Plumerias can be over wintered indoors without any light. They go dormant . Worth a try if you live where winters are colder than modesto

Yea, I have always said, that you dont need soil and fertilizer to sprout seeds, why would we need it to root cuttings and moss is quite easy to sanitize . Easy peasy!

sounds good, just make sure that you keep it warm day and night, this cutting is just now getting ready for potting. i kept it outdoors where nights got down to 60f, indoors it is ready to pot in half the time

I live in Daytona Beach Florida. I started growing plumies about 12 years ago after a hurricane came through and blew down enough trees in my yard that I thought I had enough sun to grow them. Quite successful for the first three years,now no blooms. I have about 14 plants up to almost 6 ' high. I get sporadically a few blooms on my Aztec Gold. Most of the plumerias I have seen in others' yards have not been blooming either.....Lots of healthy leaves though. Too much rain????

Actually, not a heck of a lot of healthy leaves, but the leaves are healthy, no rust, etc. And the few blooms the plants did produce didn't appear until November - When the plants should 'technically' be going dormant.

You can grow in a pot, let soil dry out in fall then store over winter on a porch or plant your trees close to house

Hi Jeff: Love your video. I am in So. Calif. and have been unsuccessfully trying to grow Plumeria for 45 yr. They always die on me. Nevertheless to say I have tried 45 different ways to grow them. I haven't tried the moss rooting way so am eager to try. I recently purchased a stick. It's old grown part looks very dehydrated (wrinkled) and the end is very sunken in, with just about 3" of new growth at the tip. I am obsessed w/being successful. If I get them to grow they never survive past two seasons. Is this a time to try to root or should I just leave the stick till Spring? I've even been successful at sprouting seeds only to have them die off. I currently have two seed starts that are on this there 2nd winter about 24" with the leaves still on. They are inside. I have planted them in clear plastic container so I can watch root development and will not water them again till Sprng. Is this right? Wish me luck and thank you for any additional advice you can give.

Marie, I know one of the most frustrating things is to hear how easy they are to grow and they are, IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE PLANTS NEEDS AND WHY. For instance, in Jeff's video he uses a cutting that looks to be around 24" long. A cutting that long is easier to root than one that's 5" long because the taller/bigger cutting has more energy in it to root. I don't buy any cutting less than 10". Also if you have a longer cutting, if you catch root rot early enough, you can cut, and start over with enough of a healthy cutting to be successful. I find the most important key to growing plumeria is the medium they are grown in and understanding that "wet feet" does not mean they don't like alot of water(remember they are tropical plants) but what it DOES mean is they don't like sitting in stagnet, muddy water. Fast draining soil is key. If they are not lasting 2 seasons that suggest to me that they are getting too much water over the winter. They should only get a drizzle or misting of water if they are showing signs of dehydration during dormancy. Jungle Jacks seem to need more pampering during their dormancy.

Yes it does. On the branch you can see the scars where the leaves fell off. They kinda look like a smile . Make sure the smile is right side up when planting.😃

Advice needed! So, two months ago I planted a plumeria branch that I bought at the airport in Oahu in a well drained pot with potting soil. Yesterday my son accidentally knocked over the pot and I discovered that the branch had not yet rooted, at all! Literally, the flat cut on the bottom of the branch looks the same as two months ago. There's a chance I've been overwatering it, though since the drainage is so good I wonder if that is really the problem or not. I live near Walnut Creek, California, so it's seen plenty of sun and warmth this summer. Any advise on where I should go from here? Maybe let it the branch dry out for a week and then repot it, but be more conservative with water going forward? Thanks for any tips. Such a great souvenir from the Islands if I can actually pull this off!

These can be a booger for beginners! If there is no rot , then I tend to just put them in some fresh damp soil in a warm place. They do prefer soil temps above 80f day and night to root and it can take months. I look at it this way, why water the soil if there are no roots.? New roots will grow into damp soil not soggy soil.

Rule of thumb for plumerias is , "No Leaves no water ",some plumerias do take awhile to root depending on variety, when they do root you'll see what looks like claws , those will eventually turn into leaves.

Hey Jeff. I live on Oahu and found what I think is a plumeria clipping someone dropped. It has 3 branches and it has 2 leaves on one of them. The stem is approx. 5 inches. The bottom of the stem is still slightly moist. Given my excellent conditions with temperature, etc., do I need to use this method - or would I have a high probability of success if I just drop it in a pot with soil and not water for a few weeks? I don’t think the slight moister should be enough for root rot but I’m an amateur here… Should I cut those 2 leaves? Seems like someone left them on purpose. Thanks for your time! Great videos.

Given that you have near perfect conditions, I would just get a well drained potting soil and pot it up, water it lightly once and then don’t water it until it’s completely dry. Btw, I’m currently on Oahu as well visiting family.

Help! A neighbor threw out some dead looking branches from her plumeria tree. I threw one branch in a jar of water and left it for about 2 weeks. Keep in mind that I have a definite brown thumb and have NO idea what I am doing. To my surprise, even though it looked completely dried out, it grew new leaves at the very top, unfortunately, i don't see any roots at the bottom. Hard to say , It sounds like the wood isn’t fully hardened off. They dry out quick if not in firm wooden condition. I’d try keeping in in fresh water and cover with plastic bag to keep the branch from drying out.

