Not saying you're wrong but considering all the build up between Jess and Dean ever since Jess came to town - you have to expect that somewhere along the way it would blow up. Personally, I think it was a long time coming. However I do agree that if dean had just let it go Jess and Rory might have worked things out. That being said you have to kind of appreciate that Dean cared enough about Rory to not let Jess get away with upsetting her. The only problem with that is, Dean was currently in a relationship with Lindsey so that is where I see it going wrong. But we all know that Dean never really got over Rory - That is until the Pool House Party with Logan. Anyways, there's my LENGTHY opinion. lol

Even if he didnt care about her or know her it is super irresponsible or any man or woman not to check in and or try to defend a person you suspect has been either harassed or sexually assaulted
@sarahohana64475 жыл бұрын
I find Jess really inconsiderate in this scene, he knew Rory was still a virgin at the time, and he should, at least, have asked her how she felt. He also probably knew she wanted her first time to be special (not in a hurry at a party). No bad days excuses his behavior, and the fact that he guilted her into entering the room makes me mad. Sharing a room with him didn't mean she was ready to have sex. She was just looking for him and making sure he wasn't too bored at the party. If anything I applaud Dean for being here for her, even if they are not together anymore. He cared for her as a friend.
@merdelune94 жыл бұрын
Sarah Ohana thank you! People always want to ignore Jess’s behavior and Rory’s feelings. People forget that Jess brought everything that was going wrong to himself. Rory wanted to know what was wrong, and instead of telling her, he tries to avoid the conversation by having sex in a stranger’s bed. We see how he treated Shane, and he thought it would be the same with Rory.

@Seven_Leaf4 жыл бұрын
@@merdelune9 With Dean he was really controlling and possessive, which is understandable in certain situations, but Rory didn't have a bunch of "guy friends" she spent tons of time with. Something I had to deal with my first love, and was infinitely more patient and trusting about. With Jess he basically started on everyone's crap list when he moved there so of course he recoiled from those people. Instead of trying to win them over. Skipping isn't smart but again boys will be boys, especially if they have no friends. Walmart is well, at least he did something productive and on his own without having to turn to an uncle that didn't even really want him around to begin with.
@merdelune94 жыл бұрын
@@Seven_Leaf I don't think Dean was neither controlling or possessive. He never said don't spend time with her friends or family; he even spent time with them. He had problems with Tristan and Jess for good reason. Both Jess and Tristan were rude to Dean and he could clearly see they both liked Rory. Isn't he allowed to feel or say anything about the situation? And the time that Dean wanted to spend the day with Rory, he got upset that she cancelled on him twice, not because he wanted to monopolize all her time. He even said that they were apart for a long time, and thought to spend time together. He even apologized later that day for the way he acted. The way I see it, Rory worked very hard at school and barely had time. Dean went to school, worked and played sports, and still tried to spend time with her. So it wasn't like he was with her ALL the time. If anything, Rory was the one who was possessive. When she found out he had an old girlfriend, she was like, "I hate the name Beth." When she found out about Dean and Lindsey, she admits that she wanted him to pine for her. And of course, when she claimed he was her boyfriend first (which, she wasn't) and then said he was "her Dean." Going to school is just as productive such as having a job; teenagers at that age want to have independence, and I understand that. However, Luke gave Jess a place to stay, twice, and gave him a job. All he wanted was from Jess to go to school and not get in trouble. Luke never said he didn't want him there, just Liz suddenly changed his life by sending Jess to him before talking to him. I just don't understand that people say that Jess didn't have anyone, when he had Luke and Rory (she tried to get him to open up). Luke did try to help him the best he could, but the same time people praise Jess for doing things on his own. You can't have it both ways. He did things his own way when he had no other choice.

I never liked Dean but in this particular scene I completely agree with what he did. Rory came out of the bedroom literally crying while Jess followed behind and said, “of course.” Jess then walked away like it was nothing. Dean thought that Rory had just been sexually assaulted (which SHE WAS.) Also, wtf was that with Jess saying, “you came up here on your own.” That was blaming her for saying no. I like Jess but not in the first seasons he was in. Rory continuously said, “Jess wait.” It wasn’t just one time she said no. (Although one time should be enough.) She said it multiple times yet he did not listen. The one time he did listen was when Rory actually had to forcefully push him off. And at the end of the entire thing, Jess walked away like he was the victim. Not okay.

