This clip is about ROOTHY'S MAHINDRA MODIFICATIONS - EXHAUST, SUSPENSION, WATER TANKS, TRAY BOXES and more - and outlines some of the development work that went into building up this Mahindra Pik Up for sustained outback use. So looking for a new dual cab four cylinder I borrowed and drove everything in this market available here in Australia, liked the Mah so much I kept it for a year - then missed it so much I had to get my own. It was a leap of faith maybe, buying something not many Australians knew much about - but I also knew that in India Mahindra is considered their Toyota, only better - they’re everywhere. Time to take the plunge - and maybe put my money where my mouth is.

we need to separate the terms 'catch can' and 'crankcase filter' - catch cans catch oil when your engine pukes, and do no filtering. crankcase filters, as pictured at 0:25 DO however filter the vapors coming from the crankcase vent before going to the intake of the vehicle. too many poor kids getting fancy looking crap catch cans off ebay, which do nothing anyways, great vid and interesting to see the development come along
@bravohotel
@bravohotel Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I've also heard the crankcase filter referred to as an "oil separator". A device with fine mesh which catches the oil as it leaves the crankcase, whereby said oil is than gravity fed to sump. Not sure why Roothy is installing a catch can. Take care of the car and it's really not necessary in my view.

Nice looking setup. Have you considered installing a trundle drawer/table at the rear or does the water tank use up that space? I bought the single cab with pastoral pack, EFS suspension and steel tray. Like you I went with the Gough plastics boxes, two behind the rear axle and two for water in front. I installed a UHF antenna between the cab and headboard on a fold down bracket as well as breathers, brake controller and winch. It has been running great and has handled all of the off-road tracks I've taken it on with ease.

Hey there...looking at Mahindra as a replacement for a BT50 fatally injured by fuel contamination. They are new - to Australia, and the world outside India - and finally we have a genuine Mahindra owned/operated distributorship so I think you'll find things aren't quite like that. However it might take time for that to penetrate your area. Meanwhile with the sheer numbers of them worldwide and the web parts aren't an issue - Bosch ecu, Toyota (Aisin) gearbox, etc etc - worldwide componentry.

With the utmost respect. There’s no way catch cans are a mandatory addition. A well engineered and functional engine, operated as the engineer intended should be fine. Some people certainly have issues, but I don’t personally know a single person who would have benefited by one. Same with additional water separating filters if the OME has a separator.
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY

We'll just have to disagree there - the engineers design engines to pass emissions standards - there is and never has been a reason to feed oil fumes back through a motor. And that is not good. I've seen it in my own 76 where the intake was halved after 70K - when I bought i -and in several other vehicles, usually with 100K or more. Agree on the extra fuel filter with reservations - that being if it's easier to see and drain then it's a benefit. And the TT filter is a much finer one - I like that. At the end of the day I agree with ouy that most problems are maintenance related - and some dealerships are the worst for that.

@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY yeah like I said. I’m certainly not saying hard and fast that catch cans are no good. In some circumstances they may be 💯 necessary. I just don’t think that they are a must for everyone. Those vapours (in theory) should be completely goneskis if working at optimum temps for sufficient times. I’ve had three diesel 4wds… they run at optimum temps 99% of their running life .. no issues with the inlet at all. All my work vehicles are the same, they run all day, rarely doing cold starts and no issues. But different engines are gonna operate differently. I’m just saying that they are not a mandatory addition. I’d personally wait until i saw direct evidence that i needed it, before spending the money. And I’ve heard some engineers say, that PCVs and EGRs are actually relied upon to operate as the intended. I know what they do and why they exist…straight up… my engine runs perfectly with out it.

with grossly over priced toyotas there's starting to be more an more curry cruisers and even chinese 4wd's on the road, plus sponsored or not is the curry cruiser was garbage i seriously doubt Roothy would still have it, he's just never seemed to be the type, plus if the mines are starting to use them then they can't be sh*t

@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Well anyone who buys a new 4WD usually is very keen to get it off-road, you've had yours a while and I haven't seen many trips with it? I'm beginning to suspect that it isn't as capable as you make out? Of course, I don't own one and likely never will, I like older 4WD's so, we're all waiting to see, I guess. The problem I see is that most 4WD manufacturers (USA Excepted) make the trucks for the Aussie environment, Mahindra have just imported an Indian designed truck for the ute market and I reckon that's its issue right there.

Look up John Cadogan, he's burnt more bridges than any other car journalist in the country. He's also an automotive engineer and makes a very cogent argument against catch cans. He would also turn around that accusation and say the endorsement of catch cans comes mostly from ignorance OR people sponsored by the makers of superfluous and gratuitous ad ons for cars. I have a shitbox 2010 zd30 patrol that's never had a catch can, it has over 350 000 Ks on it now and hasn't grenaded. Plenty of people with catch cans have had their motors blow. There is very little evidence that they make a positive difference in modern well designed engines. They might void your warranty however or if you get a shit catch can blow out your oil seals.
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY

I know Cadoges, have done for thirty years - and if you look you'll see his site is paid for indirectly thru new car sales - he's a good operator, but you need to go talk to mechanics to find the problems caused by feeding goop back thru the inlet.
@SpencerHHO
@SpencerHHO Жыл бұрын
@JOHN ROOTH thank you for the reply. I appreciate where you're coming from but my understanding is that it really depends on the vehicle in question and how it's used and what else you've done to it. Certainly a bad catch can is much worse than no catch can as my best friend who runs his own mechanic shop has had a few cars blow their PCR valve from a bad catch can. Most engines have an oil vapour separator on them that works essentially as a catch can that returns the oil to the crank and I've had just asany mechanics advise against catch cans on new engines as those in favour. My old shitbox ZD30 patrol has other mods but no catch can and gunk build up over 300 000Ks has been pretty minimal when I gave it a big clean out and I've seen plenty of blown ZDs with knackered PCR valves with catch cans so I remain unconvinced. It's something I probably would do to an older diesel but I think I'd rather just pay for a deep clean of the intake manifold amd valves every couple of years on a more modern engine. EGR systems have gotten a lot better with newer CRD engines too with less soot clogging shit up which probably mitigates a lot of the problem too.
