Cripps was a deserving winner but last night’s count confirmed what a lot of us thought already; that is isn’t the prestigious award it once was. If you want the ultimate prestigious award it has to be Coaches or AFLPA award now

The fact that defenders, forwards & ruckmen have no chance of winning tells you that there is no way this is the award for the best (& fairest) player.. it used to be good, until around the mid 90s when it become only midfielders that could win it.

Based on this Brownlow description we need to maybe say that it is not a true representation of who the actual best player is.

What I dislike about the Brownlow is what Joey said. The umpires vote on it. THE UMPIRES! And aren't we happy with the job they did this year? So stop holding it up as the measure of the best player and just call it the umpires award. Maybe the Coaches Award should be regarded as the actual best and given more attention.

I've been saying this for years. Every year the umpires prove that they shouldn't be trusted with this award, and every year we say the same shit after the same type of controversies...until the GF rolls around and then we forget about it like goldfish. We're all bloody mental for watching and talking about the Brownlow Medal! I wouldn't ask most umpires to make a decision on which tshirt I should wear, let alone our game's highest award.

@@njokic2176 I wouldn't trust ANYONE to have to adjudicate a game and then, without the aid of stats or playback, judge the three best players. Not an umpire, not a journo, not a player.

Love the chat, but I have to pull you up on the Ken Hinkley comment… It actually is quite relevant… Who’d you rather be .. The Dog who won the flag from 8th & runners up in 21 or PA who finish the home and away season inside the finals/ top 4 regularly over the past 10yrs and Have won nothing… Its hard to win but it’s relevant

He wasnt as consistent as other years and also had Treloar getting All Australian honours for a huge year Was always going to take 3 vote games off him

There’s no issue with the umpires voting, and yes it’s unique.. however it shouldn’t be as prestigious and “penultimate” as the media say

Once you're seen as a "star" in the eyes of the public and the media, the umpires will be biased towards you. They may not intend for it to be that way, but that's how it is. In many games, the best of field is not a superstar - but they're the ones that sneak into a vote here and a vote there whilst the stars sit front of mind in those who judge.

The "MisVoting" on the Brownlow falls squarely at the Umpires just getting it plain wrong.. I have no problem at all with the way the voting is done for the Brownlow, as it has been like that from day 1. We now have other awards voted via the coaches & players & media. So the Brownlow MUST remain with the umpires, just exactly how it has been. Otherwise, the other 90 winners pretty much get their award thrown in their face. Which they don't deserve. The Umpires NEED to have the tools available to them when it comes time for them to vote. A defender might have the best defensive game ever played, but he will be lucky to get 1 vote. Also should be that a player in a losing side should never get the 3 votes. If they were best on ground, then they get the 2 votes.

Exactly, its the umpires award which is voted by the umpires. More games are played than previous years, the mystery of who was best on field without going off simple stats, star mids are rarely tagged and are able to vote extremely well these days. The sad part is those complaining forget that the rules have not changed, so if the medal is rigged today, then it was always rigged with every winner in the past.

Isn’t it funny that umpires vote on the Brownlow and pick out the free kicks so essentially they run the AFL and seeing we had an umpire rooting the system then my Statement is The AFL stands for A Fixed League lol here’s a point umpire bounce the ball then they let the players go at it strongest team wins

The votes are blowing out with players because umpires only see 5 players on a team. Also joey saying early 2000s it was hard to get votes, winners were only getting 20 odd votes because everyone was getting tagged... I would have worded it a lil better,, everyone wasn't getting tagged, it was playing AFL and they use to be called 1 on 1s or even playing on your man... I remember in my under 18s days we got told as defenders, play on ya man don't let him kick any goals, simple.. Now it's all styles of play, where you should be trying to play, control the ball, floating back, intercepting packs etc..Afl players playing these days just reminds me of putting cheats on the sony. ⬆️➡️⬇️⬆️⬇️⬇️R2,L1,X,X,O,O

That's why No Saints Player is ever good enough to win the Brownlow Medal. They aren't even in the top ten. The Saints are Worst performing club for decades.
