When I was having my table re-covered (which involved removing all the rails), I made sure with a framing square and laser that the side pocket rails were straight down the table b4 allowing them to be tightened down. I actually lost a tournament game bc my only shot was a straight down frozen rail shot past the side pocket and I couldn't do it bc I would have hit the far knuckle.

@@ObsessedWithPool I’m super fussy about this. I will inspect billiard hall tables to confirm straightness by sighting them. By closing one eye and sighting them for any mismatch is easily done and then you’ll know if there would be an issue from a specific direction for your rail shots. This is good info to know 👍🏻

@ronthepoolstudent Ron, thanks for this video. I have been having a terrible time getting this shot to work as I have no idea where I need to aim. I manage to get this to work about 1 in 8 or 1 in 10 times. All the other times I manage to have the object ball drift away from the rail enough to not go in. When it does work, I can't really reproduce where I aimed that time too well, since, as I said before, I don't know where to aim at all.. I am using a low deflection carbon fiber shaft, so my English shot line should be more or less parallel to the center ball shot line, not pivoting. Are you aiming through the ghost ball center and then pivoting a bit for the English? This shot seems to me to need much more precise placement than you are saying. Any clues would be most appreciated.
@ronthepoolstudent Жыл бұрын
Thank you D. There is actually a fair bit of leeway on this shot. The main thing is not to hit the object ball first. Ideally, missing on the way in by 1/8” will send the ball tight down the cushion from this angle. Keep shooting the shot while trying to miss hitting ball first. Once you visualize the aim point, you’ll start making it with consistency. Let me know if that helps 👍🏻
@ObsessedWithPool Жыл бұрын
@@ronthepoolstudent hi Ron and thanks very much for the reply. I set up my cell phone on a tripod to watch the hit in slow motion video (this was bothering me as to what exactly was happening!) and found out, indeed, that I was hitting the object ball first, both stroke and aiming issues. Once I fixed that (by concentrating on shooting to where i actually think i was aiming 🤔 and aiming right between the cushion and the ball as they all say to do, it went right down to the pocket, both with Tor Lowry's center high and high outside English (which seemed to make the ball hug the cushion more??). Center high caused a couple of scratches (as was said in other comments), but outside high seemed to fix the scratch issues, mostly. Once I got past the psychological barrier to missing the ball, at least for one shot or so, I was even able to succeed with your inside high trick, but that only seems to consistently work if one is always going to aim to miss even the simultaneous cushion and ball hit, and you have to be pretty precise as to how much to miss as I sold out a game on the 8ball by missing the ball completely once. I will try more with the inside English to see how far I can actually miss the ball and make the shot as that way seems much more useful.. Problem with all of this is that ball control and position after the shot seems to go out the window..
@ronthepoolstudent Жыл бұрын
@@ObsessedWithPool thanks for the update D. As for the inside spin shot, you can control position by adjusting the vertical tip location placement along with speed of stroke. (high/low) It will take trial & error to gather feedback to know the physics behind the shot. I shot inside spinner drills for months to be able to learn stun with spin and speed. It’s a quirky shot but once you get a handle on it, it’s an amazing addition to your game. I have a KZbin Short coming out tomorrow where I shot an opening nine ball game shot. The shot is low inside stun to gain sick position to my next shot. The shot can only be described in a way that I simply felt how to stroke it and that I subconsciously understood tip placement. This instinct came from countless hours of trial and error as mentioned. What you will find is that one day, you’ll begin to feel how stun and differing degrees of stun will play a huge part in your game. You’ll be able to instinctually play and it’ll feel as if you are an extension of your cue, you and your cue will become one. It sounds crazy but this is what I feel when I’m in stroke. Please ask me any questions at any time and I’ll be happy to help in any way possible. Thanks again 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Ron, what is your aim point on these shots.... i can do it but not consistent...aiming at the ball thin or at the rail itself? i'm thinking of trying backhand english to see if that helps consistency so i get a tru aim point and let the deflection take over from there. Thanks again... Vince
@ronthepoolstudent Жыл бұрын
I aim just short of hitting the ball Vince. This being said, I use a super low deflection Z3 shaft (11.8 mm) so I’m able to aim where I plan to contact the cushion. You’ll need to practice this shot from various cut angles ranging from shallow to steep. This will help to find your own aim point while accounting for any possible cue ball squirt. One more point: Experiment with speed as well as this makes a difference.
@zekragash42944 ай бұрын
Getting around to watching some older videos. How much aim compensation for squirt/deflection? I don't seem to be able to consistently get this shot. The only thing I can think of. That and old eyes.
@ronthepoolstudent4 ай бұрын
Knowing our cue’s performance is a must Ze. I suggest using the paper reinforcements to shoot the same shot over and over as you experiment and adjust. This will more rapidly help you to understand your cue’s performance. For instance, I recall not understanding the three cushion inside running spin shot. (linked below) I then set it up as mentioned above. Within one hour, I understood the shot. I realized I was hitting the shot with too much pace which caused massive squirt. Once I slowed down the strike, my cue ball hit my aim point every time. From there, I began to pocket the inside running spin shot with regularity. See link below: 3 rail inside running-spin shot kzbin.infoKUwNUMbjkpM?feature=share Lastly; think of it like this when using spin, let the spin do the work as you stroke with finesse. I call this slinging the cue ball. By doing this, you’ll dramatically reduce squirt thus holding your cue ball on line. Where players get in trouble is when they bang at the shot too hard. Give this advice a lengthy chance as you practice. As you go through the process, you’ll come across one of those eureka moments Ze 👍🏻

