Model 70 for the win, all day, every day and twice on Sunday. It got there first and got there best. Winchester made them for a quarter century or so before Remington even got their M700 to market. The Model 70 is called "The Rifleman's Rifle" for good reason. Let's not forget the champion as far as being the bolt-action produced for the longest continuous uninterrupted production run: The Savage Model 110, which is a legend in its own right. This title used to belong to the M70, but Savage passed them, and is still making M110 rifles even today. I am partial to the old wood-and-steel ones, which can be both tremendous bargains and stellar performers, too. Savage is renowned for the quality of their barrels, and their rifles often perform as well as models costing two or three times as much.

GunBlue490 lookin at ya. That was a lot of work, but I think both companies unfortunately dealt you bad hands! I've owned just about an equal number of fine Model 700s and Model 70s through a period of 50 years in their various iterations. My favorite calibers were 270 Winchester, 22-250, and 30-06, but there were others. Up until FN Herstal acquired Winchester, my experience with accuracy tended to favor the Remington overall, though I had a spectacularly accurate sub-MOA Model 70 '06 that I bought at K-Mart in 1974 for $124.95, which I unfortunately let go when a pretty Model 700 came along. Fortunately, it shot just as well, but I traded it for a new Sako 270. A cop's wage allowed for one fine rifle at a time! In large measure, the 700 and 70 rifles shot decently out of the box, averaging on the order of 1.5 MOA with developed handloads, but I had fits of flyers with both. Once free floated with epoxy action bedding and with triggers tuned to 2.5 to 3 pounds, both makes could routinely shoot sub-MOA on any given day, as I've discussed on my GunBlue490 channel. Enter FN. They completely turned a new chapter with factory free floating, two-point epoxy bedding, adjustable trigger to a crisp 3.5 pounds - I sure wish it could go a bit further -, and of course, they brought back controlled feeding, which is just so nice. I haven't been on an African safari, but I have had serious issues with push feed while hunting in icy wet snows. Now, when you measured your Model 70 trigger to 4.5 pounds against the 700 at a full pound less, along with the fact that a Featherweight is more sensitive to trigger movement, I said to myself "I hope he adjusts that trigger before he starts with the tests!" That extra pound will easily add another inch or more to any group with such a light rifle, notwithstanding the heavy scope. As you know, stabilizing rifle mass from one end to the other is different than scope weight that's just pivoting at the hinge point of the rifle's CG. I've demonstrated the incredible performance of the FN built Model 70s in a few of my productions. The Shot Show special edition 257 Roberts Featherweight possesses accuracy with all bullet weights that is absolutely astounding. Ditto the Featherweight 22-250. The Standard weight 270 has shot many 3/8" groups and averages 3/4" with plain vanilla Hornady 130 grain Spire Point handloads. I invite you to watch my six year old video entitled " Shooting the .257 Roberts Model 70 ~ Smashing the heavy barrel lie". Thanks for your good work, Ron.

I purchased a Model 700 in 1981. It was manufactured in 1979( I purchased it new). One day at the range, I closed the bolt and my rifle discharged. I thought that I must have had my finger on the trigger, so I fed another round. The rifle discharged again. I contacted Remington regarding this issue. Remington told me that the discharge was due to poor maintenance on my weapon. I place the 700 in the back of my gun safe for almost 20 years. After watching the results of numerous law suites against Remington. I replaced the trigger with a very good trigger. No additional discharges have occurred. @Traveler-po3oe - Your experience with the Remington M700 trigger is unfortunately not an isolated one, which is why the company got sued and lost some years ago on that very issue. Remington is arguably the oldest name in American firearms still a going concern, and they once made a great product, but about decade ago or may a bit longer, their quality did a dive and those of us in the retail FA/accessories business stopped recommending them (at least that's what I did). Their older rifles were very good, though, and if you can find a BDL or other vintage M700 they're a great value for the buck. Winchester set the standard for many decades, but when Remington came out with the M700 their management foolishly decided to risk the M70 name by cutting corners to compete on cost instead of quality. Not only did the sporting arms & hunting market react badly - but the firm lost its military contract to Remington, whose M700 replaced the M70 in the Marine Corps, et al. Winchester eventually reversed course and got over their unforced mistake, but the damage was done vis-a-vis military contracts. Today's Model 70 is a superb rifle, of custom or near-custom quality for a price much less than a custom rifle. And as ever, they are more accurate than most of the people shooting them.

And a Eddystone that I had built into a 375 H&H stopping rifle. Manufactured in November of 1917 according to the barrel proof marks. The 06 was a 1 1/2" rifle. The 375 with WW 300grain Silvertips is a consistent 1/2" shooter. I have a LH Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor that is now my go to rifle as due to spinal issues in my neck make recoil a limiting factor for caliber choice. It is an easy shooter and loves 140gr bullets.

