In 1982 I was 19 years old and I bought a .300 win. Like myDad’s, my rifles have always been a hunting first investment. I brought it home and my Dad looked at it and told me I had really painted myself into a corner. I’ll never forget, he said, “Boy you messed up. Now you have no need for any other gun.” He was so right. I’ve had that rifle for 40+ years and while I have bought other rifles, it has been the only one I ever needed…..antelope, mule deer, whitetailtail deer, big horn sheep, a bear, several elk, and maybe in 2022 a bison have all been handled with ease. I was 19 in 1982 and the recoil took a little getting used too but I haven’t had any issue with it for years. 180 grain Nosler Partition is one load for everything. Probably right at 3000 fps or so. Never chronoed it. I keep my shots fairly close. Rarely do I try anything close to 400 yards. Its an old inanimated piece of wood and steel but I have a fondness for it like an old friend. It embodies a whole lifetime of trips and friends and Dad and uncles and times that are sadly fading into memory. I’m just sixty now but that rifle has been by my side for virtually my entire adult life. It rests in the back of my closet at home until I take it out every now and then and I just admire how reliable and comfortable it has been. I hope every hunter has ONE RIFLE that holds that much meaning. It is a symbol of a life lived on my terms. Priceless. Good luck to everybody.

Great story about your Father's comments. And the sentiment that rifles and other inanimate objects hold for us. Like Dutch ovens, motorcycles, wood stoves and Revolvers. 1971 Winchester model 70 30-06 my grandfather bought for my great grandfather to hunt with him. Then passed down to me. Old leaupold vari x 2 with flip over scope mounts to use the irons in brush. It’s like my 3rd arm. I have other rifles. But that one. Is something special. That will be my deer rifle until the day I hand it down to my son. It has meaning memories and for a post 64 model quality not many other rifles stand up to. It is just a damn good comfortable rifle.

I've been hunting with a .300 win mag for 35 years. A remington model 700. It is freakishly accurate with the right load (1/2 moa). My son on the other hand uses a 7mm rem mag, I do remember dropping him on his head as a baby, that might explain it. Lol...oh my rifles name is old Bertha.

I own & have used the the 300 Win Msg, 7mm Rem Mag, 270 Win, 30-06 etc for decades. I also represented Roy W as a patent attorney. All these weapons have done me well & stocked my meat lockers for a long time. They’re all beautiful devices.

We used our 300 WM for years, never needed anything else. Now, with age and three shoulder surgeries, we stick to our 270. Don't miss that recoil and with in reason our 270 still does the job. Great videos. Thank you

I run both a 300wm and a 7mm rem mag, both Ruger m77s (I love the m77 rifles). And I’ve found despite the recoil difference I always find my self going for the 300wm. I have no major complaints on 7 rem mag, but the 300 has really boosted my confidence when stretching out for long shots on game. I know the 7rem mag is also a longer range capable round but the opportunity just hasn’t presented its self. I’ll stand by the 300wm if I had to choose one or the other as it’s proven it’s self to me time and time again. (And say what you will, but if I’m not running a magnum cartridge, I’m shooting .308😎, and I regret nothing)

I also have two Ruger M77s in .270 win and .300 win Mag. Though the .270 is lighter and both can do the same most of the times, I am currently leaning towards my .300 and carrying the extra pound.

After buying (and using) a 7mm Rem Mag, a 338 Win Mag, a 25-06, and a lightweight 30-06, I bought a 300 Win Mag with the intent of always having it sighted in for a load that could be used on anything I was going to hunt. With a tough 180 grain bullet it is fine for elk and perfect for muley bucks, and is surprisingly good for antelope - it dumps them, and the tough bullets don’t open up enough to ruin a lot of meat like people might imagine it would.

Why did you buy a 300 when you already had a 25 /06 , 7mm mag and 3006. Not begrudging you buying another gun , hell I ,m a gun nut too but for antelope and deer the 25/06. Is about perfect as well as the 7 mag and 3006.

@@twolak1972 The .25-06 and 7mm Mag are both walnut stocked, polished blued steel rifles. The 300 is synthetic stock, and stainless steel. In my particular case, that adds to the all-around utility of this particular 300 compared to the other two.

My buddy in Alaska told me to try 180s. He uses them and said the same as you. It wont tear up the deer sized game, but drops them and it would do all I need it to do on any black bear I'll see.

Ron, One has to conclude that Roy Weatherby who came out with His Magnums at such an early date, 1940s I believe you stated, was way ahead of His time. His series of calibers can still hold their own for someone who can handle them. They were more expensive Rifles as was the Ammunition but He has left His Mark among the hunters of the World.

I've had a 340 Wby for 30 yrs now. Handloading brings ammo cost way down. Its a mean caliber for sure but it quickly dispatches the critter you pointed it at. 225 barnes my favorite and they are fast

Love the 300WM. My dad taught me to shoot, graduating up to the 300. Hunting in the mountains of Virginia, I've seen that round do things to deer you wouldn't believe. As a gangly 16yo I was able to manage the recoil without flinch. It's all about what you train for. Thank you for this video, and all the great work you do. I really appreciate all the hard work and research you put into your videos.