I’m confident that the writers of the show never intended for this to be viewed as assault. The intent was to create a rift between Jess and Rory centered around Jess's inability to communicate or process his own trauma and low self esteem, causing him to lash out at Rory in the ensuing argument and thus be a catalyst for their furthered development as characters. At the time that the show was airing many scenes like this weren't perceived the same way they are now. That doesn't make it right of course but that's just what it is, some things don't age as well because people today are more aware and educated on these subjects. I'm certain that if this show was being made today, the scene in question would have played out quite differently. It seems clear that the writers never intended to have Jess do something that would completely vilify him in the eyes of the fans. It’s really a shame because it causes so many people to completely overlook all of the complex emotions and character work going on here.
@fynnfish Жыл бұрын
Uff thank you so much for this. This was why I was so on the fence about the claim that this scene was SA. If I imagined this as a real life moment where a girl was just too petrified to say anything (which happens) then this would have ended horribly. But at the same time I absolutely can’t imagine Jess to continue without him realizing a minute or so later that what he was doing at the time was wrong. It’s just not in his character not confirming that Rory was okay with the situation. So I believe he wouldn’t have done much more even if she didn’t push him of. BUT he already crossed a border here and he so should have had apologised immediately after stopping. Yet I just can’t imagine him just continuing and ignoring her saying stop once the situation got more spicy. I think the reason is something that a person wrote on the previous video, namely that Jess was looking for connection in that scene. That day was his low point and that’s why he went further than they did up to this point. Which is also the reason why he is taking it so negatively that she rejected him. Him saying „I don’t know what to think anymore“ because he didn’t feel the connection at that time was actually pretty sad. And if Jess continued, he would have quickly realised that he absolutely didn’t establish any closer connection in that moment there. Anyway, I think this is what the writers originally were thinking when they wrote this scene, and they had no awareness that they wrote a SA scene, because Rory also takes no trauma away from the assault. She is only crying because Jess is screaming at her and she didn’t know what she did wrong. Later there is a scene where she tells her mother about what happened that night, but Lorelai is only concerned about the question if the two did it or not, and not really telling her daughter that she should realise that she almost got assaulted that evening. So that’s another hint that the writers didn’t see the situation as SA.
@terryparker9237 Жыл бұрын
He wasn't listening to her, and that wasn't right. It also doesn't seem like he had a threatening intention or demeanor. It doesn't seem like she felt threatened either. It wasn't his best moment, but SA was not so clearly defined 20 years ago. For perspective, there was a time not so long ago that marital SA wasn't considered to be a thing. Society standards change over time.

@@bee__222 there is a lot of fanfiction I found after I rewatched the show and it dives all into this topic waaaay deeper, I was so fascinated by it! A lot of people actually thought about how his life must have been for him to turn out this way, trauma, self preservation etc. it's really interesting to see how a show that doesn't have a lot of heavy/sad drama and which is mostly comedy integrated a character that must have had a pretty depressing past. That's why so many people love him, he is the only character that develops a lot apart from Rory (and maybe Lane) and he is the only one who starts out in a really bad place and is probably the one who ends up best. That's also the reason why many think he is endgame, Dean was only a 2D character, he had no storyline of his own really and no real ambition. I'm currently rewatching the Logan episodes and he is more fleshed out than Dean but god after Jess his character and his relationship with rory feel really really COLD. I'm sorry but I don't know how people can defend Jess for this and say he "didn't force himself on Rory." Then what else does it look like to you? Rory told him to wait (indicating for him to stop) MULTIPLE times and was obviously uncomfortable. He even started unbuckling her pants while she was telling him to wait. The only time he stopped was when she had to physically push Jess off of her. So no, Jess did not stop when he was told. If Jess weren't hot, would you all be able to see that he was forcing himself on her? What if it happened to you? On top of that, he lashed out at her for wanting to stop. That sounds pretty toxic to me. Also I'm not saying what Dean did was completely justified because he has some issues, too, but think about it: what else would he think happened if the girl he used to be in love with and still cared about came out of a room at a party with another guy and she was crying? Wouldn't that seem a little suspicious? So I can understand why he would've been mad at Jess, because if the same thing happened to one of my friends with a guy at a party, I would've been pretty damn mad. Dean has some issues, but in this situation, I can understand why he would start a fight with Jess.