Remington was awesome when I was growing up. Several years later I bought my own deer rifle. The model 700 was still the gun to get… I realized I didn’t need a magnum cartridge for where I was hunting so I moved down to a 308. I’ve had a few different guns in this caliber, but it’s still the caliber for me and where I hunt.

I didn’t get all my thoughts down. I purchased a Remington 7mm08 awhile back and it looked and felt good, but was horribly inaccurate. That’s when I read about Remington needing to replace their old worn out machinery. I’ve got a Tikka these days and it’s wonderful.

Videos like these, are the reason I watch Ron! I’m really hoping Remington can make a comeback. To me, it has to be just a hair better than Bergara, to be the Remington we all remember. I’m lucky or cursed enough to have shot the older 788’s and 700’s, to have a love affair with them. If my first time shooting a Remington 700 would have been the one I bought in 2003, I’d write them off and say they’re junk, but again, I have half a dozen older Remingtons, that prove they were once the standard and the one all others were judged by. Fingers crossed that they can come back to being that rifle again! As for Winchester, they’ve never been less than the pinnacle of what I consider to be an American classic. They have their share of ugly plastic rifles, but they’ve never stopped being a beautiful rifle that shoots great and is reliable. Just would like to see them take more bold moves, like they did with their long range mb.

Love the honesty in your videos. I like that you tell it like it is. Quite surprising on that Rem 700. I was hoping for better things on the new models. That is disappointing for this one gun as I think the CDL is one of the best looking rifles around. However nice to see that Remington sent you a different bolt and it seemed to perform great. I’ve always liked the aesthetics, function, feel of the Featherweight and that it fits 5 in the magazine. But the Featherweight has shown to be finicky in groups. I don’t know about the other model 70s in stainless/synthetics how they perform. Now you did have only a few selections of ammo but I’ve been hunting n shooting now for a lot of years (55) and I have found with modern guns they either shoot right out of the box or they don’t. In the last 4 years I’ve had an 06 Sako 85, 06 Sauer 100, 06 Bergara Hunter, Tikka 270 T3X, Tikka T3X 7mm Rem and a Sauer 101 in 7mm Rem. The only dud was the Bergara that wouldn’t group less than 2.5” with 12 brands of ammo but I believe that was a bad factory rifle as the gun store took it back and credited me. All the rest of those guns shot .8”-1.25” with 3-5 brands of ammo in different bullet weights. These were all brand new guns.

Ron - I have three REM 700s in my gun safe: two in .30-06 and one in .243. All three have the X-Mark Pro trigger, which was the trigger under recall 10-years ago. So all three have been through the recall. I am the one who found the issue with the X-Mark Pro and led Remington to the recall. My video on KZbin explains this. The video was also featured on 60-Minutes with Leslie Stall. At any rate, I really like my rifles and all three shoot sub MOA. I shoot Hornady Superformance through them: 95gr in .243 and 165gr in .30-06 is what they like best.

The only rifle I regret selling was a 270 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade. I believe I purchased it in 1993, shortly after they reintroduced claw control feeding. I worked at a gun shop at the time. Winchester's quality control was atrocious. Almost every gun we'd get from them came with dings in the stocks. Mine was no exception. So, after two dinged up guns came in, the Point rep (I still remember his name was Norm) went through their entire inventory and found me the nicest looking one they had. Man, she was a beauty. It shot 1.5" groups out of the box, which I wasn't happy with. After having some work done it, I got it down to consistently shooting about 3/4" groups. A few years in, because I was always tinkering with guns back then, and I didn't make enough to keep them all, I eventually sold it and have regretted it ever since.

I have a couple of Remington 700's which shoot superbly, but having worked in a gunshop a while back I was shocked by the condition of some of the new Remington stock we had. Rifles like the one you reviewed that wouldn't close the bolt properly and one 22-250 that had a bulge in the muzzle which would never shoot properly. This was a few years back and maybe their quality control is better now, but if I ever get another rifle it will be Sako or Winchester.

I have a Winchester model 70 Deluxe Sporter, 24 inch barrel, push feed. My ex father in law bought it for me and said now I’m going to show you how to reload. I know what these rifles like. 130 grain Sierra Game Kings behind 56 grains of DuPont 4350. Groups that I covered with a quarter. Some tighter but nothing that couldn’t be covered with a quarter. I hunted for years with that rifle and made some dandy shots on black tail deer. Later on I moved after not hunting for a couple years and bought a couple boxes of so called premium ammo. Couldn’t get the group i wanted and had some fliers that I thought could be me. I tried several different brands and no luck. Went and bought a rock chucker and started reloading again. Tight groups and no fliers. I picked up some Nosler Partitions and couldn’t get the same accuracy. Playing with different bullets and loads the only bullet that shot as good as the Sierra was the Barnes Tipped TSX.

