Agreed, always carry some chock blocks, even on dry surfaces sliding can be difficult especially on older model trailers where the rails are corroded with rust and debris. Sometimes if you are sliding the tandems forward you can back in a parking spot that has a curb behind it and use the curb as a way to block the tires from moving provided the trailer won’t back into a light pole or other fixed structure. Be safe out there.

I always start my tandems all the way at the front (as close as you can get them to still be able to release the airswitch if you have one without that aero piece being in the way) sometimes people who load it know what they are doing and when you weigh it’s perfect. Also I start at the front that way the only way you have to go is BACKWARDS and your not moving your tandems forward and back to get it to level out. Just a tip incase you didn’t know.

Another trick to tell how far back you've slid is drop a glove by your step, where the silver part and black part meet. Keep and eye on how far you slide it, once you get used to how big the hopes are you'll be able to measure how far back or froward you've gone every time.
@ronahue19464 жыл бұрын
My two cents... but about the 5th wheel when travelling on icy roads. Just a little steel on steel between the 5th wheel and the trailer can cause big problems when you try to turn a little... even to change lanes as it may bind just long enough to cause you to over steer and when the medal to medal does release it is sudden and correcting that motion can lead to a hairy situation...even dirty thick COLD grease can bind when it is really cold. What I used to do is pour a can of STP on the 5th wheel then ease under the trailer without scraping it off... you will really feel the difference. Also About ICE... if you suddenly discover you are on ice and need to get control fast put your right wheels in the breakdown lane... hopefully there is a bit of crusty snow there to gain control but even if there is not any sand that has been applied to the highway recently has been blown there and the tires will break through to it. I always stayed out of the right lane when trying to get beyond an icy stretch as the right lane is far too slow... the left lane is moving faster but the tricky part is how much distance to leave between you in the vehicle ahead... if you leave too much space them darn 4 wheelers in the right lane think they have time to move into your lane not thinking about the fact that they are in a RUT and must navigate over two mounds of snow and ice and often are fighting for control ... right in front of you... there again if you absolutely must there may be some crusty snow and sand to manoeuvre to on the left but you also are probably in a rut so going there is last resort. Looking back on it later I regretted travelling on ice which I was good at because I lost my trust of travelling on snow... something I once enjoyed... anyone remember the blizzard of '78? RainX on the mirrors if they are not heated.

Dave.. you see that spot to your right where a truck WAS parked and is mostly dry?? That's where you back into to get traction. (Typed this before end of video.. maybe you got smart) And if you HAVE TO... pull thru the fuel island and use the covered part that has no ice for traction. Just get in and out as fast as you can. Also.. take a rock, or your knife, and make an X where your original pin hole was... or where your target hole is. That way you're not guessing.

Sliding Trailer Tandems during winter, especially when the road or truck stop is icy. When your sliding the Tandems on a icy surface its true that the trailer will slide because there is no friction. Yes ! It's gonna be difficult try to slide your tandem on the trailer. You want to go to an area where there is pavement (clear) of ice where you slide the Tandems. Make sure that you don't have a Class 3 trailer , they can be difficult to slide. You want to be on solid ground. where there is no ice,