I don't think sexual assault can ever be excused and im so mad at Jess for that scene, it was just so wrong and the fact we fail to mantion this scene a lot of the times is very bad. However, i also feel for him in that time of his life, his life was so fucked up that he just wanted to drown himself and his pain in Rory's love, because she was the bright spot in his not so bright life... and that's just so sad, but also explains how she is the only person he liked or payed attention to and she is the reason he wanted to get his life together sometimes... I don't know Jess is really a complicated person and this was the lowest point for him....
@merdelune94 жыл бұрын
I would agree with you, but to be honest he brought it to himself. Jess came back to town and he convinced Luke to let him stay. Luke’s only condition that he had to graduate; something he could’ve easily do because he claimed to be smarter than anyone else in school. At that time Jess wasn’t going through anything because he was living rent-free, had a car, had a girlfriend, had a job. Then Jess decides to work at Wal-Mart, which is not bad, but he neglected school. And it’s not like he had to pay rent or didn’t have anyone to help him. The principal called him many times, but Jess ignored him until he had no choice but to see him. When Luke finds out he’s might not graduate, he offers Jess a raise and to pay for his insurance, but he’s too proud to accept. So at this point, Jess has no excuse for his behavior.

@@merdelune9 jess grew up feeling the world is against him, he didn't know how to accept help, he was rebelious, which is something i think we can relate to where he grew up, and how he grew up, which we know very little about, by the time he came to town he was massed up, we don't know why... I agree that he handled it badly, and that he made a lot of mistakes, but when someone grows up a certain way, no amount of money or wealth or security can just rid him of it, it something that needs to come from within, and eventually did come to him... I dont think anything can escues his bad actions, but i think tryibg to understand where he was coming for is important, or at least interesting, especially since his evolvement was more impressive than most characters

