I bought the Shark Auto-Empty vacuum while having some worries from multiple other videos saying that they had problems with it. I've had it for about two weeks, now, and all I can say is that all of my worries were futile. I'm not affiliated with any of these KZbin channels or companies, but was a concerned consumer, like all of you. I have a 500 sq. ft apartment with hardwood floors, rugs, chairs, plants, guitar stand, etc. I ran a full cleaning twice a day for about a week until I got a full map of my apartment, which is the point when you can tell the robot to clean specific rooms. So, that's not a dealbreaker for me for saving like $600. Once you get through that first week, then you're completely hands-off. Another thing with the mapping, I find that it's done a very good job of getting into all the nooks and crannies of my apartment, and it's pretty gentle when hitting things. Wasn't close to knocking over my guitar stand, and I don't think it will knick the wooden feet of my furniture. There was only one part of my apartment where I had to use the provided "no-go" magnetic strips -- a multi-level shelf that had a low lip on the bottom shelf it kept trying to get up on. It seems in the future, with the app-based "no-go" zones, I'll be able to get rid of that one strip. I was also worried about noise, but it's not even close to the volume of my traditional vacuum cleaner, and it actually seems to do a good job of cleaning, even when running on Eco (quiet) mode. You'll know that it's on, but it's probably equivalent to someone washing dishes in volume. Also, the battery life on my particular vacuum has been longer than the 60 minutes they claim, but it's likely to go down over time. I haven't had any hair stuck in the roller, and the app hasn't been a bad experience. In fact, it's been pretty positive. The only thing with the app is that it was a little touchy for me when I was dragging the boxes around to designate the rooms on my map, but that will likely improve with software updates and is only something you need to do once. Also, I wish you could schedule the cleaning of specific rooms. You can currently only schedule full cleanings and specify specific rooms during ad hoc cleanings (or do full house ad hoc cleanings). In the end, I have no doubts in my mind that I made the right purchase with getting the Shark Auto-Empty in comparison to the expensive Roomba alternatives. I love this thing. :)

I sincerely salute you for putting the Deebot at the top of the list of CFM rankings again unlike the last video, for mentioning how long it took to clean each room (a comparison table for all robot vacs would be nice like the CFM table), and for showing DB levels (another table with each power setting on each vacuum would be very nice). I still think a more objective crevice test would be nice by weighing the amount of dirt picked up. Keep up the good work.

We used a competitor vacuum for just over a year and it broke and wouldn’t pick up hair🌼 It was not a cheap model - it was the number one rated robot vacuum on a leading consumer reporting site. We tried the Roomba and it is hands down the champ. Features, brains, suction...it works better! It’s smart map feature is very helpful. Once it learns your home you can tell it which room or rooms to clean and which ones to skip. App is handy and clean and the self emptying feature is fantastic.

dyarom you got the 985. Costco does not sell the 960. Because you have the 985, you can tell your roomba to always vacuum on the high power setting which will do a better job at picking up dust from hardwood floor. To answer your question, yes I have the i7+. In my opinion it works just fine. I like that I can pick rooms individually and I can gray out areas where I don’t want my i7 to go instead of using the virtual wall that came in the box. Unfortunately the i7+ is back to regular price $999. I also have the mop robot. With both my hardwood floor looks amazing. I also have the s9+. Watching this again after seeing it when it first came out and when I got my Shark IQ. VW's bias towards the Shark is subtle, but very much there. For example, throwing in numbers for the non-cleanbase model when they were better. This isn't a review of the non-cleanbase model. VW also didn't mention that at least last year, it took 30-40 runs for the Shark to map out a simple floorplan. But, after having had the Shark for all this time, it does get the job done and has not given me any problems. I'd like to swap it with the second-floor robot, a Neato D7, to compare them, but I don't want to risk another 30-40 mapping runs. And since the 2nd floor is more complicated and larger, I don't trust that the Shark would be able to handle it. And speaking of larger floorplans, the Shark battery doesn't last very long and it takes a long time to charge and fully recharges during recharge/resume. So getting the job fully done takes a long time. I would not return the Shark and am happy with it, especially considering the much lower price. But I wanted to give a less biased opinion of the shortcomings.