Hearing the 300 win mag vs 7mag argument reminds me of 06 vs 270 lol. Any of these are great. I no longer shoot magnums because of joint pain from Lymes disease. My 30 06 does me just fine but I do miss shooting long distances with a 7mag. That was my baby too Ron

If you still have your 7mm go to a gunsmith and get a muzzle break put on it, it can do wonders for felt recoil. Makes it a bit longer but if it makes it usable again then I'd say it's probably worth it.

Or go, when allowed for you where you are, with a Supressor. A good Supressor is equal when it comes to recoil reduction to a Break with the Benefit of noise reduction, a 7mm rem mag with a good Supressor is something like a 243 Recoilwise

@@raleighthomas3079 the flinch is real when I got my 7mm I couldn't shoot it at 100 yards but with practice I'm shooting 800 yards and hitting milk jugs after I added a few pounds of lead shot to the butt and forend

Jake, arthritis has done the same to me. I load some 165 grain cast bullets when I want to shoot my 06. I don't hunt anything big anymore. Coyote and prairie dog mostly. So I shoot a 223. If all I could have for life was an 06 or a 270 or a 308, or a8x57, or many other cartridges I wouldn't worry. It's more about developing the skill to make what you have do what you need.

Hey Ron, Great video of a great cartridge my friend! I started shooting the .300 Win. Mag. in 1975. I also read Jack O'Connor's excellent article regarding rifles and pressures and hand loading back in the day, which remains valid today. Today, I shoot a Ruger Hunter in .300 Winchester Magnum. I'm hand loading Nosler Long Range Accubonds, 168 grain bullets. My chronograph tells me that my average velocity is 3,350 fps providing 4,200 fpe in that particular rifle. Other than short case life, which is always a by product of high performance loads and a small price that I'm willing to pay, cartridges feed and extract as normally expected. I get right around .5 moa at 100 yards on a given day with that load.

I love my 300...pleasant to shoot, economical to reload for, all the range I need for deer, and its 22" barrel is easy to handle in the woods. Yes, the 300 Savage may be the ultimate whitetail round. 😁

Another great narrative from Mr. Spomer. I have a 7mm mag and I love it. It has accomplished everything I've needed with out any issues. I've taken game up to 500 yards with it and it was the same scenario as it was at short yardage, either I missed it or I was dragging a deer back to the truck, no in between. However, the standard argument that a 30.06 will do everything a .300 win mag will is true but it depends on shot placement, doesn't take into consideration all hunting conditions. In a real hunting condition, i.e. laying on a rock in an awkward position shooting 350 yards at an elk, I want to have all of the advantages of a magnum caliber. The 30.06 is an awesome round (have one), just as is the .308, both are proven, but the .300 win mag has a proven history of doing the heavy lifting in the 30 cal family.

I love my 300 WM, it’s an all around great hunting caliber, loaded light at 150gr for deer and up to 220gr for big game. As to your Savage 116, what a great rifle. I have a 116 in 30-06 that is fluted with factory on/off brake. I also have a 16 in 260 REM. Both are super accurate all weather rifles.

My favorite all around cartridges are the 300 Win Mag, and the 7MM Rem Mag. To me you can’t go wrong with either one, and imo, they are the best for anything I’m ever going to hunt. I also love my 30-06, and my 270 as well, but I must say, my favorites are the magnums. Great video Ron. I love your channel, been a subscriber since the beginning.

I love all the fast 30's, and I've had the big 3 (300 WSM, Win Mag, Wby Mag) at various times through the years. I never feel better armed in the field with anything other than a fast 30. I've come back and settled on the 300 Wby Mag. I call it my buck hammer. Does it have a little more recoil? Yeah, of course. Does the flatter trajectory, and higher velocity / energy give me a lot more confidence in the field? Absolutely. To me that's a good trade. Would I be willing to take that a step further and go with the 30/378 or the ultra mag? Absolutely not. I think, for me the venerable old 300 Wby Mag is the sweetest sweet spot. Honorable mention goes out to the 30 Nosler. It's the fast 30 I would have designed if someone gave me a blank sheet of paper and a bunch of money. When and if it becomes more common, it's probably what I'll have.

My favorite 30 magnum is the 300 H&H. For the recoil and muzzle blast you get out of the 300 Wby, personally I just stepped up to the 338 WinMag.

Absolutelly Right. I'm on the market to replace my old 1917 Enfield in 30-06. Not because I dislike it, because, rebarrel/ rebore costs about the same as a new $750 Rifle, 300 win mag in most long action rifles and 300 Wby in Vanguard, A serius issue is bullet lengh in 180 Grns for the magnum. 30-06 sweet spot is 165 Grns and Mag is 180 Grns , Mag action allows for longer bullets, specially if you have to use the longer all copper ones

My ‘go-to’ confidence rifle is a Weatherby Mark 5 Deluxe in .300 Weatherby Mag. Stock fits me like a glove, epoxy bedded and free floated, trigger at 3.5 lbs., EGW rail, Tally QR rings, Leupold VX-R 3-9x 40mm, 30 mm tube, FireDot reticle. LESS than 1 MOA with ANY factory Weatherby ammo ever fed it. Same with Federal Premium ammo, like Trophy Bonded Bearclaws. More comfortable to shoot than a couple 30-06’s I have. The same exact outcome is very possible with a number of good rifles, that happen to shoot the .300 Win. Mag.! I just had the opportunity at the Wby. happen first, a life bucket-list rifle since I was a kid. 😉👍❤️