My first centerfire rifle was a 700 BDL Custom deluxe in 25/06. Barrel was copper fouled terribly, but I worked on it and got it cleaned up and shooting great. After many 700's over the years, I never kept any of them. They all shot good, but the newer they were, the worse the quality was. I now have two model 722's in 222 rem mag and 257 Roberts. Both shoot superbly. The only two model 70's I ever bought, a 30/06 and a 243, both push feed post 64 actions, 80's models, both shoot great and I have never thought about about selling them. The 243 is a light varmint version, with a 26" light varmint barrel. I will own a pre-64 someday, just never got around to it and the old ones are too pricey. Would like a 300 win mag or maybe a 270. I love Tikka and now a Sako A7 Coyote that I just picked up in 25/06. Gorgeous, shooter with all the right stuff. Rigid stock, fluted medium contour 24" barrel, butter smooth action, awesome trigger. I'll be hunting Whitetails with my two quarter bores in November in Western MD.

The round receiver of the Remington is precisely why it has less of a tendency to be accurate. Every single highly accurized Remington I've ever seen has had to have square or a squaring element welded to the receiver in order to keep it from twisting under recoil because of the twists and whip of the barrel. The square receiver of the model 70 will make it have a tendency to be more accurate. The Ruger Model 77 had the same advantages. My very first rifle was a Model 77 and 7 mm Remington Magnum in 1979 early 1980. After I got out of the service that was my first Centerfire rifle purchase, I was given a load and I bought some virgin Winchester brass and I got the Sierra 140 grain Spire points. I loaded it up I had a Redfield Widefield 39x scope and my first trip to the range I cited the rifle in and then fired a 20 round group into a hole that the largest part of the hole was .33 in. That made it a center to Center spread of .046. That was a 20 shot group that I can cover with a dime. I believe that in 1979 and 80 that Ruger was sending a McMillan Barrel in their 26 inch barrel on that Model 77. That was also when the Model 77 had an adjustable trigger and I had it down to I think it was a little under 3 lb. I did prefer Less Than 3 lb trigger. Even on combat rifles I prefer light triggers.

I have two Model 70’s and both will only control feed with just one cartridge in the magazine. If two or more are in the magazine, the bolt fails to attach itself to the rim on the top cartridge as it slides forward. After a very close look, the rear of the cartridge on top drops down as it slides over the nose of the cartridge below it, which keeps the bolt from attaching itself to the cartridge rim.

I had a Model 700 BDL in 30/06 as my first big game rifle back in the late 70’s. It was accurate, but the stock beat the heck out of my shoulder. I shot a friend’s Model 70, and it fit me much better - and weighed less. I sold the BDL. I’ve been using Model 70’s ever since. The extra bonus for me is the dependability of the CRF, and the excellent 3 position safety. I bought my nephew a Tikka ultra light in 6.5 Creedmore for his first rifle. It is very nice, but it is no Model 70. And for a heavy caliber rifle, I would trust nothing less than a Model 70 or something with a Mauser action claw extractor.

For Christmas 1963 my wonderful wife bought me a Remington 700 BDL in .270 Winchester. Ever since, i have heard horror stories about push feed rifles: but have never had a moments problem with this rifle. It has a 22 inch barrel . Shooting Barnes 130 grain bullets at 3000+FPS, (my handload) it consistently gives .75 inch groups. This is my elk load and has resulted 6 Bull Elk with single shot kills. That is with H4831 Powder and Remington large rifle primers. This load is just under the Maximum recommended by Hodgen Powder reloading manual. My preferred load for Mule deer load uses Barnes 110 Grain bullets, Magnum primers and H414 powder, loaded to 3500+FPS This with maximum loads results in .50 inch groups all day long.. These shrink to .25-.30 inch if I put in an extra1/2 grain in the case! I know it makes no sense, but that's what happens If I use Factory loads, I have tried Winchester Silver tips and Remington Bronze point 130 G bullets give .80 inch loads but I recently purchased a box of Barnes Vortex in 130 grain loads and, i'm embarrassed to admit that they shot .40 inch groups! I guess i already know what I'm using for the next Elk hunt. BTW, Back when I was reading Jack O'conner, he recommended lower power scopes, so I fitted a Leupold 2-7 Vari-x scope. If you read his books DO NOT even think of using his favorite load of 62 grains of H4831 powder behind a 130 grain silver tip as it will result in flattened primers, stiff bolt lift and empty cases you clear out with a 1/4 inch dowel!!!!!!! I showed it to my dads friend, Porter Ackley and he said " such a dummy, you cut a corner and just assumed that would be all right! He handed me a Speer reloadinng manual and said "I'm going to keep your rifle until you can come in after reading this cover to cover!" . Pay close attention to the phrase "Start low and work up to the load that shoots best in your rifle"! When I returned, he actually had a written test for me to pass! I missed one question and had to return a week later to take it again....