I found that the first few run, with shark, you'll need to give the robot the most optimal condition to operate. This will speedup the mapping process. I got my shark to mapped my 2k square foot home after 2 runs. The optimal conditions in this case are keep your light on and clear out obstacles.

Thank you so much for this review. I bought the i7+ and for the last 30 days have not been happy with it’s performance. I’ve been thinking of taking it back to the store for a refund and just purchasing the less expensive Shark IQ and now I’m sold! I hate that the i7+ only has a brush on one side. I have noticed it tends to kick the dirt around rather than pick it up. For the price point, it shouldn’t leave anything behind and it misses areas and leaves things behind FREQUENTLY! Not to mention, it doesn’t matter how much I love things out of the way, if I leave it to clean overnight I always (and I do mean ALWAYS) wake up to a notification that it “ended the job stuck”. It’s like it only works when I’m awake and/or watching it because during those instances it NEVER gets stuck... like, I NEVER have to intervene with its cleaning when I’m awake or watching. Goodbye Roomba hello Shark! If I’m going to be disappointed in a robot’s cleaning capabilities, it makes more sense to save $400 in the process!

If your going to return your i7..get a Roborock. Non-trivial correction: The Shark IQ AE does not have a sensor in its dust bin, thus does not return to its base for emptying when full as stated in the video.
@Beanyvids3 жыл бұрын
That is definitely important and I'm glad I read your comment. I've been trying to figure out a replacement for my current aging robot vac, and one of those reasons is that the bin gets full in literally 4 minutes of vacuuming (CATS!) so I basically have to stand over it and empty it constantly, ruining the point of it being a robot. So "return to base for emptying" is kind of important. Thanks for letting me know to look into this further.

Roomba are a lot like Dyson with handvacs. If you buy the top model it is the best [atleast for a few months around it's launch], but you pay a premium for it. So like any premium eletronics ever. Of course a cheaper competitor will eventually undercut it, and force the top brand to go back to the drawing board and do that innovation that keeps them on top. As seen with the new Roomba S9 series.

@BriannaMovingMountains4 жыл бұрын
I purchased a Shark iq self empty and was really excited about it as I have an old lower model Roomba that lasted only about 6 months before the side sweeper stopped spinning correctly and it doesn't hardly pick up anything now. I also had to empty its small dirt container often as I have pets and live on a farm where dirt gets tracked in daily. I was happy with how the Roomba used to clean though. My Sharq was higher priced than the older model Roomba and has a bunch of new improved "smart" features, so I thought it would be better than the old Roomba. I'm sending it back. The wifi hasn't truly worked for the couple weeks I've had it. It will connect to the app, I set a schedule and the vacuum made a sound like the schedule was synced, but it has yet to actually run on schedule. I always have to turn it on manually. After it was momentarily connected to the app through wifi the wifi on the robot just turned off. Whenever I try to reconnect, it will show the vacuum on the app, but says there's a connecting error, or other times the wifi on the vacuum will just turn off right after I turn it on. So basically I haven't been able to use any of the "smart" features on the app side of the vacuum and have always run it manually. I do like how it goes back and forth in straight lines rather than sporadic like the old Roomba, although the Roomba did seem to make enough passes to eventually cover the whole floor. The Shark, even with going back and forth, still misses stuff. The map is pretty far off from the actual floorplan it's supposed to be cleaning. I'm unable to delete the map to have it try again because the wifi won't stay connected. When it goes in my kitchen, it starts to run straight along under the front of my cabinets. I look down and see a few cheerios and dirt from my kiddos under the edge of the counters and think it will clean it up. What it actually does is start out running straight along the counter and gradually move away at a very slight angle that eventually becomes about 6+inches away from my counters so that a small strip in front of the counters, that gradually widens, never gets vacuumed. I left the cheerios down there for a few days to check everyday after it runs through the kitchen to see if it would ever learn that area and clean it... but after a few days of staring at those cheerios I finally just swept it up, realizing that the vacuum just doesn't want to follow a straight line along my counters for some reason. Most of the time it can find it's dock just fine. There's been a few times that it had something stuck under it, a hair barrette, e.t.c and after clearing the obstruction it couldn't find its way back. I do love the self empty option and that it goes back empties, and then goes back to work where it left off...but I'm not entirely excited with the fact that half the features of the vacuum (wifi, app, scheduling, mapping) aren't usable at the price of the vacuum. It's $500 new, I paid $320 for an awesome Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal, but a vacuum whether it's $320 or $500, that's a lot of money and I'd expect it to operate as advertised. After reading more reviews recently, I've found wifi issues are a huge problem with this vacuum.