I JUST GOT BACK FROM CRAIG COLORADO AND SHOT A 6X5 AT 290YDS AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE DOWN HILL. 1ST SHOT GRAZED THE TOP OF THE BACK CUT HAIR. AIMED LOWER STILL HIGH BUT UNDER SPINE WENT TEN YDS DOWN. I AM A FLAT LANDER. I SHOT A 2ND BIGGER 6X5 ELK IN UTAH WITH A SAVAGE BEAR HUNTER 300 WIN MAG AGAIN HIT THE ELK 3 FOR 3 AT 320 YADS DOWN HILL AGAIN. I LOVE THE 300 WM.,180 NOSLER PARTIONS BOTH TIMES AND TWO DIFFERNT SAVAGE BEAR HUNTER RIFLES.

Great video! Love me the 300 WM. I have a Savage Weather Warrior that shoots 180 Accubonds at 3050 fps into 1/2” groups at 100 yards. But, like Ron, my favorite is the 7MM Rem Mag since my first rifle was in this cartridge.

There are advantages to using magnum cartridges; more velocity and more energy. The disadvantages of using them sometimes outweigh the advantages. If 1,000 yard target shooters all start using a new improved cartridge you will see a rise in winning scores. That doesn’t prove it is better; it only proves shooters think it is. The 7mm Remington is just as accurate putting holes in paper as a 300 is. However it only takes one shooter to set a new record score to see the others change to that cartridge. It is pretty obvious if everyone is shooting 300s they will win more matches. That seems to be a reason for the new 6.5 bore trend. These cartridges use less powder and lead to do the same job putting holes in paper as the larger bore ones do. They cost less to use and recoil less as well. That however; doesn’t make them a better hunting cartridge. The old forgotten 300 Holland & Holland is still more efficient than other 300 magnums if you compare powder use for velocity gained. The Winchester 338 is another good example too. If you think your cartridge is good for 400-yards shots; you better practice shooting at 400-yards a lot; and hope you can get closer when the time comes. Field conditions are far different than shooting ranges with benches and range wind flags. ✴🦉✴

Yep, you're correct. But this is the internet where everyone shoots at 600 yards without ever practicing at that distance before and they never miss! So facts and reality do not factor into most people's decisions. Truth is most folks have never shot at a target 400 or more yards away. Take them out to a golf course where there's a 400 plus yard straight and downhill hole and they still can't see the flag and they suddenly realize that the 210 yard shot they made last year wasn't anywhere close to the 300 to 400 yards they claimed it was. I'm all for people using what they want but I don't even bother listening to guys who claim the .300 Win mag won't shoot straight at 400 yards or that if you just add a 220 grain bullet to the .30-06 it's now the equivalent of a .458 Win mag. Myths and wives tales or should I say grandpa tales, and outdated information abound and most guys never do the research to know better. So be it. Just nod your head and move along because facts don't matter to them, logic is a conspiracy and real world results that contradict everything they believe are damn lies!

Well if you only punch paper, one of the first 1000 Yds Wembley champion was the 300 H&H, as time goes by a long time ago the 6mm Bench rest was the fav match cartridge, Today you have the most recent 300PRC. Old 300 Win Mag outstanding hunting cartidge, I punch paper to be on target when hunting, I have a 12 pack on the line that I can outshoot my Active Military Son In law that went to Snipper School last year wit my 1917 Enfield in 30-06. Shure I will loose But isn?t it fun?

That 300 H&H is an elegant, efficient, smooth feeding .30cal magnum. It easily one of my favourite 30cals despite not owning one anymore. I've got a Win Mag now because I like pushing limits and reloading, and the WM is better for chasing precision with over the H&H, if I was to ever own another magnum hunting rifle, the H&H would be the competition for the other possible cartridges.

3winmag is my absolute favorite cartridge ever with 243 hot on its heels. Fantastic round, bit much where I hunt but I gotta say it does all I need. Mr Spommer thank you for doin this video.

This is the first video of yours that I have watched. I like your presentation and plain talk delivery. I've subscribed and will be watching many more of your videos. To topic: I switched to .300 Win Mag. in 1975 and use a Win Mod. 70. I absolutely love it. Most of my hunting is now in WY. The group of guys that I hunted with (Me being one of seven) all use Rem. 7mm Mags. The oldest of our group and (in my opinion) the best shot, changed back to 30-06 in the mid '80's. I'd never known him to miss what he aimed at and most all his game was a one sot kill. I very happy both with the rifle and the round. I usually use 180 gr BTSP on the deer, 220gr Silver Tips on elk. Seldom need a followup shot as one does the trick. Usual distance is between 250 to 400 yds. I reload and have reloaded 7mm Mags. for my friends. The ballistics are close enough between the two rounds. I'm in my late 60's now and most of my hunting companions have moved on to Heavenly hunting grounds where i hope to reunite with them some day. I now suffer disabilities from injuries from on the job so the 300 Win Mag reaches out for me. I've made 900 + yd shots in the past and taken some nice mule deer at that distance, however, with age, my eyesight isn't what it used to be but the rifle and round can still do it even if I can't. I was brought up on "one shot, one kill" and never shoot to wound. It's always been: "If you don't think you can take it with one shot: Don't shoot!". It works for me and I'll stick to it until I die or can no longer physically hunt. Hopefully, those conditions will come at the same time.

