in response to your post on youtube, yeah, this kind of content is great! as a new root player, i've been able to try factions that would usually be far too complex by following digital playthrus (such as these) where the player talks through their thought processes. for me, it's much more useful to play a game round-by-round with a video like this as a reference, rather than looking up written strategy guides.

I had considered it but playing random people I don't know, the risk of resigners is pretty high so beat not to grief too much. Play me o. TTS and it's a different conversation 😉 I griefed the Riverfolk by buying for 1 but I don't think they caught it, would you have kept going? I felt like that would have been too much

@@nitrorev I'm a vocal proponent of jailing WA if they give me the chance, but it's mostly because of how much easier it makes the rest of the game when I don't need to worry about outrage or bursts from 12vp

Keep on going ! Clearly one of the best root channel out there with very clear explanations and a nice and quiet tone of voice. The end game puzzle wasn't obvious ! Don't hesitate doing some shorts with clever end game puzzles to solve like in chess :p

If you like endgame puzzles, Waterman121 has a Root channel as well with some excellent puzzles for cats and WA. It was the inspiration for these types of puzzles I want to do and hope to make more in the future.

Thats interesting. I do believe you were the only militant faction in that game! Do you feel that that increases your chances of winning?

Yeah, this is a very favourable matchup for cats. I wanted to show this video because it displayed very precise cat actions and how to burst at the end for a win. It's a stepping stone strategy video. Winning against 1 or 2 other high reach factions is certainly harder but not impossible.

@@nitrorev That is interesting! I'm still pretty much learning the game. Would you say there is any particular advantage to playing a low reach faction? Are high reach factions just better?

@@92ospe11 It's hard to generalize because you have some militant factions that are strong like Eyrie and Lord of the Hundreds and some that are weak like cats. Then there are insurgent factions like WA which are strong because of their scoring but don't have much agency or board control. Strength is more based on consistency than how insurgent they are some factions are just more consistently strong than others but players need to take that into account and treat the factions accordingly. I like to give the cats some leeway if possible while keeping the WA down in the early game because cats are weaker and can help solve problems while WA doesn't help as much with kingslaying but will just race for the finish.

17:00 one of the things I don't like about digital root. Its too easy to figure out who has an ambush. in quick play you should always be asked if you want to pass. I dont know how you'd change this for asynch without making it last way longer. This was a great video! I cant wait to see more!

Agreed, it's one of the consequences of digitally implementing a mechanism that was never meant to be digital.

@@thebuzz567 I would actually be in favour of a fake display that looked the same where it shows that they are "considering options" even though they don't have an ambush hit only show it for a brief moment. This would simulate them having an ambush and deciding quickly that they don't want to use it and it wouldn't disrupt the flow of play too much. This would only be fore live games of course.

I think alot of newer WA players see the power of Revolts being able to raze every building and warrior in a clearing and think that's what they ultimately need to do all the time and it just...doesn't work sadly. At least once you get beyond a certain level of game sense as the other factions to know you should never leave sympathy alone, it doesn't.

Very true. The dramatic effects aren't always the most important ones. There's only 3 bases that can revolt and losing 1 is very detrimental. I started being better with the faction once I started prioritizing sympathy over battles and revolts. Who knew the mechanism that gives you points is the main thing to lean on?

Cats are a very tough faction to play well but one important principal of Root is that actions are king. The more actions you have, the more you can convert resources (whatever that may be) into points. For cats, actions come in the form of bird cards as well as some effects like League of Adventurous Mice (which is better than Command Warren or Cobbler). Anything that allows you to get more cards or different cards like Swap Meet or Charm Offensive will increase your chances at drawing bird cards. Getting yourself into a good position for the endgame is imperative and then using your action advantage to push over the edge is how to find success as cats.

That’s not actually how I thought the last turn would go! I thought you’d buy the bird card, and use them both for Hawks for Hire, then build that sawmill to get up to 25 points, then overwork 3 times on that sawmill using your mouse cards, and then building another sawmill to get 30

Hello, In irl root as the cat can we use a bird card to do an additional action before doing the 3 mandatory actions ? Thanks a lot

Yes, you can spend the bird card before taking the 3 actions in order to avoid losing them to outrage. But you can only spend the bird cards after the crafting phase. It's why Command Warren is not as good as people think if you're against the WA. Sure you have +1 battle action every turn but it must be the first thing you do, before you can spend your bird cards. If you have an extra junk card to give WA instead of the bird card, that's great. Half the time I want to battle the WA token with my extra battle since it's usually a free VP and protects my infrastructure but it would cost my bird card in hand to do so. It's why League of Adventurous Mice is better for cats.