Update: I was sent a return packing slip and instructions and was planning on heading to town to return my vacuum. A couple days after I recieved my return instructions, etc, I had turned it on to see if it might maybe work better. The wifi light was on! Which is totally new for me to see it actually running, vacuuming my house with that light on. Everytime I've tried to turn it on, it doesn't stay on, but now it was. So I went on the app and saw options pop up that I'd never seen before like adjust the power of the vacuum. I tried to turn it up and I heard the vacuum get louder! I was super excited. I saw a pause button and pushed it, then nothing. It said it couldn't connect with the vacuum, although it was in the same area as when it was just connected to it. So I thought it wasn't working again. Now everyday it seems to be working the majority of the time, wifi light on and I can start it and pause it from the app... except it had yet to start on schedule by itself... until today, when I heard it going around 630 am although the schedule is set for 8am.🤔

Question: I've asked before and sort of gotten an answer, but still not sure. Do each of these vacuums go back to the base when they are full and what triggers this return to the base? A big issue I have with my 2 current robots is they keep vacuuming even after they are full. If the ones with clean bases can prevent this, either by sensing full and emptying or by periodically (and hopefully that period is adjustable), that would be a huge plus. At least it would be for my scenario. My current solution is to make them do two runs. Not ideal.
@VacuumWars5 жыл бұрын
Yes they all can sense when their bin is full and return to the dock to empty it. Once that is done they return to where they left off. In other words the recharge and resume feature now also is a bin dump and resume feature.
@RobotMasters5 жыл бұрын
So in both the Roomba s9+ and i7+ there a setting to either keep cleaning until the job done or return when to the Dock when the bin full. I have noticed the robot will return when the bin 3/4th full I guess it allows easier emptying of the bin. The Shark also has a similar feature too so all 3 robots have a sensor that can detect when the bin full.

Interesting that the s9+ and Shark had a more advanced navigation than the i7+ eventhough the s9 and i7 technically have the same navigation camera. Think twice before getting a Shark IQ robot. I messed with it for three days now, returning it. I am getting a Roomba, I will review that as well after I try it. I just want something that works. There are so many problems I almost don't know where to begin. But here is a few major ones. 1) On my average houses 1st floor, the Shark does not work. The robot's waste bin gets full and jams. The robot does not return to base often enough. There is no waste sensor telling the robot that it is full and the roller just stuffs debris and dog hair into the bin. The Shark came with a hand cut note (after thought for sure) saying to hold the dock button for 15 seconds to turn on a mode so the robot returns more frequently to the home base to empty. This did not work. If the Shark geniuses had designed a software option where I could choose how often to return home, it might work. 2) While cleaning /mapping it stalled and said clear obstruction under the robot, I didn't clear anything but told it to go to the doc. It moved a couple feet then stopped and had the same warning. Then I looked underneath it there was no obstruction then I set it down and told her to go home again and it went in circles and said it can't find home. 3) When mapping, the robot must have gotten discombobulated and instead of a square 4 room floor, it mapped a very long house with one long room. Suggestion: have a non cleanin mapping mode..duh! 4) The app logs itself out. 5) The little flippers often fling a small crumb into previously cleaned areas leaving them behind. There is a good simple solution to this problem, but I am not helping these folks. 6) On a good note, it picked up a crayon and jams the bin so full of debris you can hardly empty it. Recommendations for shark: give customers an option to set the return time for emptying. Redesign the whisker shape to prevent debris flinging. Include an optional non cleaning mapping mode.