I have a .300 Magnum, BUT, it's a .300 H & H Magnum. I really love that round and the gun it's in. I don't have a love for the .300 Winchester Magnum, tried, but I can't. The old .300 H & H Magnum is just one of those calibers, refuses to die and does what it needs to.

I have shot the 300 Winchester magnum and the 300 ultra magnum but last summer I had a chance to get a 300H&H in a pre 64 Winchester 70 and the first time I shot it I like it better than the other 300 mag cartridges It seems super accurate and it doesn’t jar your teeth to do it

I am a recent subscriber (10 months) and live in Ohio, the land of only strait-wall cartridges for deer. I don't reload and I am very inexperienced in long distance shooting altogether. In spite of it, I am addicted to your channel and the amazing explanations and history of each cartridge. As a person of detail, your passion inspires me. I could go on. Being new to this and limited to strait-wall cartridges, if you haven't already, could you point me to an optimal strait-wall cartridge for harvesting deer in Ohio. I live in the south so there is no restriction on what we use. But I have friends that own the 300 black out in bolt action and ar 15. They love them and that’s what they use to deer hunt with in the ar15. They are so versatile and they do the job out to 250 yards. You can go with the bolt action with a longer barrel for precision shooting or the ar15 which do a fabulous job also. That’s the main reason I choose the 300 black out because of the versatility

In Ohio, I'd use any rifle or carbine that's legal with a "4" in it... .44 Mag, .444 Marlin, or .45-70. I appreciate the .350, but, I think there is better terminal performance in the ones I mentioned. Add the .375 Winchester to the discussion if you can find one. .405 Winchester has a "4" in it too... My experience with the .357 in a carbine leaves it wanting on deer. They just don't react much to getting shot one or two times. Personally, if going to Belmont or Guernsey County to hunt, I'd take my 1895 in .45-70 because I trust it 1,000%. If I knew I was on a small parcel with short shots, my .44 1894.

I started looking at .450 bushmaster because I am seeing the ammo available. For my younger shooters I think an AR platform with a little less recoil and an adjustable stock will fit the need.

I bought a 300wm 4 yrs ago I took an Oryx woth ot in 2018. One shot downand dead. 220 Gr rn, it shoots 1 moa all day Long. Stiff recoil, I only weigh 123 lbs, but its still manageable , Best caliber Ive ever had.

Great Cartridge! Have an opportunity to get a .308 Norma Mag, and always thought that was a fine cartridge. Not quite the Win Mag, but quite the step above the '06. Excellent video, and I am glad to own a 7mm Rem Mag built on a Husky branded FN Mauser action. Had it custom built for my Dad when he retired, and he used it in Wyoming on several hunts. He just passed, and it's now in my hands along with several classic rifles he owned. Sorry to waffle on, but going through quite an emotional time.

Well that is a sweet little Savage you have there, Ron. I loved the part where you hit the bulls-eye dead center, right after saying you were wiggling all over the place. In archery, that is called "floating the pin" Haha! But I have found that if I am hunting and take a shot while standing, I do not miss. As to where, after taking the time to get on some shooting sticks, I sometimes would. That super-light synthetic looks like it has quite the kick, too. Jumped right out of your hand! Seriously, thanks for not editing that out brother. It helps to demonstrate the power of the cartridge. No joke, the very first time I ever shot my 300 Win Mag... it gave me a little smooch on the forehead. I was sighting it in right at sundown, with the setting sun directly in my face. So, I had my head tilted down to try to block the sun with my hat, and BAM. Luckily it was just barely enough to break the skin. It was the first time I had ever been scope-punched. And I felt like because it was from my brand new 300 Win Mag, that it was definitely, well worth it! I use 180 gr Hornady SST @ 3130 fps at the muzzle and sectional density of .271. There is nothing that I will ever see that this will not be enough to bring down. Where I hunt, there are free-roaming exotics and you never know what you might see. Usually would only expect to take White-tail, Axis, feral hog. I've have taken one Aoudad as well. But I have seen some Red Stag and there are even Elk roaming in the area. So being prepared is the only way to go. But the 300 Win Mag couldn't do any better than the 7mm Remington could. I used to say if I had to choose just one cartridge, it would be the 30-06. Because of the availability of ammo. But these days, (prior to the ammo shortage) I would say that the 300 Win Mag would probably be just as prevalent.

