Replace Dodge Dakota headlight switch 1998

Replacing the headlight switch on a 1998 Dodge Dakota.You can see in the video they are flickering on and off. Took about 10 minutes total, to replace. This part cost more money (about $25 US) but has a warranty (three years I think) It's worth it because I know the part will fail again.

thank you very much sir, I was extremely confused on how to get the actual switch part out even the autozone employee couldn't figure it out we tried pushin on everythin that looked like a button to no avail little did we know we were pressin the wrong buttons 😂. this video was very much helpful lmao.

Rons, thank you for the video. Your instructions were spot on. I changed the switch on my '97 Dakota today, it only took me about 20 minutes. Just as an fyi, I am not having the wire overheating problem. The old switch just recently started intermittently failing, most likely from age. Thanks again!

You are a braver man than I. I had a headlight switch go in my 1987 F250 Diesel -- $95 total at a dealership around 25 years ago.

Out of necessity and that hourly charge, is why I change them myself. I remember watching the first time it was done, I was charged, I think $25, plus cost of switch. Thanks for the comment Joe!

Thanks for the video. Was able to do this easily thanks to your video. I found that it was easier to get the shaft out by pushing the ring that holds it in place up.

Appreciate your video but if I were you, I would change the plug-in connector that connects to the headlight .That seems to be your problem. It is overheating, and the connectors are loose. Just a thought.

I have a 98’ and the problem I have is when it’s a very cold morning and dark, my lights won’t come on till the truck warms up. Could this be my problem?

I am having the same problem in my 1996 Dakota. I noticed that you are having the same issues with your wire housing. The light green 'H' connector is getting hot enough to melt the wire housing and thus frying the switch. Have you done any more work on your truck to eliminate this? I am stuck on this and trying to troubleshoot the hot wire to save on switch replacements.

No sir, not actively working on the over heating problem. I remember seeing somewhere that it's a known issue with switches overheating. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good Luck Jon!

My 96 Dakota doesn't like to turn on it's lights sometimes, definitely going to replace it now that I know how simple it is and they are pretty cheap

Hello rons, excellent video helped me once I made the change of switch, it lasted a month and burned again, only the connector of high lights is burned and turn on and off, which problem could be greetings from Chillan Chile.

If I remember, about $15.00 for a life time warranty . If you switch is going bad, it'll probably go bad again, so get the lifetime then when it goes bad you can get a replacement free. The cost of a switch might be more now. Good Luck Monique!

Would that switch cause the dome lights to stay on even if the switch is turned off with the knob not turned all the way to the left for the dome lights to come on normally. I replaced the plunger switches on both doors and checked the wiring looms in both doors for wiring issues found nothing. The dome lights stay on even with both doors closed.

did you press the knob all the way in to the switch? I know the knob controls the dome light, so it has something to do with it staying on, if just changed the switch and the dome wasn't on. See if you can get another switch, yours maybe defective. Good Luck, Richard
