Why does it feel like Will Self is being played by Peter Cook in this episode?

Will self is like a bond villain with no one to fight, his waxwork escaped one day and became alive, and it walks the earth, shouting haikus into the sky and whispering soft threats into the ears of passing pensioners, or he could just be a twat

Will Self in my opinion is on of the most complexly profound idiosyncratic characters of modern literature. He's a genius with a subconscious arrogance that intrigues me.

I'm with Will Self on B&Bs. Me and three friends once stayed at one which seemed quite nice, until we got shown into the dining room for breakfast. The whole room was filled with stuffed animals of varying size and species. It was the creepiest meal I have ever had. Hundreds of tiny glass eyes, from wierdly postured dead things, watching our every move. Brrr.

I thought the point was that these are the things that would go to create your own personal little hell on earth - say, being stuck behind slow walkers with a sock that's fallen down into your shoe and having to listen to Abba for eternity - and the fact that Room 101 is supposed to contain things that will break your spirit entirely is just exaggeration for comic effect. But hey, I don't imagine very much thought went into it.

Good old George was a great critic, but a fairly middling novelist. 1984 is a sort of meeting of his two strands which somehow worked.

Will Self or EL Wisty?
@wildvenisson13 жыл бұрын
@bobnlouie But that's a matter of taste, not something that make s a B&B better or worse. Then again I say that as a person who sees taxidermia as an art form. You're giving an inanaimate corpse a semblance of the life it once had. Besides anything taxidermed is actually only the skin and fibres of the animal, the rest is an exoskeleton designed to fit the animal, a flesh jacket fairly similar to wearing fur or leather only that the animal died often naturally and was reconstructed artfully.

I think Will's game is just to (seriously) take the piss out of anything and everything which takes itself seriously, including, and especially, stupid shows like Room 101 which self-evidently dumb down the populous. Guests go on shows like this simply for the cheque. So why not fuck up the host's and the audience's minds AND get paid for it.

Will Self sounds like Pete off Pete and Dud, a bit. Not at all provocative of any urge to jump off a bridge; on the contrary quite engaging. I don't know about his manor - somewhere in London, where the dead go.
