Excellent comparison video. Actually loving the 690 (696 here in Europe for some reason!). Had it's first run yesterday and it was really great for our purposes. No pets or kids so we don't need heavy duty vacuuming. We also got the Virtual Wall barrier included which is very useful. I know it's not the most powerful one but it's perfect for us!

Just bought the s9+ for my upstairs (all carpet). I have all but eliminated my need to vacuum with our shark upright. Did a non scientific test and let the roomba clean our master bedroom then went behind with the vacuum to see how much debris was left behind. Picked up virtually everything. We have mid-pile carpet and 2 great pyrenees that sleep in our room every night, best robot vac and well worth the cost imo.

Important Questions for us. The Roborock uses LIDAR. A more-or-less 'active method. It supplies it's own light. The Roomba uses a camera - relying on room light? Questions re Roomba's ability to reliably map and navigate in differing lighting conditions. 1 - What happens if mapping/navigating at night? 2 - What happens with mapping/navigating in extremly bright area - where the light may be shining directly into the Roomba? (We live in Arizona and morning light is bright and shines at low as well ashigh angles.) 3 - Does the Roomba use it's own light source in mapping and is this IR or some other wave length? Many thanks. Your reviews are so methodical and helpful.

Vacuum Wars is the go to channel for vacuum reviews! Just a disclaimer I work at iRobot and although RVC's are compared on Price, Features, Navigation, Cleaning performance Etc...not many reviewers talk about the durability or reliability of these RVC's. One thing you might want to mention is iRobot designs their RVC's to be modular where most parts of the robot can be easily replaced by the customer with a Philips screw driver...like the wheel motors, the cleaning modules, side brush modules, etc. With so many motors, sensors, and parts in a robot vacuum today it's not a matter of IF something will fail but when it does fail do you need to buy a whole new unit or can you just buy a replaceable part? With a Roomba you can just buy the spare part instead of buying a whole new RVC with some of the other brands. iRobot is initially more expensive but I think the total usage you get out of it and the replaceable parts may last longer than the cheaper brands which is still a hefty $300~$400. I'm also not sure if you'll get adequate customer support with some of the Chinese brands where as iRobot is based in the US with global offices in Europe and Asia for customer support. Vacuum Wars it would be helpful if you can point out which brands are pretty easy to take apart and replace parts and which ones are designed not to be taken apart.

Samuel Lee, I totally agree. My old beaten Roomba 581 - a model from 2007 - continues to do a good job on a daily basis. After years of wear, I replaced the original green cleaning module with the current gray module that is more resistant to dust ingress. The green module had its plastic deformed due to dust friction. I also changed the vacuum cleaner module from green to gray, which is much more efficient. And batteries, oh how he likes to destroy batteries, eheheh. It is a bit blind due to old age and collides a lot in my furniture, but I think with some love it will last a few more years. He has the company of a Neato XV 21, another dinosaur that helps me with daily cleaning. Both collaborate to leave my house without dust and my dog's fur. Thank you so much for this wonderful machine and I suggest that iRobot sell a simpler and cheaper S9 so I can retire my old 581 with dignity.

Nice to hear your information Samuel. We got our first iRobot, a Roomba 696, not the highest level model but great for us with no kids or pets at home. It's first run was great, love the WiFi control, the easy cleaning, and as you mentioned, easily available parts including the consumables like brushes and filters. We're based in Istanbul, Turkey, and it is extremely difficult to get spares and consumables for the Chinese brands, even big ones like Xiaomi. The easy availability of these products is very important.

I agree with that. We have a Roomba from 2008 and it's still going strong. We've only had to change the battery. On the other hand, the LG "Roomba" that we have on our other house is starting to feel really weak both battery and suction wise and it´s just 6 years old.

Bought the s9 based on this review. Just thought you might want to know that these are having serious issues. I've only been using mine for 2 months and it's throwing an error 31. Researched this and called tech support. Turns out its it's a big problem... so much so that they are replacing vacuums and they are on backorder... and have no idea when they'll be in. Who knows if the warranty will be extended because of the wait. These things are over $1k and having these issues. I've read many people are on their 3rd replacement because of this error code. The unit works AMAZINGLY... when it works. I have 2 other roombas and 3 eufys, My grandmother owns the shark robot vacuum, and this one is hands down the best.... but not having a working 1000$ vacuum for an undisclosed amount of time... and not knowing if the warranty will be extended is crazy.

The Nature Guy i got the e5 a week ago, and its amazing, but mine has been having issues. It would only last 50 minutes before saying it was returning to charge and the battery was low, and whether it made it to the base or not, on the app it would give me an error saying “Charging Error 6” but it would still charge. How long does your machine last before it completely dies? Mine lasts between 65-75 minutes before dying completely. Well i told them about it and after all the tests they had me do, they sent me a battery, but that was doing the same thing. So now they are sending me another robot. But I’m still very curious how long a normal E5 would last, because if i ever start off the convo with iRobot CS that its not lasting very long, they all the canned answer, “it lasts anywhere between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the type of floor your on.” I should get my new one in a few days i hope to let you all know what happens.

The Turcan's tribe I honestly was bothered by how much maintenance my 980 took to keep cleaning. Eventually got out into a box for 3 years. Got the s9+ and it’s awesome. I don’t touch this thing at all. Had it for 3 weeks and have yet to change one trash bag. I’m now using the 980 upstairs and it’s actually very impressive how much better it cleans than our dyson. First run couldn’t complete because the bin was full. Now I have to empty the bin once a week and have it vacuum Mondays and Fridays. The mop is really great with how much it cleans. One reusable pad lasts 2 passes along with the solution. So Monday and Friday mornings at 4 am it runs. S9 runs every morning at 3 am. I clean it once a week along with the 980.