Can you please advise on high pile carpet? I can’t find any reviews anywhere about which is best for this. I am worried I will buy one and it won’t work on these types of carpet in my house Thanks Dani
@mackone99155 жыл бұрын
No mention of the fact that the Shark not only does not have "no go" zones on the app or even small beacon towers (like the old Roombas)but, in fact, still requires you to put down black strips on your floor to exclude it from an area? No mention of the "pre and post motor filters" in Shark's base and the required maintenance of same? No mention of the loud "slapping" noise made by Shark's new brush (noted by several people who've tried it). These are significant issues which seem to result from Shark's not wanting to get sued by IRobot. They also go a long way towards explaining why the I7 and S9 cost more. Given your inclusion of price as a key parameter it seems like an objective reviewer would have mentioned these things.
@arevee94295 жыл бұрын
Would have been interesting if he gave a 'price no object' opinion as well.
@mackone99155 жыл бұрын
@@arevee9429 Yeah, including price as a parameter maybe isn't the clearest way to go. Might be better to discuss all parameters and then present pricing as the decision point so that people can decide for themselves what the different attributes are worth to them. Either way, though, you need a real discussion of the attributes. It's his channel but I don't think people are going to love spending $650 on the Shark (Amazon) on his recommendation and then pulling a rolled black magnetic boundary strip out of the box and being surprised that they're supposed lay this across they're hardwood or tile floor. I did notice a few things that did put the IQ in the advantage that I think many people missed. I am not going to say it was with intent mind you. When you did the first mapping part where you showed the white areas where it had been and where it had missed, you had moved a few items in the room around to give the IQ an advantage such as the Dyson fan starting at 1:10. The charge station was either smaller than the Roomba's or in a different spot. It is hard to tell because the camera was moved for the IQ but not the Roombas. Also when you did the IQ, you gave it a solid white line while you gave the Roomba's more of a spray effect to make it look like it had not done the area enough. The table and chairs was also moved for the IQ but the Roombas had the same set up. Also you claimed the IQ was as good on pick up as others but in the 5:20 mark you can clearly see it leaves behind quite a bit in the top right corner that it had to go back over again to get.

Maybe they have bad quality control and I got two lemons in a row but if so then that's even more reason to not buy one. I mean self empty base is great, but if it can't map your home, requires constant baby sitting and still sucks, and the only solution is delete the map and try again... It's just not a good device.

@@something86783 The flaws in Shark IQ thus far are: #1 - Takes 30-40-60 runs to create a single map of the house/floor. #2 - Does not detect when full, and auto empty. #3 - Low battery life - Can not do an entire floor on a single battery charge. #4 - Can not make and store more than 1 map. #5 - Clogs/Stops working due to over filling. #6 - Lacks a return to station/empty button. Some of these things can be fixed via firmware updates, others should be considered permanent features.

First I would to say how much I really appreciate you doing these tests. It does help to try and make an informed decision. I read the comments below as well, and one that stands out is from Jack Turner. Thanks Jack for putting that info out. I think it is important to know if Shark is going to have the "no-go lines" as a part of their app. To me that is pretty important, as I had a Roomba vacuum (until it found a freshly pile of dog poop my yorkie decided to leave for me in our living room, and then spread it every where around the house) always had a problem of running over an extension cord I had up against the wall for a table lamp, etc. By the way, I kept the dog (barely), but had to get rid of the Roomba :). So now I need a new one. I have learned that I the ones that will clean in a straight line are the way to go, but I also think it's important to be able to control the robot vacuum to go here, but not here, and if I can get this thing to miss my extension cords, then I'm sold. Such a pain.. Again, thanks for all the work you put in these. I'm a little worried that you may be a little on the Shark side since you were paid for it. Cool of you to admit it though. I will continue to watch you stuff. Great job!

