Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

TIP FOR WATERGLASSING EGGS: Use a flashlight to check for invisible micro fractures. You will be surprised at how many have tiny cracks and are not good to use waterglassing. Hope that helps someone. I used my eggs 1 year after doing them and they were perfectly fine.
@RenePrice
@RenePrice Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this tip!! I waterglassed quite a few of my excess eggs last year and when we went to use them the whites were really watery. I'm wondering if those eggs had those tiny cracks and that is what caused the watery whites. My personal favorite for long term storage is freeze drying the eggs but I know that not everyone has access to a freezer dryer.

@@RenePrice they do start breaking down over time. Weaker yokes, more watery white. But by checking for cracks you wont have a stinky jar with rotten eggs busted in there.

Agreed. A couple channels I follow have gone to mostly 30 to 60 second clip, reportedly because KZbin encouraged it. Takes me longer to pull it up than to watch it, so I usually bypass those. That said, I don't have an hour to watch one vid.

Jess a SHOWER RECESS BASE would make a great wet tray for SEEDLINGS. They are usually fibreglass and come in different sizes. Mounted on a sturdy timber oops LUMBER frame, with legs at working height, and maybe tough wheels so you can move it around if needed. Pull the plug and empty into a bucket or plumb it into a drain. Several of them, unplumbed, would mean you could move them to whatever spot the light is best. Stationary ones with plumbing wouldn’t need the wheels. A shelf underneath for bits and bobs and seedling trays might be handy. X

Your devotional meant so much to me personally this morning as I’m seeking the Lord deeply in what we are to do next. I have seen the hand of God vividly throughout this past year as hardship and disability has brought us down to basics. My daughter who is now 26 has always had this dream to homestead. She is smart and capable and loved working with animals and gardening is a passion of hers. 6 years ago she began to lose abilities and this past year the answers came in a diagnosis of severe connective tissue disease. It rattled our family a bit deeply because she is now using a power wheelchair and she has had to let go of So MANY dreams. Yet, the Lord provided through our community a way to build her a wheelchair accessible apartment on the rear of our old house. I came home to work as her caregiver and help other families also with special needs. So the long and short of it is- the deep desire to homestead is still there. So what is in our hand? We’ve gleaned and made our waiting room a classroom. The Lord is leading and we hope to begin building her a gardening area outside the back door where she can garden from her wheelchair. I’m not sure how we will accomplish it, but we plan to follow the Lord one step at a time. Someday, we would LOVE to hop into our wheelchair van and take a road trip to visit you. You’ve inspired us in the deep times of despair as we grieved what’s been lost but hope for the future. Thank you, Jessica and Miah.

Becky from Acre Homestead frequently has vlogs that last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour, and I love sitting down with my tea and whatever project I'm working on to watch and listen. Same with yours and any other gardeners/ homesteaders I watch - I'm always excited the closer they get to a half hour or longer! After watching this video and you mentioning how you would like to have some type of flood shelf/tray but they were cost prohibitive - I thought what a neat idea. Then I remembered that last week when we had a new heat pump put in, we saved the old one to use the scrap metal - and I remembered that on the trailer of the old unit was a really big galvanized tray thing, so I asked my husband about it. He went an got it for me and took the screws out of the sides. It's about 3 foot by 5 foot with 4 inch sides. I filled the screw holes with silicone. It has a bigger hole for a hose - it was the drip tray for the condenser on the old unit hubby says! When I put it in my greenhouse I will attach the hose from my rain barrel to it so I just have to open the valve on the barrel and water. Right now I have that hole plugged and I'm just pouring water into it -- It works so great!!! I would have never thought about doing this if I hadn't watched your last video!
