Room thermostat in the hall. What to check for maximum efficiency.

A lot of us still have fixed wall stats in the hall. Here is a video on what can go wrong and how to gain more efficiency and save on your heating bill. If your hall rad is last on circuit then it may be a bypass rad in that case do not fit a thermostatic valve on it.

hi al when i got my central heating install 18 yeas a go by british gas i have abut 8 rad fitted with a thermostatic valve expect the one in hallway why is that thanks.
@dereton33
@dereton33 4 жыл бұрын
That is the one used to govern overall temperature for the whole system and could also be the bypass radiator. If it is, you are not allowed to put a thermostatic rad valve on it. New Combis come with bypass valves fitted now and most new modern F and E systems have bypass valves fitted .

Hi, My thermostat is the same as your thumbnail pic. My question is when i turn it above the clicking noise to 15 degrees or even to 25 degrees it comes on full blast with both. Why is this? At 15 degrees does it come on full blast then lower its self once 15 degrees is achieved if so where is it measuring the temp? At the combi boiler area or the thermostat area?
@emrankhanlearnwithme4474
@emrankhanlearnwithme4474 2 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention is it measuring the temperature of the air when the boiler tries to match the desire thermostat temp.
@dereton33
@dereton33 2 жыл бұрын
The temperature of the air is what is measured, whatever you set the stat to, the heating will run until it reaches that temperature.

I have brought a Honeywell dy90e thermostat and watched your clip but I have 4 wires. Blue, grey, earth and brown. Any ideas which ones I use. Thanks kevin
@dereton33

Check which is the switch live with a test meter, usually the grey.
@MrKev6259
@MrKev6259 3 жыл бұрын
If you don’t have a test meter, is there another way. 2nd port is black with a small blue sleeve on it. 3rd if grey. 4th is not used and 1st brown. That’s it. I pretty confident with electrics but tbh I know I use 2?as you video states but you have 2 and I have 4. I don’t want to mess it up. Cheers Kevin

The problem I have is the thermostat turning the boiler on every 10 mins turning off after 5 mins its annoying what I would like is turning on every 30 mins for 10 mins is their such a thermostat that you can manually set to operate In this way
@thpxs0554
@thpxs0554 4 жыл бұрын
Mine does that, in my case it’s the boiler internal stat that switches it off after a few minutes, ( once it’s up to heat ) it’s set to max. When the boiler goes off the room stat is still calling for heat. So maybe if you check the boiler stat it still has more adjustment to max? Mines a 25 year old gloworm KFB and heats the house like a furnace so I put up with it cycling.
@kenboon1478
@kenboon1478 4 жыл бұрын
@@thpxs0554 what I do is turn it on and off manually which is sufficient.. A boiler turning on every 10 mins is a nuisance nothing I have tried seems to stop this ! maybe a thermostat which is controlled by a timer so you can set it to come on every 30 mins because every 10 mins is pointless waste of gas and electric when the house is already to hot

ken boon ...does sound like the boiler stat is switching it off while the room stat is still calling for heat, then it cools down for a few mins cos the pump overrun is pushing the water round then it starts the cycle again. Is the bulb for the boiler stat in the right position? Most stats are still available dead cheap. 👍

hi ken. invest in a boiler manager,worth every penny,boilers are stupid & need taming,these devices tame them to an inch,please read up on them we did & never looked back.

Thought you couldn't have a TRV fitted to a radiator in a space with a thermostat. Or at least one radiator needs to be without a TRV as if the thermostat is calling for heat and all the radiators are turned off via TRVs the boiler will be heating up and the pump will be working against itself.
@dereton33
@dereton33 4 жыл бұрын
Not so long as you have a bypass fitted which is the case for most modern combi boilers.
@BadandMadMartin
@BadandMadMartin 4 жыл бұрын
@@dereton33 I don't think it's allowed under regs. Unless regs have changed. As not all boilers have a bypass.
@dereton33
@dereton33 4 жыл бұрын
You may have one fitted, check by looking at the spec sheet for your combi boiler, or on an F and E system it will be located by the copper cylinder.
@BadandMadMartin
@BadandMadMartin 4 жыл бұрын
@@dereton33 I'll always have one radiator without a TRV for safety as a bypass regardless of if the boiler has a bypass or not. As its for safety and regs. The better solution would be to move the objects in front of the thermostat or move the thermostat.