Well, I certainly know as I am increasing in my years, that I have also been increasing my ability to forget simple things that have happened within them. So whenever I remember something that I did not know that I actually had forgotten, it is "mostly", a wonderful event to take place. Feeling the contentment, remembering exactly how something happened. Then a feeling of resentment, (not wonderful) for the fact that I ever allowed myself to forget it in the first place. So, I just now (for some odd reason) remembered a part of the story that I told in the previous post about myself getting "scope-punched" by my 300 Win Mag. I had told about trying to block the sun from eyes with the brim of my hat, but that was not all that happened. It was the first time I ever shot it, and I did not know the trigger pull was so light. I was indeed trying to block the sun with my hat, but I was actually just trying to get into position when I "accidently touched the trigger" while I was leaning forward. I'm lucky it did not open me up big-time. I have seen those turn out pretty bad. When I remembered this detail, I wanted to immediately correct my deficit. Because I love telling on myself and laughing at myself, as well. Ain't no shame in my game. Oddly, no one else has posted anything else after I did, for an entire week now. Because of this, it was effortless to find my post. To add this quite relevant and pertinent detail to my historical event. I hunted deer and elk in the Mesa country around Dubeque, and Parachute Colorado from 1969 to 1991 every year with a Remington 700 BDL 300 win mag. Every day after we came to camp, the outfitter would collect 10 dollars from everyone in the camp that had a rifle. Then he would pick out a place where there was a white rock way off and way UP for us to shoot at. Well to try for the money, all of us would really crank in all we had to hit the damn rock, and nearly all would get the scope bite. That went on for years until the cook,(outfitters wife) spilled the beans. Shooting uphill really brings the scope close to the forehead, and the ol outfitter and hie sons always had a lot of fun. It didn't stop us tho, because we loved it when we hit the rock and collected the $ !!

I got into my .300WM (Rem. 700 BDL built in 84' for $400) because the price was right.. but like you, I've found it to be very versatile (from 400 lb black bears to white tails, moose and elk) and can hand load across the entire spectrum of available .30 cal. bullets! My favorite bear/elk load is the barns 180 gr. ttsx over 70 gr.s RL22 in norma brass and a win. LRM primer.. very accurate and still packs a punch @ 500 yds.. I think it is arguably just as a popular as the (another fine cartridge) venerable 30-06! Can't go wrong with the old school!👍🇺🇸

Excellent video👍 I love the 7 Rem mag as well (very much so), but it simply won't equal the 300 mag's. I own one and both the 300 Win and 300 H&H ( I owned a beautiful custom 300 Wby several years back as well) and I can tell you the 300 H&H will equal the 300 Win in equal barrel lengths with decent handloads. It is my favorite of the three. Nothing feeds as smoothly either. To me, all energy numbers are, are a way to compare cartridges based on a formula that heavily favors velocity, so I hate to use energy figures, but it's really all we have (that most folks are aware of anyway). I've killed animals with all three rounds and have owned multiple rifles for each round as well, so have a decent spectrum to compare each of them based off of. I would never knock anyone for choosing any one of the three with the exception of the brown bear. There, I'd much [refer the 300's and would prefer my 340 Wby over all of them.

Been using it since 81. No problems whatsoever! Accurate, Flat shooting, Never seen anything else hit harder! It’s a combination of bullet weight and velocity with that 180 grn. bullet. I have tried lots of different calibres. It is right at the limit before it starts to waste the powder like the Weatherby. It is essential that you shoot this round plenty so you can get used to it. With magnums, the bigger is better as long as you handle the recoil! Realistically, most hunters can’t handle anything more than 30-06 recoil in a 9 pound rifle so 7 Rem Mag is a better choice for most. That being said, if you’re willing to put the time and effort to master them, both 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag are really worth it for large game.

I would also add that lighter 300 win mags that kick “are too light” in the barrel weight. These ultralight mountain rifles all kick hard because of their weight. I do own one 😉 and it does kick. You need to get used to it. None the less, the cartridge is effective and proven on game and target shooting. Jim Shockey had a great article a few years back on proper rifle weight. I think it was around @ least 7.5-8pounds to start for those that shy away from a mule kicker rifle. He’s right in my research; u less anyone has any more info 😃👍🏻 I have a Winchester model 70 and its around 9 lbs scoped. It’s a much gentler shooter and lightly recoils in 300 win mag. My point is rifle weight is everything. Even when sales men and women are trying to get you as light of gear as possible these days. Lighter for jacket, backpack, and/or camping gear; not your tool/rifle that completes the task. Just my opinion from research and wisdom. Great video as usual Ron! 😃👍🏻 also, I would load 220 grain bullets in my rifle but don’t got below 180. 180 grain is that sweet spot for 300 win mag; kinda like 130grain is for 270 Winchester 😃. Thanks tnywragge. Col. T. Whelen had a lot to say about ideal rifle weight nearly 100 years ago. He was/is probably right but... a 6-pound ultralight might not be ideal for complete control and sustained fire, it remains a special purpose rifle that helps one reach that one sheep or goat or caribou and drop 1 to 3 shots on it quite precisely, usually off a pack. No, not the ideal all round rifle and application weight, but I've had decades of great success with ultralights.

I have loads for 168, 175,180 and 220 grain bullets all shooting under 1 MOA and the 220 Sierra match king under 1/2 MOA. I've got a muzzle brake on my Sako 300 Win Mag. It works and I can shoot it all day. Not getting used to the recoil but sidestepping the recoil instead. That does have the potential make me unpopular with other shooters on the firing line but that potential has yet to be a reality.

I had a 300 Win Mag, hand loads with 200 Nosler Partition bullets, driving the bullets a few grains over max loads of powder. It killed elk with one shot kills out to 500 plus yards, it was hell of a rifle. It was not gun / load you wanted to sit down and shoot 40 rounds from the bench, it hurt. I did find the rifle was surprisingly accurate. I no longer go elk hunting so it had to go.

