We run 13 trailers with 6 crews here in Wisconsin. Pulling power is done with diesel Chevrolet’s . We have a shingle recycle center that takes “clean loads/shingles only” so most jobs require two trailers. After 20 years, we feel like we have a nice system in place for this process. I am interested in creating a separate “Trailer Business” and the logistics behind doing it the way it’s shown in this video......

I am in the UP, got a 3 man crew. we always get that dump trailer as tight to the building as possible and hardly do any ground clean-up. If I cant get it up tight to the building the price goes way up.

Just found you this week. So far you are right on the money. I have a dump trailer. I have not used or rent it for 8 days. I have a remodel company. It’s 8x16x4 paid 13,500 when top of the line. Guys don’t buy one rent it, unless your company is making good income.

I just added a 16' gooseneck dump. I also have a 14' hitch pull. The landfill rates are much higher in Michigan. You might want to prepare yourself for rising prices where you are. I am the business owner but I haul them to the landfill myself. When we are on residential projects figure twice per week. The dump trailer combined with the equipter gives us full control on disposal. And like you said that is #1. I generally pull 200-300 for each load on top of dump fees. I tow with a 2020 GMC AT4 3500 diesel The duramax rules.

Dmitry, what are your thoughts on dump trucks vs. trailers? Can you possibly do a separate video on this? I had a junk removal business years ago, I pulled a dump trailer around for 2 years. I would say a few pros and cons for me would be: Trailers: pros -can be pulled by most trucks that are much lighter than the truck required to haul the same amount of weight - Cheaper up front and maintenance cost Cons: Less people can handle trailers in terms of maneuverability Backing up, forward, taking turns into account -can't bring a trailer as many places -hook up trailer Trucks: pros Maneuverability, ease of backing, and turning Easy to hop in and go Cons: another rotating assembly to maintain, more maintenance Higher insurance and up-front purchase costs These are things I noticed between driving my own trailer around and then driving dump trucks for a roof8ng business I used to work for. Now I've started a roofing business for myself, and I'm thinking of my next steps and what I want to run. What do you think?

I have had three dodges and seven fords. I never had an issue with any fords in my life until my big red one. I have had it for three years and it has been in the shop seven times. Not including recalls. I will not have it anymore after 9 AM in the morning. Traded it for a Dodge Grand Caravan!! Trying to save on gas, insurance and monthly premium until my company gets going well.

I tow both of my 12x6 14k trailers with dodges. One 1999 1500 360 2wd one 2004 2500 hemi 2wd no problems. And I've had cummins and powerstrokes in the past. Only gas now and no problems.

I work for a general contractor and we have a dump trailer the main reason is so if the supplier can’t deliver and also when there is those big annoying 12’ siding pallets it’s so much easier to bring back to supplier than trying to load it sticking out the back of 8’ truck bed especially when going to multiple job sites in a day
@genewilson753 жыл бұрын
I switched to dump Trailers about 2 years ago. I won’t go back to dumpsters agin. However there’s that job here and there where a dumpster is more practical. But I agree with everything you said 100%. I love the control I love the sales pitch and our project managers are the ones who usually take the dump trailers when they’re going to the job sites anyway. It’s a win-win all around.
@primeexteriorsnw27235 жыл бұрын
Our numbers are very different in our market. I’m in Portland Oregon. Most subs charge $250 for the trailer rental during the job and it costs roughly $400 to dump a 25sq roof. I’m a small new business but I have one dump trailer and am about to buy a 2nd. I can control the process like you said and for every 32 roofs I do it pays for a new trailer by not spending $250 to rent for the job. Money well spent in my opinion!

Dump trailers are so versatile. Unlike a bin you can move it out of the driveway overnight. Pick up material also. I use a 12’ trail tech. When you have your own trailer you have total control. I have a one ton truck with 12’ box and hoist I like to use if I have to back on lawns with lawn plywoods of course.

Did you just start a roofing company and hire a bunch of roofers to do the work ? Or hire roofing contractors to do the work? I haven't seen you discuss a particular roofing technique. If you do have roofing techniques to bring to the table , I'd like to see you get on the roof and show what you got.

I mainly bought one because it suck going to the dump yard every single job you do and every job you almost are left with a lot of debris especially if you have dry rot and there’s only so much you can load on the truck, now I only go to the dump about once or twice a month

There are companies here that rent the small 12-15 yard roll off dumpsters on trailers. Did you ever look at these? I have found a set that includes one trailer and 3 roll offs for $24,000. The companies renting them out here are renting for $500- $600 per load. Why so much? Because people are actually paying more for the convenience. They have rubber rollers as opposed to metal, so they don’t scratch driveways. They are shorter than typical roll offs so they are easier to get in tight spaces like back yards, etc.... I’m considering buying some, but my problem is hiring someone who I can trust to roll them off and pull them safely. My idea was to use them for my jobs and rent the excess for home improvement projects people are doing. Great video!
@RoofingInsights3.05 жыл бұрын
Hiring someone full time makes things complicated: immediately you have overhead and not always volume to justify it. I am little skeptical on charging more, once it gets competitive I don’t think you will be a bale to get $500-600. Can you do 10 trailers per week with that price tag? You will have to market it as well. Plus you have DOT and all rules applies (once you start advertising and doing it for hire rules are getting tougher). You will have to have insurance as well. Completely different business doing it for hire VS just your own jobs.
@roofingtips5 жыл бұрын
Roofing Insights yeah, there are companies here that do it full time. People are actually paying more for the convenience and piece of mind over renting the 30yard dumpsters that are heavy and have big metal wheels. I feel like it may just be a “bubble.” I swear there are at least 6 companies that just rent small roll off dumpsters in Memphis..... and memphis isn’t that big of a city 🤷🏼♂️

We use a dump trailer because there are a lot of jobs that you can't get roll off close enough to the roof to throw trash directly into the roll off. And we don't want to pay labor to pick up trash twice. Also in our market renting a roll off cost about 300 dollars rental fee plus the dump bill.

Been using a 1976 1.5 ton dump truck for the past 7 years. Easily hauls and dumps 3.5 ton loads. But the hydraulics leak quite a bit, and has other problems too. Considering getting a dump trailer, but right now only have a 2000 toyota tundra to pull with, so prob gonna have to buy a small dump trailer and make multiple trips on jobs. Not sure if this is a good move or not.

Be careful with GVWR if you get a 3500 anything. Even if your trailer is empty if the trailer is rated for 14,000lbs and your truck (3500) is rated for 14,500 then that puts your total at 28,500. Anything over 26,000 requires a CDL license. This is why 2500 models are so popular for contractors. The GVRW is 9,500 for most.
