Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I had a garden disaster yesterday! A whole tray of my beloved tomato starts fell in the floor (well actually I had FND- functional neurologic disorder- and I have tremors and shaking often. So I dropped the tray while moving them outside to acclimate). I actually cried… then I said a prayer and remembered *why* I garden 🪴. I spent months in bed during my initial flare up of FND, and I watched gardening videos to pass the time. So I scooped up my little babies and replanted them ❤ Thank you for all the inspiration!!

Thank you for the inspiration. Ive been sick in bed for 3 days and have already been whining and feeling frustrated. That's over now. If the coughing can stay in check, I'm definitely making it out to the garden today.

Oh no! Lori Beth, I'm so glad to hear that you took a moment to be sad, and then stood up stronger and replanted those tomatoes. The tomatoes should recover, but you definitely recovered, and I'm glad to hear that. Gardening brings you happiness, even when there are hiccups. I pray that your tremors get better, it's placed on my heart something about zinc, and something inside your head near your ear canal possibly on the right side, and 'cleaning', like an ear candle/funnel or soemthing. I pray that lots of growth and happiness funds you! Take care! ❤❤

Hey Jess, Hippie Mama Goose Commune is a good thing. Lots of girls can lay the eggs but not all are broody girls. The future of the flock is secured by sharing vital duties. Me thinks humans could learn from this behavior. They are fierce hippie mamas for sure❣I'm glad your family had a safe joyous adventure. ❤

I grew up in the piedmont of NC. My grandparents had huge gardens. Yes, gardens... they had several large ones in different locations on their property. They never started seed. They would always direct sow and we had plenty of food. We used to joke that they planted enough for all of the family and most of our country. Now, I always start most of mine indoors under grow lights. Sometimes, I struggle with them. I do direct sow beans, cow peas and okra. I really love direct sowing and watching things grown.

I grew up in the Sandhills of NC! My grandparents had gardens but mostly stopped by the time I was old enough to remember, though one side always had tomatoes or strawberries or whatnot, and the other always had Boston ferns and hens and chicks on the porch.

We had a three sisters patch last year, and it was really cool. Everyone who came to visit us was very intrigued. Such a neat effect, visually. We also planted a sunflower in the center of each hill - good thing because the corn stayed so short that the beans really needed the sunflowers for climbing! We're in Florida, so we planted Seminole pumpkins for the squash sister. Ironically, the beans were "Red Stick", and the corn was a variety of Indian, so we truly had a Native American three sisters patch. Lol. Decided to forego it this year because I prefer Bush beans and wanted more room for them, but I'm sure we'll be doing it again.

Hey Jess! A tip for the killdeers, you can deter birds with wind chimes! They will get used to the sound after a while, but you can probably keep them from nesting if you get them into your planting spaces soon! I would imagine just use a shepherds hook if you don’t have a place to hang. Hope this helps!

In the UK there’s a big push to get away from peat in compost because of the harm to the environment, so we’re moving to peat-free, I’ve found most things are fine but my tomatoes and peppers often seem to suffer in it and it can vary even between bags. I’m trying sieved homemade compost and garden soil this year. Just thought I’d mention it in case it’s something similar in the USA 😊🍅

Yes this year was my learning year of the dangers of over fertilizing. My pepper & tomato starts all stunted and completely stopped growing for over a month and turned yellow - nitrogen burn. It was an accident and result of carelessness. But stressed me out almost as much as the plants! Finally out of the weeds-but navigating the solution was a huge learning lesson. We are growing again, and greening again just in time 🌱✌🏼☮️

Jess, I love seeing your garden come to life. Yesterday, for the first time, I sat out in the garage and separated tomato seedlings. I had some older tomato seeds that I started, thinking that the germination would be low. I put about 5 seeds per cell. 12 cells are now 45 German queen plants. 6 San Marzano is now 12. In the past, I would have just thinned them. I'm looking forward to sharing 30 German queens with family and friends. Thanks, Jess, for teaching me new ways to garden. Blessings from upper mid-TN. ❤

Thanks for inviting me over...lol Can't wait to see the garden tour. I love to see your excitement. I have been doing lots of yard work, watching seeds, and loving all the changes that this season brings. God bless
