Hi guys, your broccoli and carrot are like they are as they've been left in too long. I think your carrot must have been from last year, when due to lack of watering it split and then continued to grow. I grow carrot in toilet roll cardboard tubes, in the beds, which encourages them to grow straight. Keep well watered. 1 or 2 seeds per roll. Happy growing! 😊

The Broccoli has bolted to seed because it's too warm, brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower etc) grow late Autumn to Winter. Carrots are a singular root, deformities are usually from debris in the soil. Also, it is best to arrange your vege garden beds into plants grown for leaves (herbs, lettuce), for fruit (tomatoes, capsicum), for root (carrot, beetroot) so you can tailor nutrients to improve the main aspect you are wanting to harvest. At the start of each growing season rotate your crops between beds to avoid nutrient build up or deficiencies

With the warmer weather, you'll get more eggs from the chicken. Especially letting them free range like that, they have more opportunities eat spring protein, slugs, bugs and worms that are becoming more active. They're just small dinosaurs who need a little help getting the protein they need to keep them warm and producing eggs in the colder months, my friend gives them roadkill in the winter and she has as many eggs in winter as she does summer.

Hi. Love the content. I am pretty sure that if the dill has an aniseed flavour/taste that it is actually Fennel. 😂 Slasher is an amazing product but does require a couple of treatments as do most "natural" weed killers. Nonainic Acid will do the trick. I really love watching your garden grow. ❤

Yes, the fennel fronds (or leaves) looks very similar to dill but the root bulb is the difference. Fennel bulb is anise and very flavorful!

For the bindis they grow and then go to seed in winter and the seed balls mature and start opening in early spring so you want to spray them with a broad leaf herbicide before the seed matures . It will take several years to beat them and be aware of seed stuck in the tyres of your gator etc. or you'll spread them even further .
@lindasyarnbarn5176

When you pull your weeds, you should put them into a container while you’re removing them and dump them onto the back corner of the property. Just throwing them into the path will likely start growing in your paths. You should totally remove them from the area. Definitely try to remove them from your garden before they go to seed so they don’t spread.

One little improvement for the vegie project would be to invest in a “green house / seed germination house”. I am sure you will enjoy planting seeds and starting plants prior to placing those seedlings into the ground. Very satisfying watching your projects come to life. Thanks for sharing.

Refine your weed spray technique... for the slasher, make it stronger, but the secret to any chemical is to let it get to the roots - spraying the foliage only kills off the leaves and top stuff, it needs to carry down to the roots, which is where they grow from, and why they grow back... get the spray on the underground part of the plant... even if that means whipper snipping the stuff fairly short and spraying the stubs of the weeds so the chemical is absorbed down into the roots... another tip to collect seed from the plants, esp. really small seed is to use a rubber band and place a paper bag over the seeding heads, and shake them into the bag... then, label the bag and put them away for next season...

On the dill, you should be able to cut the flowers and leaves off. You should dry them. They’re good to cook with and store well when dried. Use them to make pickles or any vegetables you want to pickle.

*Without actually touching them, to me, the pea leaves turning lighter could be the natural maturity coloration and no concern. I did see some yellowing and wilting and that is usually over watering or spacing issues. When the foliage of the peas is too dense, the lower leaves create an interlocked cover and the soil stays too moist. There could also be a problem with the soil itself containing too much nitrogen. Next planting, I would suggest to space them out a bit to let the sun be able to hit the ground. If it is a fungal mildew, you can use a solution of water and baking soda or potassium bicarbonate to kill it without needing harsher pesticides. Thanks for sharing your garden with us, Nicole!!

Maggie is so cute, reminds me of Santa’s little helper from the simpsons 😂 Nicole if you trim the flower buds before they emerge it’ll make the dill plant put all its energy into producing the leaf you harvest. Maybe do half pruned and let the other self seed. It does tend to get very leggy if you don’t prune it though.

@@nicolet607 Once dill flowers, the plant is likely ready to drop seed and die (it’s how they reproduce). You can replant the seeds later. If you let them self seed, the plant will become a woody, leggy mess. Leaf trimmings down to the bottom of the stem will encourage lateral growth instead of height, you can eat all parts of the plant, and it will freeze well.

So with the broccoli you actually planted a bit early so they got to their seed cycle just in time. Collect the seeds and re plant and they should produce the broccoli you’re looking for. Actually impressive you got to the seed cycle so quickly! I actually have no idea what I’m talking about
@lukiluvssuga

A couple of warm days can make broccoli bolt (go to seed) - there are better varieties that are less sensitive and less prone to bolting. The traps may do nothing for the leaves being eaten. If it’s a snail or a slug you’ll see the silvery trail over parts of the leaves. The biggest problem I have with all brassicas is the brassica moth & butterfly. They lay their little white/cream eggs on the undersides of the leaves and from the moment they hatch the larve consume the leaves until they are big fat green caterpillars. Turn over the leaves with small holes and big ones and guarantee you’ll find very little green looking slugs up to quite large ones getting ready to transform and start the destruction all over. One or two large ones can decimate a plant in 2-3 days. Best to just get some gloves on and check the underside of every leaf, pick them off into a jar of soapy water. Honestly easiest to put bug netting over brassica beds because they are relentless.