@@VacuumWars I find myself still having to figure out really which one of these robot vacuums are the best out there. I did try purchasing a "eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 15C MAX" from Amazon, but had a few problems with it (hair got caught in the rollers which were the bristle brushes, the side brushes that get stuff from edges or corners seem to bend, and stay that way within 3-4 cleanings, it was too thin if there is such a thing, it continued to get stuck under our coffee table that was on top of a throw run in our living area). Amazon was really nice and allowed me to return the unit for a full refund, so I do want to purchase my new unit from these guys just due to the way they have treated me on my orders with them. There are so many of them that I easily get confused on which unit is really the best out there. Do you have a chart that we can look at that list all of the units out in the market and what it can do (like a check list)? It took 53, 58, 56, 48, and 46 mins to conduct subsequent cleaning runs in this exact order. I only run my Roomba twice a week. I removed the divider on the smart app between my living room and a long hallway that leads to my front door. I wanted the Roomba to clean the hallway length wise as it cleaned the living room. Not to mention it would make cleaning the hallway and living room as one room faster. It worked because of the 46 min cleaning run today. By the way, I leave my lights off.

We just did the same. We have two dogs and a cat (one dog is a golden retriever). I used to clean the brushes and the caster wheel every single day on the 690 because otherwise it was severely tangled with hair. So far (1 week with the S9+ running daily), I haven’t had to clean hair out of anything and flipping the S9 over it is completely tangle-free (the rollers and the brilliantly rear-placed caster wheel are clear). It’s an absolutely incredible machine, especially with animal hair. You will be so much happier with the S9+ upgrade.

Justin D. We had our 690 for 2 solid years of running it every day. I had to replace the corner brush motor one time and when the replacement motor started sounding funny again after 4 months (despite hair being cleaned from it) it was the last straw. The first time we ran the S9+ it took like over 4 hours and emptied itself and recharged two times (it didn’t have a map yet but the amount of hair it picked up compared to the 690 was probably quadrupled). The ends of the rubber brushes extend over where it connects so no hair wraps around there anymore! I tell ya, the 690 was put through hell in our house yet still with just a new $20 corner brush motor, it would run near perfect for someone without a golden retriever. It was my first roomba and it made me trust the build quality of iRobot enough to feel investing in the S9+ was worth it.

Vacuum Wars, I have to say I'm super disappointed. I returned the S9+ based on your review here and the review of the Shark IQ and bought the Shark IQ. I received the Shark IQ a couple days ago and its literally a POS! between trying to get the Shark on my wifi and calling support because it wouldn't and then they couldn't figure it out....30+ mins later it finally connect to my home wifi. Same process took maybe two mins with the S9+. BTW, Shark support is outsourced and so they barely speak English....what fun that was. The other problem was that the Shark would run low on battery and go charge after about 30 mins (on "normal" speed) and then it would stat from the same point and not remember where it left off so the damn thing would not map the house. When i called support about that they couldn't figure it out and said they would need to escalate to support but he couldn't do it...they have to call you with 24-48 hrs. Are you kidding me!? I told the guy if i don't get a call back tmrw I'm returning this garbage. 10 mins later the same guy calls me and ask me to go into the shark app settings>robot name> and check to see if the "Recharge and Resume" was on..it was not (brilliant app design...not). Supposedly, that was keeping the Shark IQ from remembering where in the clean cycle it left off. I turned the Recharge and Resume on and started the vac; it rolled about 3 feet and stop and sat there doing nothing...no suction...nothing (2nd time that happened). After about 10 mins i went over to the robot and pressed "clean" and the damn thing started the exact same path it did 4 previous times. IT other words, it runs the same path gets low and comes back to charging station. I'll be sending the POS back once i call them in the morning. I really liked your channel but maybe you shouldn't do a "paid consulting" for these manufacturers? The only complaint i had with teh S9+ was the price and it was loud. In hind-sight maybe that was so bad...maybe i'll go back to Samsung....had that one for about 3 yrs before it crapped out.

