For years I have been making my own stains with Fiebings Leather Dye and alcohol. The advantage of doing it this way is that it reduces the chance of the wood warping because you are using alcohol vs. water. If you look at comercial hobby stains like Hunterline, this is what they use, they just mix and match Leather Dye colors. The other method I have used is to use Pan Pastels diluted in alcohol. They have a lot of colors. But everyone has their own way of doing it, whatever works for you.

I use rubbing alcohol and KIWI liquid shoe polish ( brown and black or just one color , depending on the task). I get excellent results. The alcohol makes the stain dry fast. The darker you want it the more polish you add. I start with about 50/50 blend in an tall skinny olive bottle. I just dump my boards in , let them get saturated , then remove them with long handle tweezer sand let the wood dry on a paper towel. If I want it darker, I just dunk them again.

I am building a coal town with wood kits and scratch built buildings so this video is a big help for me, thanks. I have been using acrylic inks to Air Brush fade coats as a base to weather my locos and rolling stock and the results have been really good. I did have to thin the ink, use ISO to make it more transparent.

Looks Great!! Does the water increase the chance of warpage? What is the advantage of using water versus alcohol/

I am proud that you got several shingles to look like they were both missing and ready to fall off. Really looks real plus the back porch roof that was missing on the one side.

Ron this is a fantastic video and technique. I just put the first coat of India ink but on this particular kit it really didn't take much. Now I think I might experiment a little bit before I do the final build. Thanks yet again, Chris

Great video. I was considering making my own stains using leather dye and alcohol but this technique is worth a try first. Keep up the great work Ron.

I have an ITLA scale model (Cosmopolitan Motors) that I would like to try this technique on. The model is actually cut MDF. Do you think these stains will work as well on MDF? MDF has that funny surface - part glue I think.

MSF is funny. I would test it on some scraps first. You may need to seal the MDF before staining.

Ron: Excellent video as usual! Can you give a guesstimate as to how many drops for the black and raw umber? What’s a good baseline? Your reply will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I use leather dye from Hobby Lobby diluted with IPA. About one bottle of dye per 32oz of IPA gives me more stain than I may use in a lifetime.

Ron, Have you considered using alcohol instead of water?
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 3 жыл бұрын
You could but it adds expense and there is no reason to. Alcohol soaks into the wood just like water. Once it does the dry time is virtually the same. The flow aid reduces surface tension, so I don't see any advantage.

@@RonsTrainsNThings I model in On30 and the much larger, almost 12x larger, flat wall panels, even with bracing, tend to warp quite a bit with water based stains and paints. Do the inks you use also work with alcohol? BTW, enjoy your channel.

Yes, they will work with alcohol. 👍🏼👍🏼