I'm sorry to hear you no longer go elk hunting. My long trek elk hunting days are about over also. There were many memorable years though. 2018 was my very best and most memorable elk hunt. I hunted alone at 68 years old, spotted the elk, snuck as close as possible without exposing myself and made a one shot kill at 266 yards with a handloaded .444 Marlin. I was then able to get the elk to my truck by dragging it and getting it in the truck whole. At times I wondered if someone was going the find my body along with that elk because of a heart attack but I did it. There was something primal about doing it all myself and very self satisfying.

I can't say 300WM is any better or worse than other magnums in the same class. It does the job pretty good in my experience. The only gripe I have is the rifle I have chambered in it is very light weight, and shooting is knocks me around a bit, and I am over 200lb., and 6 foot tall.

@James Lundy I never said I didn't like shooting it. If there was a conspicuous lack of testicular fortitude in me I would be afraid to take that gun out of my safe. Quite the contrary. My plan is to mount a new scope (which I already bought), and replace the stock and give the old one to my brother (who needs to replace an identical one for his rifle). A friend talked me into putting a muzzle break on both and now they have the recoil of my 308 which is tolerable . I love the 300 it is my go to rifle with a good 180 grn. rnd . I am very confident when taking a shot .

Two more inches of barrel might give you 60 fps, perhaps 100 fps tops. Weight that against the slight inconvenience of the longer tube for carrying, maneuvering, in and out of trucks, saddle scabbards, gun cases, etc.

As always Ron's videos are great and without too much editing completely honest and I love watching! If the barrel is shortened by two or maybe three inches, will the bullet lose a lot of speed, on the other hand we get a shorter barrel with better maneuverability, when hunting in the woods or in a closed blind it is easier to maneuver with a shorter rifle and we shoot 95% at distances less than 200 yards, does it matter if we lose that speed and energy and then do we need a 300 Winchester magnum caliber? If we make 30-06 out of him ?! I am convinced that the barrel on the magnums should remain 26 inches for the purpose of burning gunpowder and develop additional energy for shooting at long distances, otherwise the manufacturers would not make the barrel in that length!

I know lots of people that hunt elk with a 7mm rem mag. It is however the caliber I have seen more elk hit and then run away to never be found. An example, my father used to have a 7mm mag. and he shot a big bull at about 200 yards right in the shoulder. He hit the big bone and the bull didn't even go down. The 175 grain bullet hit the bone and destroyed the bone but it stopped the bullet pieces and no vitals were hit. 5 miles later I was able to get a shot at that bull and stopped it with a 7x57 and a 140 grain bullet at about the same distance. I don't believe it is the fault of the rifle but the hunter expecting to be able to harvest the elk no matter where it is hit.

My experience differs from yours when it comes to fast kills. I have found the 300 mags drop most game animals quite a bit quicker than 06s or 308s. The Wby seems to be the ideal choice but the Win isn’t far behind. As for moose those I’ve harvested or seen taken just seem to take time to figure out they’re dead and that range of calibers includes 30-30s (yes it can kill moose cleanly at moderate ranges) to the 375 Wby. I’ll liken your choice of the 7RM to Jack O’Connor’s wisdom in his discussion of the 270 vs the 06. For lighter big game the 7 might be a bit better. For the heavier animals the larger bore might be ahead. Obviously you have to be able to shoot accurately with either or else all the velocity means very little so recoil does play a role however the 300s (moderate versions) don’t recoil as much as many may think. i have shot 30-06 quite a bit and the 300wm does not have too much more of a recoil impulse (to me) than 30-06... i have a bull-barrel 300wm though, so that extra weight makes a difference...

Buddy with all the posibilities it's hard to make up your mind. Grew up reading Elmer Keith with big bore hard cast bullets and a the same time Jack O'Connor with the 270 Win. Well I hunted with a 30-06 because it was what I had. Today looking to upgrade from my 1917 Enfield (and the 30-06 is Fantastik) to a bit faster 180 Grns Win mag, Availability wheigts a bit over the 300 Wby (I handload so either isn't a problem) Yet Im 70 and hoping to pass on the rifle to my 7 yrs old grandson to teach him hunting, so a 7 MM Rem mag might be a better choice handloaded down to 7-08 for teaching. Personally a 358 would be my choice from rabbits to Bear

There's a huge number of cartridges that all are so close there's really not that much practical difference but the hype around them all makes choosing one more complicated than it needs to be. What 358 would you pick? From a lot of the research I've done and a little real experience I think the 35 bore is a bit of a game changer. That said, I don't have much experience with the 35 bore. I have a bunch of books by both of the gentlemen you mentioned. I think the greatly improved bullets we have (when you can find them) make a difference.