Great video! Would you buy the regular (non auto empty) Shark IQ, or the Roomba 960 ? Thanks

From his specific Shark IQ review, I think he'd still go shark, but at that price you might as well go for the Auto Empty, or go for the much cheaper E5 Roomba.

My shark IQ had a metal clip/bar over the center of my roller and I can't find in the instructions that I'm supposed to remove it, yet I do NOT see it on any reviewer's bot. Am I supposed to remove it?

Love your review! How is the Shark IQ R101AE you reviewed different from the "Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty XL RV1001AE"? I looked online but all I could find is that the RV1001AE is a model number of the "R100". but the R100 doesn't have the self-empty bin and the RV1001 does. I was going to get a Roomba i7 but the power and suction and "crevasses" tests you did made the r7 look anemic. So, I chose the Shark 1001AE for Prime Day and hope I love it. Other reviewers said it got stuck a lot and had other problems.

i hear that, lots of people are having problems, stating that its taking more 15 runs to map the house? is that true?
@misc19575 жыл бұрын
I have been messing with mine for 3 days, with no luck. If the robot struggles to get over a threshold, it looses its position and causes errors in mapping. So, 15? maybe never.
@darrenlongo13255 жыл бұрын
It took mine 6 runs for a complete map, 400square feet , granted not a lot of space but only 6 runs. I have no issues with mine with firmware V3.4.11 (12/05/19 release)

I'm at 14 runs, 2400sf ranch, not looking like it's gonna get everything mapped correctly anytime soon....

Damn it! I just bought the i7+ and now I wish I had that shark.

Trust me you don't wish that. Vacuum Vars is the only one promoting Shark, search the youtube, there are only problems with the damn thing. App is buggy, navigation of the robot totally sucks, gets stuck or clogged all the time. I've seen video where it runs out of battery without docking. People are returning them since there are just problems problems problems. Shark don't have even sensor to detect that it's bin is full. Roombas have much better thought through systems. I think that out of these 3 the i7+ is the best one.

One other test I'd like to see is how well they can travel over transition strips. I have a couple in my house from hardwood to tile or carpet and I'm concerned they wont be able to go over them.
@ada-helenbayer11274 жыл бұрын
Travis Dunlap My Shark (the exact self-cleaning one shown in this video) transitions easily between tile floors and all of my rugs. It even runs the line between the rug and the floor to get all the crumbs and whatnot that accumulate there. Perhaps if you had a really thick shag rug it may not work, but it’s working for all my rugs here!

Is the auto empty system worth it? On my current robot vac I probably need to empty the bin once every week or so. I'm guessing with an auto empty model I'd need to empty the base bin every few months maybe? Personally I don't think I've reached the threshold where emptying the bin on my model is frequent enough to warrant upgrading. If I had a cat or a dog it would probably be worth it for me.

I feel one big thing your tests and commentary seems to be lacking is edge cleaning for carpets and roller size. On your standard round unit with the roller between the wheels that's about a 3-4" strip of carpet that the robot can never clean near an object due to the dead zone between the edge of the unit and the wheels and roller. And side brush performance on carpeted surfaces.

Hi guy how come you have never talked about or reviewed the deebot R98 which also has a self emptying bin and they might have been the first ones to come out with that but not only that it's bin is also a portable vac it would be cool to see how it compares with the three you have there anyway just a thought great show keep up the good work
