"Sailing" is one of those transcendent songs. There's something about it that puts it in a category all its own. It's the kind of song that, if it comes on the radio when you're almost home, you'll drive around the block just to listen to it. It deserved every award it got.

I went through the typical Generation X Life Cycle with Christopher Cross: 1: Liked it when it came on the radio as a youngster. 2: Made fun of it when it came on the radio as a know-it-all teenager. 3: Got wistful the first time it came on the radio in my late forties, realizing how long ago it was when "Sailing" and "Ride Like The Wind" came out. I'm sure many of you reading this had similar experiences...

Yep. ETA: It's not that we disdained CC, his songs, or soft/yacht rock; more that we were young, times change, new music, movies, pop culture (or what we call "content" now) gets our attention. If it's good, though, it withstands the test of time. We'll always think of it fondly, and we come back to it.😉

I was 11 when it was released. The radio played the shit out of it when it came out which drove me insane as I was usually in my room building models and playing Atari then. Now, oh to go back one day and relive that time would make me sane.

He always reminded me of a white Bill Withers in his singing style. And you might think his songs are overplayed, but the guy is just so likeable that you can't help but like his music. And for the record, 'Ride Like The Wind' was a favorite of mine when I was little. I always liked it much more than 'Sailing'.

I listen to Chris's music to this day! A lot of people aren't aware of what a phenomenal guitar player he is. And what a silky smooth voice he has. I was a freshman in High School when this came out (1980), and didn't know much about sailing. When he sang about the "canvas", I thought "painting" (not a sail), and the song inspired me to draw a beautiful beach scene (in pastel chalks) with golden sand, swaying beach grass, a pair of frolicking dolphins, and of course a sailboat. I still have it, and it's definitely amateurish, but back then I could listen to the song and stare at that picture and just escape to my favorite place in my mind. It's a beautiful, amazing song!

Fascinating episode! Imagine stepping in for Ritchie Blackmore for a sold-out Deep Purple concert, as an aspiring musician. He must have felt like he was President for a day. Or like an amateur athlete covering for a star quarterback to lead his favorite pro football team, WITHOUT the threat of bodily harm. I wonder if, at the time, he thought this must be the pinnacle of his career.

I think those who weren’t alive at the time can fully appreciate just how groundbreaking this album was. The production value and techniques were way ahead of its time and nothing sounded like it on the radio, causing people to notice him in every sense of the word. Thankfully, The Grammys recognized him as he deserved it and although he never repeated the same level of success since, he forever made his mark in the music industry that lives on today.

I told them he’s one of the quintessential voices of the 80’s (along with Peter Cetera, Phil Collins, George Michael and Huey Lewis). I vividly remember laying under our cherry tree in Eugene, OR with the sun beaming down watching my mom plant flowers in her garden and listening to this song. Or am I wrong?…… Doesn’t matter. The fact it stirs those memories is all that matters. Thank you Christopher Cross and thank you Prof of Rock for taking me down memory lane!

Morning, Adam. You know, when I first heard Christopher's songs, I couldn't help but think of Al Stewart. That rich production quality, with so much air and plenty of space, along with seemingly infinite depth, really resonated with me. In fact, there are so many things going on in terms of arrangement and orchestration, you can listen to those songs a thousand times and still manage to find things you hadn't noticed before. With regard to Al Stewart, whenever I hear "Time Passages," for instance, the production still blows me away. That kind of approach is sadly absent today. Another wonderful analysis, sir. Cheers!

2 years ago, I was watching my then 3 year old nephew who by 11pm that night had become restless. I knew that car rides put him to sleep easily so I loaded him into my car and we took a summer night drive on the highway. I decided to put on some mellow, easy listening songs that would lull him to sleep. My go to was “Sailing”. I played it 3 times and by the 3rd time he still wasn’t asleep but I could hear him in the backseat humming the melody and doing all the key changes.😂 I always say that was the night he discovered REAL MUSIC. Ever since then, that has been our song and every time he’s in my car or at my house he requests that song and I fire up my turntable. He’s turning 6 soon. Love that kid and this song 🥹

Sorry about your dog. Age 73 and I’ve lost many pets that I still reflect on. Companions that never question, unlike people who sometimes just don’t know when to shut up. Great song and well told story. I wasn’t aware of his guitar prowess. Nora Jones is another that we seldom here from. She did a concert in Korea around 2016 with 40,000 attending. She had Angelina Jordan do the opening and at 10 years old even did an encore singing I Put A Spell On You.

Hearing you speak so glowingly, lovingly about this song is so gratifying. I've always adored it and often felt the same as you expressed near the end that one must turn everything around you off/out and just let the song envelop you and carry you away to a place of tranquility and beauty. It is a wonderful respite that you can indulge in whenever you need it most. Thanks for sharing CC's story of triumph in '81.

So glad you spotlighted Christopher Cross! I remember when "Ride Like The Wind" came out, and I really loved the driving chord progression and Michael McDonald's singular background vocals. But as a budding guitar player I especially loved the outtro solo Christopher played, even though it is not prominent enough in the mix, IMHO! I used to get ticked off when the radio DJ's would start talking over that solo, because it was smokin'! Thanks for talking about his guitar chops, they definitely need to be recognized!

So, I’m 21 years old. My mom got me into classic rock, and about a year ago I finally got into Christopher Cross’ music, and his debut record is one of my favorite of all times. Having Larry Carlton (my second favorite guitarist, besides John Petrucci of Dream Theater) and Michael McDonald (The Doobies are my fav classic rock band) just made it magical. I’m a progressive metal fan at heart, but Christopher Cross’ music is more unique than most Prog Metal bands I’ve heard. Thanks for covering this!

I have always liked Christopher Cross' music. He had some very important musicians play with him, which only made his great work even better. I mean, the song "I Really Don't Know Anymore" features both Michael McDonald and Larry Carlton, "Minstrel Gigolo" features guitar legend Eric Johnson, and "All Right" is effectively Christopher Cross with Toto as his backing band. Few other artists are afforded that luxury, and the quality of the music and production show.

Omg, my dog died very similarly, his collar got caught on a tree branch stub when he likely tried to catch a squirrel. I was at school and my mom told me in the car home from football practice. My mom wasn’t strong enough and I had to lift him up to release his collar from the hold. We buried him in woods by our house which were later developed into a subdivision. My good friend I met just a few years ago had a party and I looked at a map for directions and saw that her house is situated right where we buried him. There has to be a message there but I can’t figure it out with my mortal mind.

Adam! Being a former Radio DJ & putting 20+ years of my life into it (and a lot of other things before and since), it’s impossible for me to answer a question like the one pinned to the top of this column. I played ‘em all back in the day, loved a BUNCH of them, liked some and HATED others - at the time. But this many years later, it’s all water under the bridge. It’s all good. But also, being a woodwind, guitar and keyboard player, I’ve never looked at music as a contest. Either you’re good at it or you’re not. Simple as that. About your “Annie” story, it’s really sad. I love dogs and have had them most of my life. It rips me to shreds when I lose one. But I try to be philosophical about it - you NEVER own a dog. You GET TO TAKE CARE OF THEM as long as they’re here. A dog is the very definition of unconditional love on four legs. I try to be the guy my dog thinks I am, and though I know I never can be, it’s something to shoot for.
