My takeaway is that there are not nearly enough options in the pocket-able spy computer market and that you have to resign yourself to a sea of nearly identical gigantic, heavy, fragile, glass sandwiches. There are almost no real attempts at true innovation in the space. Even Apple discontinued the "mini" line of phones that they tried for two years and not enough people bought because they all want huge screens to lose themselves in and become hopelessly addicted to. Good video!

I “upgraded” from a flip phone to the Palm several years ago. I resisted moving to a smartphone specifically because of the ridiculous size of most phones. I can confirm every issue you identified with the Palm. I think the battery life is the worst offender. I only use the phone for calls and texts, and for away-from-home activities, so I can get close to two days of battery life with the Mophie Juice Pack on good (no calls) days. And, unless someone miniaturizes an iPhone, I’ll hunt long and hard to replace the Palm when dies.

The battery life on the Palm had me abandoning it after only 3 months. The only way to get decent battery life is to use "Palm mode," disabling all radios. With all of the radios off, it's an all-day device. Of course, at that point, disconnected from everything, is it even a phone? I needed to be reachable, and keeping the Palm powered up and online meant such a load from charging and discharging the undersized battery that it was perpetually warm to the touch. I agree it's a beautiful object though.

I’ve only used the Palm, haven’t tried the Jelly Star yet. What’s keeping me from forking out the money for it, is the chunky build. I like the slim “premium” design of the Palm. Also it’s the display, with a 720p high ppi, the screen looks fantastic. But the battery life has got to be its biggest problem. With life mode on, battery definitely can last, but I need to be able to receive calls and texts in case of an emergency.

I think you should have mentioned that the Palm phone is marketed as a 'companion phone'. It's not meant to satisfy all the functions of a regular smartphone but in a smaller form. All I think I really need a smartphone for nowadays is mobile banking and navigation.
@Roos-Reviews8 ай бұрын
In my opinion the original idea of marketing it as a companion phone is partly why it failed. They locked it to a single network, physically modified the SIM tray to remove the eject mechanism so other sims could not easily be used and charged a monthly fee for its companion use. People gave it a shot anyway and found the 95 minute 'screen on' battery life to be too challenging to live with. To shift the many unsold units they dropped the companion idea and sold them unlocked as ordinary smart phones for a third of the original price. But the poor performance and even poorer battery life make it difficult to live with. If they had made it slightly thicker to house a larger battery and not gone down the companion route it might have had a chance as a good mini phone and we might have seen a successor by now.

Really want the jelly star but didn't get it because I worry about cracking the transparent shell. Then they announced the 4.3 inch Tank Mini, a rugged phone. But it has a laser range finder and camping light. Like who's buying these phones? what's your primary demographic Unihertz? Who is out there saying I need a rugged smart phone that's tiny, packed with 12gb of ram! but it has to have a ranger finder and 4 different light source on the back. WHO? They're doing like 75% of what I want but it's the 25% that's turning me off. Guess, I'm waiting for super jelly star 2 tournament edition ex plus alpha with the rear detachable fight stick and mini-sanwa buttons. A phone that doubles are your main fight stick because why not?

I'm just hoping for a phone line the Tank Mini, without the ruggedness, laser, lantern etc. that's much slimmer and cleaner looking. The Qin 3 ultra has my ideal design, but the internals are not adequate.

Is it just me, or there is a certain point at which camera quality stops being a factor? Sometimes a "worse" camera can give a better perception of things being photographed. For example, i simply cannot stand watching brand new tv's with a quality of image that is exceptional. It seems kind of unnatural.

Both of these phones have cameras that are on par with phones from 10 or 15 years ago. It would be nice to see some improvement there. They are both almost unusable for video, because the footage is so shaky.

Would be nice if Palm and/or Unihertz would watch this video to make what we are ultimately needing. For one, I hate that my Jelly 2 isn't waterproof. I need to uograde to Jelly Star however I do HATE its see through design. I also hate the lights on the back. WHY?!!! My Jelly 2 phone is BEAUTIFUL!!! and sexy looking. Looks professional. While the Jelly Star is probably an uograde that I need the dang thing ( online anyway ) looks like something you might get out of a gumball machine. Childlike. Literally I hate that!!! Hopefully it will look much better in real life since my Jelly 2:does need to be replaced. Maybe I'll be able to find a protective cover for it somewhere that hides its childlike looks. SMH :-/. I DO LOVE MY JELLY 2 and will surely/hopefully love my JELLY STAR other than its looks. I need Jelly Star for a newer version of Android. Hopefully next Jelly will be waterproof along with other pluses mentioned about the Palm. Android version is definitely too old in Palm. As in, I would think, not safe/secure from hackers. Going to order my Jelly Stae now. Great video!!! Thanks.

As soon as I got my jelly star I bought a black protective case. It looks more subtle, hides the lights and adds lots of grip. It cost me about $5 from AliExpress.

If you search AliExpress for Jelly Star TPU case you'll see it. It's just a black TPU case.

You could try the Tank mini as it is waterproof, a little bit bigger and is not transparent.

Its so disappointing that small phones have died. That palm phone was so beautiful. The unihertz phones while working ok and more modern specs are just so ugly.

I beg to differ, the jelly star is far more comfy to hold than that cardboard thin android 8 os only phone which can numb my hands

Yes, this is why I bought the jelly star. I've been hoping that the new jelly marks will be thin and made of higher quality materials. But it seems it is going to be chunky like the jelly star.