@@haroldmilroy4489 I have a 1917 Enfield in 30-06 with a verry pitted barrel, ,35 Whelen easy choice, yet reboring or rebareling or upgrading to a 300 Win Mag style cartridge almost as expensive as a new $ 750 rifle, My fav. for the very close range hunting enviroment ( spook something 40 yrds out to way out yonder 150 yds) is a Browning BLR in 358 Win. The Savage 110 Storm is the one I have in mind in 300 Win Mag, Can easily swap a 338 Win Mag/ 358 Norma mag barrel or down to 7MM Rem for my Grandson. For close range Pigs/Deere a 180 grns pistol bullet or 35 Rem type bullet is fine, Elk/Moose/Bear a 250 Grns Partition in at least a 35 Whelen, You might have to take a not broadside shot and that one will do the job. 338 Win Mag might be the the best big/medium bore choice, If your ammo doesn't arrive you can probably find a box out there

@@WillyK51 Interesting that you mention the 358 Norma as it seems to have faded alot. Great caliber and I personally would get that before a 338 WM. From my limited experience with the caliber I would side with the first AK Master Guide, Mr Hal Waugh who said a big bang but results may not match the bang. I'm sure others have had better results as its quite popular so there has to be a reason. I have 3 - 300s. Two Rugers and a Remington. I am very fond of the 358 Win and think the Whelan is a superb cartridge along the lines of one I'm trying to get built - a 9.3 X 62. Theoretically at least a tad better than the Whelan but I doubt there's much difference at least for use in North America. The heavier bullets for the Mauser might matter a bit on really large game.

I just had a proof research carbon fiber wrapped barrel put on my Remington 700. I also had the end of the barrel threaded so I can use my suppressor on it. It's a lite 300WM hunting rifle with almost no recoil. It's now my favorite hunting rifle.

I like my 300WM because when I was buying my first rifle I said I wanted something I could take moose hunting in the far future, and they guy upsold me on it from the .270 win or the 7mm Rem Mag. He showed me the cartridges for both and obviously more bigger means more better. Left-handed Browning X-bolt medallion.

Nothing against the 300 Win Mag but I still feel the Weatherby version of the 300 is a better round. I am also a 7mm Rem Mag fan. But are any of them actually “bad”? 👍👍

I love my model 70 300 win. It makes a wonderful mule deer and elk cartridge. If you are recoil sensitive get a heavy gun and shoot the common 180 grain bullets such as a power point or core lokt and the recoil is not bad at all. But you will definitely feel the hotter loads

Mr. Wragge, I'll have to red flag you on this one simply because it's contrary to Newtonian physics. Recoil is a product of ejecta weight and velocity. The heavier the bullet you push at any cartridge' highest speed, the more recoil it will generate in a given weight rifle. You may perceive it as less, but it is not. Sorry.

@@RonSpomerOutdoors Thanks for the reply Ron. By using the words "settles the rifle recoil down", I mean the snappy recoil feels more like a push than a "snappy jab". However, Hornady states that a 180 grain GMX (Reloader-22 (73.7gr.) vs 150 grain GMX (Reloader-22 (74.3gr.) has equal velocities (book noted @ 3000-FPS). In fact, the Hornady Reloading manual 10 doesn't allow loads for 150gr. bullets above 3300FPS where 180gr. only goes upto 3100FPS. The pressure is too high for the powder grains handled in the case and bolt. The book references 225 grain Hornady bullets upto only 2800FPS. Does this mean a 225 grain bullet produces less "kick" than a 150 grain bullet with more velocity according to the reloading manual? I'd argue yes. Your completely right in your answer, "heavier the bullet you push at any cartridge' highest speed, the more recoil it will generate in a given weight rifle"; however, we can't do this according to reloading manuals and SAAMI specs. So, theoretically kick would be less in this case based on bullet grain size and powder loads. Newton's law is correct but that is an extreme which we aren't allowed to get to in these loads. This is an awesome conversation for shooters because anytime "rifle kick" is argued people shy away from the 300 win mag. My point is shooting heavier bullets will "kick" less based on grain weights referenced to powder loads relating to their velocities. If this were the case then we could use 80+ grains of RL-22 to get a 225 grain bullet to true max velocities around 3100FPS. That might "kick" harder but unfortunately the pressure(s) are too high (above 64,000 psi). The load cannot occur. Unless, someone out there is meeting this load development? That would be a super heavy barrel to withstand the pressure. Rifle weight is a huge factor on rifle kick. I'd definitely argue the heavier a barrel the less recoil felt. Bench rest shooters show this with 22-pound rifles to adsorb the recoil or "kick". Newton also states that "elastic collisions" that are equal transfer energy equally between each other (like a car hitting a parked car - transferring the energy of motion into the parked car to stop the first moving vehicle). I'd argue that this is an unequal transfer of energy because barrel harmonics don't allow for an equal transfer of energy distribution. The rifle absorbs energy and distributes it along the stock and into the shooter. A heavier barrel and stock would improve this off balance. It would be like putting the rifle against a brick wall and firing. The rifle isn't hardly going anywhere; but an off-hand shooter can be kicked backwards. This hits home + some added information. I ran used 06 woodmaster that was basically a single shot. Stepfather ran 7mm mag 24 inch that barked. Unmistakable when fired. When it was time for me to replace. We went to the books. At the time off the shelf ammo was not so diverse. So even with his 7mm mag. He told me me too go 300 based on ballistics. Absolutely correct on kick. It's not a target shooting gun. I have no issues with it. But have friends with black eyes or reverse C scars in the middle of their foreheads. Barrel length plays a big difference. As I said, 7mm mag Winchester 24 let's out a bark like no other. Both great guns. But it if your hunting with multiple people. It's always great to know the sound. That way you know who shot and where. Great Video

