Coming up, it’s one of the darkest days of one of the rock era’s most storied bands. 1987's Tango in the Night was Fleetwood Mac’s 2nd biggest record. Most people forget that. It also had more hits than any of their albums tied with Rumours with Little Lies, Everywhere, Seven Wonders, and Big Love. Already known for having more than their fair share of secrets, intrigue, and infighting, one tragic day after recording Tango in the Night took the band’s brand of musical mayhem to an entirely new level… leaving one band member, Stevie Nicks fearing for her life. And another Lindsey Buckingham outright quit the band for good. Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks were both stuggling with substance abuse and Christine McVie felt pushed out of the creative cycle. John McVie hadn’t played in so long that he was rusty, but through all this turmoil they managed to record a hit song so magical, so joyful… even happy-go-lucky, that it puts you in a good mood even time you hear it. So could that joy and the record's success overcome the drama? Stick around to find out. The story is coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Today we're covering a beautiful joyous song from a classic band’s most successful albums from a very dark period in their extensive yet dramatic history. The 1987 hit Everywhere from Fleetwood Mac’s 1987 album Tango in the Night. A song written by the late Christine McVie…
August 7, 1987, is one of the most infamous days of Fleetwood Mac’s long and storied career. Having released Tango In the Night four months prior on April 13th, the band had been fighting over how to put together a tour to support the record. Lindsey Buckingham, in particular, was exhausted from his time with the band and was eager to get back to his solo career. So after the band had started booking gigs, he announced that he was done. Concerned about how losing a key member would affect their upcoming tour, the rest of the band tried to change his mind.

I've always been a FM fan, but Lindsey, to me, is one of the true geniuses of pop music - right up there with Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney. True, both Stevie and especially Christine had the bigger-charting singles (aside from Big Love & Go Your Own Way), all of their songs benefitted greatly from Lindsey's studio prowess as a guitarist and arranger. It could be argued that a song like "Dreams" or even "Everywhere" wouldn't have been the ubiquitous ear candy that they became without his contributions. Lindsey himself has said that his chief responsibility in the band was to take everyone's raw material and craft songs from it. Not to diminish anyone else's efforts, but it goes without saying that the post-Tango albums suffered greatly from his absence. And as others have already stated, both times they've toured without Lindsey, it took two musicians to attempt to replace him; one for vocals (Finn & Burnette) and one for lead guitar (Campbell & Vito). That, to me, speaks volumes. Great episode, Professor!

Fleetwood Mac songs were my entire childhood into adulthood. I was born in 1972, and I grew up listening to them all, and I loved every one of them, and have an appreciation for Buckingham, as well as Nicks. McVie's songs and voice were always what captured me most on the Fleetwood Mac hits. There was an effervescence about her songs. When I was in the mood for dark, brooding, and mysterious, it was Stevie, but if you wanted your spirits lifted, it was Christine McVie all the way. Her songs were joyous, and her voice was crystal clear. Aside from the happiness that her music brought me, I had a more personal appreciation for her. She resembled my late aunt (my mother's only sister, and my only aunt), who I lost when she was 29 yrs old, and I was just two weeks away from turning 12 yrs old in 1984. Christine always reminded me of her, and so when she died, I felt a little bit as though my aunt had died again. Much of my life, she had been like a warm hug for my soul, and it was crushing to lose her. Sometimes it's hell getting old, and you lose the icons you grew up listening to and watching as they age up and out of this world.

Once he joined Mac, he pretty much became irreplaceable. However, there is more than this one incident where Lindsey physically assaulted Stevie, including one time on stage. The song 'My Little Demon' is his own lyrical admission that he's had some issues. People were outraged that Stevie maneuvered him out of Mac, but everyone likes to sweep under the rug (or isn't aware of) some of the treatment he's dished out to her over the years.

Great tribute to Christine. Without her, Fleetwood Mac doesn't survive the turmoil. How they made it through "Say You Will" without her is a miracle in and of itself. It's ironic its lead single is called "Peacekeeper" because that's one thing Christine most certainly was. I read Mick's memoir recently (excellent read) and one of the frequent issues brought up in it is Lindsey's controlling nature. At one point Mick recalls a clash between Lindsey and John where he's complaining about John not playing the bass lines correctly and John says something like "This band is Fleetwood Mac. I'm Mac. Your name isn't on this. You don't make the decisions."

You have to give Billy Burnette and Rick Vito mad props though: they were brought in at the very last second, so the band could do the tour, and they pulled it off. Also, the Burnette/Vito line up of the band gave birth to one of Christine McVie's most beautiful ballads, "As long as you follow". Which is a song, which for some reason is always overlooked by everybody.

