fan it will just be on full power (12V) the whole time. No biggie , just may be a little noisier.

76f is about 25c so a 6 degree delta (31-25) is just fine. You have no problems. Your chip is cooling fine.

Thanks! I installed this 212 cooler on my last build in 2014, but forgot how I did it. Now I'm going to rebuild it with mostly new components, but I want to reuse the old cooler. I'm still running the original Cooler Master fan and it remains dead quit after 7 years! CPU temps 37- 38C under load. We will see if it performs as well with a much more powerful and hotter processor (i5-4670 vs i7-10700).

Yes I did. I just posted the Build Log #3 for it. But I decided not to include this detour in the build log.