Finally, thank you ;-) I have always been a fan of the 300 WM I have shot many different calibers in my 45 years of hunting, and IMHO none really compare. I have owned the 7mm, and I know it is your favorite, but my skin crawls every time I think about that caliber lol. I have taken moose with my 416 Rem mag and my 375 Ruger, but mostly the 300 wm all did the job, but none as versatile as the 30 caliber . I am not a gun collector and I do not like having something sitting around that I do not use, so I have a limited arsenal but they are used. My 300 win is my go to rifle, I have taken many moose over 400 yards and a few just over 500 yards using a mono bullet since they came out and always successful kills. The only bullet I load now for every game is the 165 GMX at 3260 FPS and it does the job exceptionally well. Thanks for your videos, they are always great, we just have to cure you of that 7mm fetish you have lmao

I don't think anyone is undergunned with a 7 MM Rem Mag. I'm between a hard place and a rock choosing between both, Me, 300 Win to replace my old 30-06, but I will pass on that new rifle to my 7 Yrs old Grandson if I live long enough to teach him hunting, For a youngster the 7 mm might be better. I can always down handload to 7-08 recoil to teach him

Thank you for negative input against unethical shooting of game animals. Long distance shooting requires limited skill sets. Hunting requires multiple skill sets. I call distance shooting of game animals unethical, lazy methods of legal take.

Ron, you hit a homer this time. Thank you. My 300WM is just about built and I'm already planning for the 7RM because of you (don't tell my wife). I also thought to use the 150 gr. in the 300WM for lighter game. I especially like how you provided the MPBRs for a 6 inch target. Basically at 300 yards just put the cross hairs a couple of inches high and you don't need to fool around with the turrets. This is what most hunters do anyway. Lastly, the recoil figures are for an 8 pound rifle. A lot of rifles with scopes for longer ranges are weighing closer to 9 (or slightly more) pounds. The felt recoil will be less (okay not much less but enough to prevent crutches later in life LOL).

I hunted the western mountains for Elk with a group of hunters who all used the 7mm Rem Mag. Except our shortest hunter who carried a Ruger #1 in 300 Win Mag. I handloaded a 200 gr Premium bullet for his Ruger. The recoil was Punishing, but it shot very tight groups. I saw my friend shoot a cow elk at just over 100 yards. The bullet struck the shoulder and absolutely slammed that cow down on the spot. There could be many reasons for such dynamic performance, I suspect bullet placement. The only other rifle I've observed that would duplicate that results was the 375 H&H. I've only hunted with that rifle a couple of times and took a large Texas Boar. It's more power than I need but It does inspire Confidence!!! Great Video!

First Norma, and then Winchester, were looking for a 300 H&H alternative in a standard long action. For what, to save a minuscule production cost on a magnum action? Winchester won the marketing hype, and a new cartridge came to be, which did not improve on the old design. All it accomplished was to fit in a smaller action. If you actually want to load 250 grain projectiles, the 300 H&H is actually faster. I load a 215 grain Berger Hybrid, at 2813 ft./s, with 69.5 grains of H4831SC (BTW, not the max load). No difference from the load Ron quoted using the 212 grain ELD-X. Where’s the improvement? There is non. I’d be willing to bet the 300 Win also requires more powder. The only advantage is for the manufacturer, not the consumer. Winchester got it right 40 years later with the 300 WSM, IMHO.

Right on Frank. For any real hunter getting within 300 yards of game I can see no advantage of the magnums over the old standards, .270 and 30-06. Just burning more powder and carrying around heavier rifles for no real reason.

Been shooting since I was five and never understood how some shooters developed a flinch. Wimps! Bought a 300wm a few years ago and now understand how some shooters develop a flinch. 😁 Took some serious effort to get rid of mine, but now the 300 is my go to for most everything unless I’m deep in the woods, then the old 30/30 puts the meat on the table.

I have taken a 7mm Rmag and 338 Wmag to Africa and both worked as planned. Its the bullet that does the work. A friend swore by his 300 Wmag with 250 grain bullets as "lion medicine" but I never tried my guns on the cats.

I am one of the many fans of the .300 Win Mag as well. I love the power, and it’s reasonably affordable. Recoil is heavy, but not aggressive. I hunt with the new Norma Bondstrike, that’s a beast of a load. 180 grains at 3100 fps, they hit like a sledgehammer.

Ron, I'm sure you can shoot better than 99 percent of the good ole boys at any deer camp. The reason I say this is about 15 years ago I pulled up at camp here in eastern North Carolina. It was muzzle loader going into rifle season so the bench seat at our range was kept warm. I was setting up and I took note of the pile large silver casings under the bench. After I shot my one zero conformation out my 6.5x55, I asked my buddy who the idiot was with the 300. Before he could answer I saw a big guy I didn't know with the jacked up truck and hunting stickers all over the back window. I said that's the guy. He said how did you know? I said he looks like the kind of person that shoots a 300 magnum because he is a "magnum" guy. A guy that has to have everything big, or nothing at all and can't zero his rifle because it's obvious he is flinching but won't admit it. Our range is only 50 yards... There's pretenders in this world, much more than the real thing in every facet of life. There's the real deal elk hunter out west that really can shoot a elk with a 300 and needs it. Then you have the magnum boys...and a good many of those have turned into the Creedmoor boys now. The newest trend followers.
