My first ship as assistance engineer was a container with a similar engine.MAN V9V 52/55. Those who remark the engine room not to be clean have never been on a merchant ship with an engine like that ...
@XeroVMK8 жыл бұрын
Thats one mighty dirty engine room. The two most important components on the ship is the engine and the radio, yes? So both need to be in perfect order and clean.
@rolomaticz50098 жыл бұрын
+XeroVMK Built in 1977 by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. so it still runs very quiet regardless of the oil smudge on the almost 40 year old paint.

That was an awesome tour of the engine room. Their size is always amazing. Like others I noticed it was a bit filthy especially if its a military ship?? I always thought the military always keeps things standing tall?? I enjoyed the video though thanks. Dave

how hot can it get in there?

That depends on the Ocean temperature. It can be up to 120° or so....How much ventilation also makes a big difference in the temperature....

Well being military and American ship, I am assuming that I would never stand a chance of visiting this engine room especially whilst ship is making way (unless there is some rare exception that I am unaware of). Now, I was going to make query of manufacture of these engines or who is maker of these two diesels?... Never mind! I reviewed watching again and I saw builder's plate. Kawasaki-MAN! I never knew that Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. had joined forces with Maschinenfabrik Augsburg Nürnberg GmbH (MAN) (Today MAN &Turbo SE, Marine Division) for manufacture of marine diesel engines! Which leads me to my next question: age of these engines? Any idea when these two were built? However, who is manufacture of your diesel generator sets? How many aboard ship? Thanks

How does the pitch control work? How is that control transferred to the propeller?
@rolomaticz50098 жыл бұрын
+sc0tte1 Hydraulic fluid is pumped into a center hole through the prop drive main shaft in the same manor as on a aircraft variable pitch prop so the engine HP can be used for speed cruising or towing under heavy load as a sea bound recovery craft to disabled vessels. The reduction gear is a fixed planetary gear and the AC generators are on the front of the crankshaft on a nose drive. There are 2 identical engine rooms in separated compartments at the rear , but you can only see them both at the front as the camera passes by the generator (front of engines) at the start of the video. The variable prop is used in conjunction with both engines to assist in turning like the duel brakes on a farm tractor. This is a 650 foot long roll off cargo ship - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Cape_Rise_%28T-AKR-9678%29
@adamfaid85398 жыл бұрын
+sc0tte1 There is a 'control shaft' that runs down the center of the tailshaft connecting to a quadrant inside the hub which then turns the blades back and forth, the hydrolic mechanism is just a piston that rotates with the tailshaft. look up how controllable pitch propellors work and it will all make sense
