Ok first Tekken 8 character guide, and yes, more to come! Let me know what you think about the format! Keeping the "starter guide" idea from MK1, giving you the core info you need to know without going into every single move making the video 2 hours long, core strats, bnb combos, and do you like the "top 10 moves" format idea? Its how we used to sorta break down 3d games back in the vf4/tekken 5 days, like here's the core moves to get started with so you don't have to worry about the 100+ other ones. Anyways feedback appreciated so let me know what ya think

I would love to see guides for more characters, but maybe for really long ones like this stick to the characters you really enjoy and can reasonably make a giant guide for. I think making like a 10-15 minute vid for a characters 10 or 15 moves for most or all of the characters would be AMAZING. And hopefully not too much of a work load

I only have a few things I would add that didn't get covered but I find useful: -Muscle Armor (d/b+1+2) is one of the best power crushes in the game. It's optional whether you do the 2 attack out of it so you can just do the first part without risking them blocking and punishing. And they couldn't punish if they wanted to because the 2 coming out of it hits mid and is -9 on block and shifts into an unbreakable 38 damage throw on normal hit. Depending on what you armor through, you can opt to not do the canned follow-up and instead come out of it with a launcher or throw, which can be guaranteed depending on the recovery of the attack you just armored. This was funny to omit because during the Toll Kick explanation @rooflemonger mentions that there are very, very few safe power crushes in the game - that's true and King happens to have one of them. -King has another amazing frame advantage move with f,f,n+1+2. This is a 9f mid that's 0 on block, +7 on hit, and +18 on CH. It doesn't do damage on its own, but it is so fast that it beats most things. On hit with +7 it's your turn to do pretty much any follow-up you want. On a CH with that +18 advantage, f+2,1 is guaranteed and heat engages into a full juggle combo. It mixes up with his f,f,n+2 low as well if they start blocking that. -He has a chain grab off sidestep, SS+2+4. This on its own is not generally useful because it's the same as his d/f+2+4 chain throw and always is the 2 break version. What IS useful is that if you hold back you cancel the throw and just get this massive sidestep that ALSO is crouching the entire time. It's bonkers good for repositioning in a stage on a character that doesn't seem like he has a ton of fast movement. Probably the best lateral reposition move in the game. Since it's crouching it also avoids high homing attacks and more critically throws. -He has a chain grab out of Jaguar Step, 1+4 or 2+3. It comes out at 12f (which is a great mix-up with the 11f mid option) and has a 1 or 2 break guessing game (both grabs look identical) that leads into his actual highest damage chain throw, even better even than RDC. It ends in Screwdriver which is Armor King's old finisher throw (it's basically a SPD) and if you get the whole thing off it does 116 damage. The entire chain is a series of 1 or 2 breaks, along with a 1+2 break option in the middle (that finishes it early with a whopping 93 damage). Unlike RDC, it's a true guessing game - there's no memorization which you can always avoid the option by knowing to break 2 in the end. Plus the first follow-up throw after the initial grab is unbreakable, so you're always going to get at least 32 damage off of it. In my opinion it's the best High option out of Jaguar Step by far since it's 12 frames, homing (all throws hit sidestep), and effectively safe - they either take a load of damage or break it, and if they break it you're at -3 and they honestly are going to be disoriented because the animation is wonky and it rapidly switches sides - if you recognize the break is happening and throw immediately afterwards it very often can catch them unaware. One advantage is that as the King player you will recognize the animation and know they broke the throw faster than the opponent, and have more time to prepare an immediate response.
@BobtheX8 ай бұрын
Thanks for explaining the side step cancel, I was trying to figure out how to do that
@rooflemonger8 ай бұрын
Other good notes yep! I forced myself to pick 10 moves specifically to keep the guide "brief" so I went with basically if you can only pick 10, those are the 10 i'd pick. The game being the game though, obviously there is indeed so much more
@BobtheX8 ай бұрын
Could you actually explain the timing for the ss2+4 cancel? I'm still having a hard time getting it on purpose. When do I hold back? Before or after 2+4?
@Reldan8 ай бұрын
@@BobtheX It's after. You can tap or even hold back right after you input the 2+4 and you shouldn't have the throw come out at the end. The 2+4 you can do at almost any point within the sidestep and get that extra movement. If you do it immediately after letting go of the u or d you will not even see the sidestep, or you can delay and do it right as the sidestep ends, which gives you a massive amount of lateral movement. One nasty trick is that you can actually buffer GS into the sidestep cancel. Do the SS+2+4, and you can buffer the f input, and then do the hcf+1. The b from the hcf should cancel the normal throw and GS will come out instead. Unlike a lot of cancels that often have a bit of recovery time before the move comes out, this has practically none. If anything the GS at 10f comes out faster than if you hadn't cancelled at all and just let the 2+4 chain throw happen. You can do the same thing to buffer muscle buster - if you time the qcb+1+2, the b input from the qcb will do the cancel and muscle buster will come out instead. This now gives you a full 1, 2, 1+2 mixup out of the sidestep - not bad! I guarantee this will catch some people unaware - anybody who "knows" the matchup knows it's the 2 chain throw that comes out of sidestep, except it doesn't have to be. Good luck with the practicing - you'll get the timings down if you keep at it!
@Reldan8 ай бұрын
@@rooflemonger Absolutely! I love your videos and loved seeing my main man featured in the very first guide! I always figure the comments are a good place to add some of the nitty gritty extra stuff that aren't going to make the cut into a video that already is over 40 minutes long and packed with solid info. If I had a request I think a guide on the wall system would be incredible. The interactions between when you get a splat you can follow-up and when they simply gain invuln until they hit the ground is very unclear. Some chains land a full combo against the wall while others just drop in the middle for no apparent reason. And if you get off-axis side splats it feels like a crapshoot on what you can convert those into. And that's just the normal walls - the exploding walls and breakable walls do their own things as well.