Very nice Ron. Ouick question for ya. When you were practicing your straight stroking drill either on the rail or on a straight line drawn on the felt, how many reps and sets did you do? l understand we have to create muscle memory and thicken our mylen sheath. Thank you very much James and thank you for the question. I never really counted when working on recreating muscle memory. I actually just kept telling myself to stay at it and eventually it will come. Hope that helped 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks again James.

Hi Ron. Just curious. Did you use what I would call 'normal' spin on the ball as a snooker player would and move the cue parallelt to the original shot line and then just adjust your aim by having built up a 'knowing' of the amount of squirt and compensating for it by sight? Or do you use either of the Front Hand English or Back Hand English methods? Which method do you normally use? If FHE, did you use BHE in your early days? What are your thoughts nowadays? Thanks for your help.
@ronthepoolstudent Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question cue ball. I do not use FH or BH english. I simply move the tip to where I know the contact point is on the cue ball and stroke to deliver the tip on target. Also, I use a Z3 11.8 low deflection shaft so I aim at where I intend to hit on the cushion. There is hardly any squirt with the Z3 shaft so aiming this way works fantastic for my stroke. This being said. cues that squirt the cue ball will need to be figured out through experimentation by the player so they can compensate accordingly. I hope that helps to answer your question CB. Thanks again 👍🏻

I struggle with these. You make it look easy. Do you have to allow for throw when aiming to hit rail then ball?
@ronthepoolstudent Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick, when using inside spin on these frozen shots, the ball will hug the cushion even though we hit close to or slightly away from the object ball as mentioned in the video. As far as adjusting for throw, I do not unless the object ball is off the cushion. Here’s a tip for you: If the object ball is slightly off the cushion, use top, middle or bottom outside spin, this will make the object ball track freely down the rail into the pocket. This also pertains to any cut shot on the table. We do have to factor in spin induced throw here but once you’ve learned how to aim with speed/spin, this becomes a powerful weapon. Thanks for your question Rick 👍🏻😊

Good video. Are you doing anything consciously to account for deflection or squirt? Or is it all unconscious?
@ronthepoolstudent Жыл бұрын
Thank you Y2C. I use a Z3 low deflection 11.8 shaft so my aim point is exactly where I want to make contact with the cushion in this case. Any cue ball squirt is counter acted by swerve. In fact, if I use low inside spin, the cue ball will swerve/hook into the shot even more, this is great when the cue ball is at a 90° angle to the object ball that’s also frozen to the cushion at distance. Thanks again and hope that helped. PS, I have eleven different cues. There is definitely a difference in squirt where some of them would require lots of practice time to get to know them.
@brett6314 Жыл бұрын
I've made the 30 to 45 degree angles pretty regularly. Last night I missed a longer shallow angle, say 20 degrees. I was confused looking at it thinking a specific contact point on the rail wasn't obvious. Why don't I ever see someone using this if the ball is close but not frozen? Those are hard to cut more than 4 diamonds.
@ronthepoolstudent Жыл бұрын
Thank you Brett for your question. On those shallow angle frozen rail shots, you’ll need to hit ball rail at the same time. My advice: Experiment by adjusting your aim point and keep your cue as level as possible to avoid swerving the cue ball on those longer shots. Hope that helps 👍🏻

So it's very predictable path. Also, there's a cool variation of this rail first shot with inside draw which makes the cue ball bounce from the first long rail, follow the tangent line, and zipping back from the second rail because it remains all that inside English. Thanks Nao Nao. I have not tried this but I will as it sounds interesting. As you know, I’m new to these more advanced shots so imparting different spins from them will be an eye opener I bet for sure. Thanks for pointing this out as I can’t wait to make the cue ball change it’s mind 👍🏻😉👍🏻