The older roomba 980 works in tandem with the m6 braava. I cannot imagine the 960 not having that feature. I have both plus the s9+. Whenever I send the 980, which cleans upstairs, the iRobot app asks me if I want to mop when vacuuming is finished. The s9+ difference is basically the individual rooms and keep out areas. Honestly, the 980 seems to navigate better. It doesn’t bump hard into objects at all while the s9 does some times. The m6 mop slams into things and is so aggressive at cleaning baseboards it closes doors which it cannot mop behind as a result.

I'm an owner of the S9+ and prior owner of the 980. The S9 navigates the house *much* quicker - not by being faster, but by not going back and forth, entering rooms multiple times. What was a 6 hour job (including recharges) is now done in 4 (recharge - not plural - included). My gripe, other than price, is the rollers/extractors. I recently had to buy a replenishment kit - only available online, thanks for the forward thinking, iRobot 🙄 - as hair was getting picked up so quickly, and so much of it, that it embedded itself in the light-green roller end and, before I knew this was happening, caused the axle to *shear off* 😱. And at $45 for rollers only or $75 for a replenishment kit, it ain't cheap. I got the S9+ shortly after release this year, so it's my only concern. Regardless, I recommend both bots - they have *replaced* vacuuming in my home, which was the goal. A friend that has a 960 - by my recommendation - still runs a manual vacuum. I don't have any numbers on if his home really needs it, but I do know that I get complements (as weird as it sounds) by people who step into my house. Something to keep in mind, less vacuuming vs no vacuuming.

4 hours to clean? You must have a big house. My bots fill the bin in less than an hour, so a 4 hour cleaning would not work without human intervention without the clean base. Yes, the house looks great after the cleaning. Love the straight carpet lines. And the robot gets underneath things I wouldn't bother to reach doing it by hand. Under the bed has never been so clean.

I bought the 960 for $550 and it was on sale from $650 and it’s now at $400. I think I can expect a similar price with the s9 2 years from now. After all, I don’t have any issue with my 960, I’m just upset it doesn’t have the room setting capabilities. Though I find it more annoying now which is for all Roombas, that they only allow 1 person to have access to it from the app. I don’t understand why it’s protecting my privacy to let someone vacuum my floors and know the bin needs to be emptied.

markmt1988 the 980 came out first, then the 960 came out and they stopped offering the 980... it replaced the 980 as the best 900 series. Just like when the new Colorado came out with a v6, it replaced the previous one with a v8. The v8 made higher average power and a lot more torque. Replace: take the place of. "Ian's smile was replaced by a frown" “Replace” doesn’t require an upgrade or maintenance of status quo... literally, iRobot replaced the 980 with the 960. The fact that they decided to make it a cheaper unit has nothing to do with it. 980 was the best 900 series, now the 960 is.

I want the S9+ sooo bad but I can't seem to convince my husband over the cost of it. D: Might get the i7+ to save the $400 but im so unsure. We have a lab and I to clean up alot after.

Angelica - my wife told me I no longer have to sweep and mop if we get it. They work so well. The s9 is really nice, and the trash can it came with is awesome. Get the s9 if you have mixed flooring. Otherwise the i7 will do just as well on carpet. My older 980 does just as well on carpet, but struggled on hardwood. The s9 doesn’t struggle on hardwood flooring.

Firestarter true. The suction of the s9 is so strong that it does a great job on hard wood floor.

Just on the I7 - I don`t think it is amazing with carpet - I have a medium pile carpet and it does not hoover well at all! If you have short pile carpet or hard floors it is sufficient - otherwise buy the Neato D750 pet edition (don`t even have pets!) Even the roborock performs badly on medium pile carpets.

Kind of crazy that the i9+ cost $1400. If they charged $1000 it might be worth it.

I got mine for $1500 from Best Buy... it was an s9+ and braava jet m6 bundle.

The price of the S9 would get you 6 months of a cleaner every 2 weeks and you get the dusting, kitchen and bathroom/toilet done

So buy the e5 for 280 on Amazon wait another five years when the e5 dies and the cost to repair can't be justified and then get the next 300 dollor roomba that's probably will be the s9+ and repeat lol.

Colin MacLaughlanWeir no way that maid will keep your floors as perpetually clean. Pair it with the m6 mop like I have and you’ll never want to go more than a few days without both being run. It’s amazingly clean everyday, and will be for years to come. Which makes dusting and cloroxing the toilet much more bearable considering the lightened workload.

From someone with an i7+, an s9+, and 3 - m6 iRobot mops, take it from me, STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM ANYTHING MADE BY THEM AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE! Their performance, to a machine, is a joke. Their tech support is beyond horrific.

S9+ look like a mix between Deebot and Neato.

I have an i7+ and an s9+ and I gotta say the s9+ is a piece of junk. I've had them replace the unit once already. It repeatedly can't find its way back to its station. It'll often just stop in the middle of a room 'cuz it ran out of power. It's brush easily gets caught in rugs to the point where the whole vacuum gets stuck. And at least a 3rd of the time it says it can't find the room it's supposed to clean. My i7+ isn't perfect, but it's WAY more reliable than the s9+.