I find it very sad that Christine McVie is no longer with us. Not only did we lose one of the great songwriters ever, I don't think Fleetwood Mac will ever be the same even if they made amends with Lindsey. Not without Christine. At least we have the music. The title track of Tango in the Night I feel is one of the more underappreciated songs in their catalog. It's just brilliant and you can just lose yourself in its guitar solo.

What can I say about Christine McVie & the impact that she, Fleetwood Mac, Tango in the night & the song 'Everywhere? had on me as an eighteen year old in 1987? It literally lived in my Walkman where I worked in a studio, hand painting decorative wall tiles in West Cornwall. I had a massive crush on one of the company directors, & would get butterflies in my stomach everytime he walked through the studio. The business closed at which time, the director admitted he felt the same way about me! He was only four years older, & we went on to spend the next three years together. Having gone our separate ways, I haven't seen him for over thirty years, but I hope he's well & I hope he's happy, whatever he's doing & wherever he is doing it.

@@ProfessorofRock The band had a totally different sound than it previously had. Much like Van Halen when Roth left. Of course the people who were the genesis of the band names were still there, the Van Halen brothers, and McVie and Fleetwood so it was "their" band. I always said Van Halen should of changed their name to "New Van Halen", and use the initials, "NVH" as the band's acronym name. I actually saw Van Halen on their first "Big" tour opening for Yes. They blew Yes away they were so good, and their first album wasn't playing anywhere yet. I got the ticket because my foster brother's friend's kid brother got caught cutting school (Don't ditch Catholic school, they pay attention.) and his parents grounded him with no exceptions. Another great episode!!! In my mind, Fleetwood Mac can be categorized by the eras represented in the band: The original "Blues" sound of the Peter Green era; the Mystical Rock period of the Bob Welch era; the Pop Rock giants of the original Buckingham/Nicks era; the interim period of time with Billy Burnette, Rick Vito, AND Dave Mason; and the reunited era from The Dance onward. Many people have a favorite era and many barely acknowledge the times that aren't among their favorites (sometimes, the Bob Welch and Billy Burnette eras are largely forgotten). However, I feel like each period of the band's past is equally important and vital to their collective history!!! And for whatever it's worth, I absolutely LOVE the Bob Welch era... and I count "Time" among my very favorite Fleetwood Mac albums!!!

@@KevyNova Buckingham learned the guitar riffs, keyboard/horn parts (and the synth tone), and drums, from the Kate Bush record, sped it up a little, new lyrics, and.....new song. If you're able to speed up (an mp3?) the Bush song, and listen to the parts I mentioned, it is pretty obvious. Thanks; David.

I was waiting for Lindsey to become a breakaway star, and was rooting for him, but nothing really caught fire for me.. The only single I vaguely enjoyed was the theme to the movie Vacation, Holiday Road..

@@ProfessorofRock I have.. he always had a more eclectic pop sound for his solo albums.. I thought to distance himself from the Fleetwood sound, and I often wondered if it’s why he never caught on as a solo, while Stevie and Christine seemed to stick to the formula..just my perception..

Lindsey had potential, but may have been spooked by the negative reaction to Tusk.

@@petercena9497 Tusk was such an extreme departure coming off Rumors, makes you wonder what they were thinking.. I get being experimental, but wow.. perhaps feeling they could do no wrong?.. My wife and I saw Billy Burnette with Fleetwood Mac and it was obvious that he couldn't perform Lindsey's parts live. That mid 1990s version of Mac was very disappointing. My wife said that at least it gave her a restroom break in the middle of a multi artist show.

People don't know this (or don't want to accept it) but most domestic violence incidents begin with the woman attacking the man.

Not. Most Way to blame the victims. I do believe men get punished for just defending themselves. And that's not right. But there are men out there that vicious, abusive monsters.

Percentage-wise, men are mostly abusers, but some women abuse their partners; case in point, Amber Heard. Society is slow to realize that women abuse men in relationships. But abusing a partner, male or female, is wrong. Lindsay really did love Stevie, but fame and drugs destroyed whatever feelings they had; they certainly weren't the first rock couple who had troubles but made great music (Ike and Tina Turner, for example). Christine was an incredible songwriter and keyboardist in her own right. She was the anchor to Fleetwood Mac and got everyone on the same page; her death marks the end of the band as we know it.

Awe man. See what you started? It's always the mans fault. Women don't need evidence. Their accusations are good enough. Period.

Recent crime stats, now that men are starting to report abuse AND they are finally believed, show a slightly higher amount done by women. Still, men are still at risk of arrest if they report violence against them, there are few if any men's shelters or the like, and society doesn't readily accept men as victims of DA even in the face of hard proof.