All depends on your soil, temps and health of the plant. When healthy, I water mine everyday in summer but stop oct 1 and move potted plumeria in to shade

If you r in FL, you can just stick a cutting in the ground and leave it alone. I know some ppl who leave the cutting to harden off first and some who just take a fresh cutting and stick it in dry ground and don't even water and they just grow. I guess they like the sandy soil here in central and south FL. After they root in the ground and during the wet season (not the dry season when they are dormant) I take a little liquid miracle grow fertilizer mixed in water at half the recommended dose and water with that. They really take off then. That's just what has worked for me. Good luck.

Well I did like and I did subscribe but before you got to the end but anyway after you put it in the bag you taped it up and then what happens you going to put it in a warm spot he said so I'm in Florida but we're having cool days now so I'm thinking about putting it on a heating pad out on my balcony where I just put it down in some dirt with some rooting hormone it hasn't done anything but this is a red one and I've always had the white with the yellow not the yellow but the white and I've been wanting a red One Forever And my daughter's next door neighbor gave me a cutting and I'm really wanting it to do good so I'm going to do the bag thing I have some awesome there and also saw that you can put it down I can put it down in some just are Cactus dirt with paralyte so either one I think or maybe but the he put it in a bottle with that paralyte and he had all kind of roots growing but yeah he said the key was the heat so I'm going to put in on a heating pad and let it get some heat during the day and see if that helps in a little bag like that so thank you very much but yeah tell you should tell on that video what happens after you do what you just did I mean do you see Roots growing I mean how long you said what two weeks it only takes a couple weeks but do you actually start seeing Roots come out into that Moss or you just take it out and check it or what do you do after that it's kind of vague what you actually wait two weeks and then what you take it out and there's Roots there and then you plan it or

I leave them for as long as a year. But if you feel like it has root rot, lift it out and check. Then put back into fresh soil with very good drainage and only water if soil is dry

Just moss.. interesting. thx. I have a plumeria with shriveled & hollowed feel in the trunk but the top 2 branches are still green with no leaves sprouting for over a month or 2. Also, those green branches are at most 2 inches long. Should I leave as is and hope it survives ( getting more hollow more n more) or should I cut just the 2in green branches off and root them ? I didn't know it was in trouble til it wrinkled and getting hollow. thanks.

Hard to say without seeing the plant, but usually shriveled means rot… if thats the case , you may need to start over with a hardy variety such as celandine .

Hi, I need an urgent help😔 To cut the long story short, my plumeria rubra has soft stems (still green, but shrivelling from the bottom up to where the green skin starts) and leaves are drooping. To expand on it: I live in the UK, and had it less than a month. When I first received it, it looked healthy ,but a lot bigger plant than expected (1m x 1m instead of 40cm) in a small pot. In the first few days I noticed a bad smell from its soil, but didn't pay much attention to it. Soon leaves started going yellow and falling off. I blamed myself for wrong watering. 2 weeks ago I started touching the soil before pouring a little water in it (as we had a dry spell) and I only used rain water for it. But nothing worked. I suspect that it has a root rot and its spreading to the stems. What is the best thing to do now? I don't have a lot of experience with tropical plants and now wish I never had it in the first place as it's awful to see it dying. Could you please help?

Hard to say without seeing the plant and knowing exact conditions. IMO , Once rot has set in its pretty hard to stop it. When I was a newbie, I had to throw a lot away. I have had rot in spots where, i uprooted the plant , put in a dry shaded area. After a week or so I replanted it in loose damp soil . And left it alone to recover.

@@TropicalGardenGuy thank you so much for coming back to me! I'm going to have a look at its roots (if any left) and if all dead, would it make sense to try and propagate from a soft stem? I'm confused as I don't understand whether the stem is soft bcs of the root system damage and stem is just dehydrated , OR it's got fungus already inside the stem and it's just going to spread.

Once in the ground how often do i water? I live in east texas and out summers get very hot and humid, should I plant it in direct sunlight or should I allow for shading?

Yes, I’ve seen compost , peat moss , perlite , or even regular potting soil used

Yes, my favorite plumeria is the celedine. Very hardy, I still plant I very well drained soil up against the south side of my house. I only fertilize with low nitrogen fert in spring and stop watering Oct 1

I'm in Fremont, so similar weather patterns to you. I got a cutting just this month in December from a friend. Would a heat mat sweet to 80F and a grow light work for propagating, or should I hang onto the cutting for a while before attempting?

Hi Amy, It depends on the condition of the branch and the health of the mother tree. But If I were to take a cutting from my plumeria at this time of the year, Id keep the branch indoors to callus for a week or two, then put on a heat mat. Be careful that there is material between the heat mat and the cutting as since you wont be watering during the initial rooting process. The part where moss touches the heat mat can get too hot a dry the moss out.