Good video, thanks Roofle! HOWEVER, if you are truly a beginner in Tekken 8, I would basically ignore all combos shown as they're far too complex. For the U/F 4 Launcher, simply do 4 -> B3 -> FFF 2+4 (the run grab). It does 60+ damage and is extremely easy to input. For the D/F+2 punish -> it's just B3 -> FFF 2+4, does 65 damage or something. So you lose a minimum amount of damage but have no execution at all to worry about which is important, especially when you're still getting used to the game itself. The damage scaling is so big that long combos are barely worth it, especially when you can't even control your character yet. Just my 2 cents as a complete Tekken noob who has exp in other FGs. My feedback would be to include easier beginner combos as well for the next character guides. Hope this doesn't come off as too harsh because I still enjoyed the video a lot. Have a good one.

@@condorgaming4000 Honestly, I can do a lot of cheap, guaranteed damage with Lilly and the same applies to almost every character. My problem with King is that it takes forever for these throw animations. It's so boring. If you mash the right buttons even randomly, their whole game plan falls apart. Any King player sweats profusely if you break even a single throw. See how fast they start trying to abuse armor and that's when you steamroll them.

A thing you missed from the chain grab part. You can buffer inputs: if you press 1 and hold it and then press 3 the input will be 1, 1+3. For the arm breaker chain: 2, 1, 1+3. It can be done like this: 2, 1 (keep holding 1), 3. Its also like a rolling motion, press 2 and roll 1>3 and it will come out 100% of times. I always do it this way and find it easier, other chains have different motions but you have to try them out. If you played Gief in SF, do the Giant Swing using a reverse 360 motion if you struggle with forward into half-circle. You can play with the buffer window a lot more in t8 than SF, find the motion that suits you better for some grabs.

Solid guide but a few notes on combos: 1. FC+DF+2 BNB has an easier route with no instawhilestandings: FC+DF+2, UF+3+4~B, f,f,f+2+4. Does 69 damage on non-counter hit and requires no timing or extra skills to pull off. 2. DF+2,1 has an easier BNB route that will have a few point less in damage and is easier: DF+2,1, DF+4,3, B+2,1, UF+3+4. The last one will set you up for oki or you can hold back to cancel out of it immediately. While the damage is lower, the forced followup will make up for it in strides! 3. I feel like there should be a better BNB from UF+4, but so far I can only find the "trick" ones, which is cool when you want to show off, but isnt really feasable for beginners.

I’m new to fighting games and I followed your guide + phidx‘s basic tutorials and I hit red ranks in 3 days lmao, king carries so easy through low levels, people just don’t know what to do.

really need a beginners guide for dragunov, even though 90% of the community is already abusing his running 2

So many "beginner" guides are just someone rattling off moves with zero context of when or how you should actually ever use them. Thank you for actually making a thorough, useful guide that actually understands that guides can be significantly more than regurgitating the move list.

nice combos, rooflemonger! i would suggest also using f,f,n,1+2, it guarantees a f2,1 in counter hit. really good and safe in neutral also use f2,1 for long range punish! f+4 and f,f1 if they are sidesteping you (although grabs track in tekken 8) alley kick d3+4 to finish up rounds, long range but very unsafe and lastly, d2+3, good for waking up the opponent after certain throws (when they are waking up next to you). mid that hits grounded

Something worth bringing up is how King's just frame moves work. Tackle 3+4:1+2 and f+3:1+2 both have very late, strict timings, but the timing for b+3:1+2 is very strange. Rather than trying to time it to the hit, if you basically do it as a slide input (b+3~1+2), it works pretty much every time.

Love King and trying to master counter combos. My problem is knowing when to counter. Characters like Lars or other fast attackers, I have absolutely no idea. Would love Kings fight break down on a real fight and explain what to counter with. Really hope someone make another King video! Thanks!