Also, she probably felt guilty because Jess grew up without his dad, so she let him do whatever he wanted to compensate. Edit: Hello year ago me. So I feel like I need to clear things up cause rereading this comment is making me realize how much my thoughts have changed about this scene. First of all, again, Jess was in the wrong here. But I don’t think I’d go as far as to label it as sexual assault. Let me paint a little picture for ya. Jess just found out that he wasn’t going to graduate (it might have been the day of, but at least in the same week of this scene) and so he is clearly struggling. He and Luke made a deal when he came back from New York that he cannot stay if he doesn’t graduate. Which means he was struggling to figure out what he was going to do, where he was gonna go, and how he was going to tell Rory he was gonna have to leave again. Not to mention that he can’t take her to prom, which she was really excited about, and I know that he felt super bad for letting her down. Just so many thoughts flying through his head. So then he’s at the party, the sad boy that he is, thinking about everything that is stressing him out. Like majorly struggling. Like someone needs to give him a hug kind of struggling. And Jess has a massive fear of confrontation, we all know this, so of course this would translate to his thoughts as well. He wants to get away from his eternal struggle, and how might he do that? boom. sex. like that’s the obvious choice for a 18-yr-old boy. i showed this scene to my friend who has never seen gilmore girls (and made sure to give her all the context) and she agrees with me when i say that it’s not as bad as people make it seem to be. she said something which is just an awesome way to view this moment. she said that sometimes she gets really upset over something, and physically can’t hear what someone else is saying. a common form of disassociation. and that’s what i think happened here. he couldn’t hear or register Rory’s resistance because of all the thoughts in his head. and let’s just make this clear that he did not continue. he did not go all the way! she did not have to do much to get him to stop. (she literally just started sitting up and then he moved away) and i think that’s just really important. he didn’t get violent, he didn’t try to keep doing it after he registered what was going on. and even though he definitely shouldn’t have yelled in response, he wasn’t mad at her, he was just mad at the stuff he couldn’t control. “i don’t know what i think anymore.” his words describe it perfectly. and when rory started walking away, like past year me said, he IMMEDIATELY went to go apologize, saying “you didn’t do anything.” he was clearly apologetic and embarrassed for what had happened. he wanted to go and make amends. he cared. again, i truly believe if stupid dean didn’t get in the way he would’ve apologized and explained everything to rory. So there you go. Jess did not almost rape rory. This is not a Where The Crawdads Sing moment on the beach or a Lessons in Chemistry moment with the pencil. I feel like we gotta make that clear, draw that line. Also I’m keeping my past comment up just because I think it’s important to highlight a change in perspective and opinion. Previous comment: as a 100% team jess fan, I hate this episode so much. This was definitely Jess’ lowest point, and I def don’t condone his actions. Like this was totally sexual assault it makes me sick. I did however appreciate that he immediately regretted what he did and was about to run after her and apologize, but ofc Dean got in the way. If only he got a chance to apologize before Dean went overprotective, they might’ve been able to heal their relationship enough to be end game. But in a different viewpoint I’m kinda glad that he ran away to California. It gave him time to grow up and become a better person. When he comes back he’s matured and the fact he still never got over her after all those years shows how much he cares about her. If we’re talking the characters themselves and not the writers and what they decided to do, i honestly believe this part would’ve never happened. It was just so out of character, and you learn throughout the show how goddamn much Jess cares about Rory, it just doesn’t make sense why he would treat her like that. Like I know he had some stuff going on, and he was still figuring out the world, but that doesn’t mean it made sense. All in all, I’ve forgiven him enough over the series to still be team jess, considering all the good things he did for Rory. Like they truly brought out the best in each other. And he changed a lot after this whole incident, while Rory also changed, but not for the better. Them reuniting and Jess getting her back into Yale, really put perspective on their characters. Like Rory goes down a path that is so rotten, I no longer like her as a character. But Jess, even though he messed up, like big time, and was also not the best communicator as a kid, he matured enough and is now a way better person. Like I love him before this episode, and then I love him even more after, because he recognized the faults he had, and grew from them. If I got to choose what happened in this ep, he would’ve gotten to apologize in this episode. i still think he would’ve gone to cali, because that seems like smth he would do, and considering the fact he’d probably have a lot of self guilt for what he did, even if he did apologize to her. i feel like he would’ve decided she’s better off without him. then he comes back and the rest of that happens, but in my heart she chooses to not sleep with dean and comes with jess to new york. of course after he apologizes again. but that’s not what happens, but i’m team jess anyway cause i like him as a whole. now for all the dean stans in the comments: Dean treated Rory about the same throughout their entire relationship then Jess treated her in this one episode. Dean was wayyyyy to possessive, and literally had no trust in her at all. jess did. when rory decided to be friends with dean again, jess was mad, but he trusted rory, and therefore wasn’t all possessive and angry. dean also got angry over the tiniest things, and blew everything wayyyyy out of proportion. it makes me sick. like i’m genuinely scared of him. and that is sooooooo toxic to be like that to your girlfriend. rory, for basically the whole time she’s with jess, if she slips the tiniest bit she asks “are you mad?” or “please don’t be mad” and jess has to assure her that he isn’t. soooooo toxic, like she felt she had to do that to her boyfriend. she felt like it wasn’t safe to be around anyone of the opposite sex when she was dating dean. it makes me sick, i genuinely hate dean. and when he got the news of how rory broke her hand? go rewatch that and tell me dean is a good guy. i DARE you.

The fact that jess tries to justify his behaviour by implying that Rory coming upstairs to check on her boyfriend (who seemed upset and disappeared) gave him consent to have sex with her... It doesn't matter if he's upset, he effectively made the situation even worse with Rory by letting her down even further and betraying her trust. The nerve to get angry at someone who has expressed they don't want sex when it reaches past the stage of comfort when the consent was never given is kind of sickening tbh. When people say its wrong that Rory went to Dean when they were broken up and he was there with another woman, just look at it from her prospective. She's at a party, where she doesn't really know anyone very well expect her friend and Dean. Rory obviously feels emotional and vulnerable in this moment and Dean is the first person she sees (even if she wanted to go to her friend, she was busy, and disturbing her would have made a scene ik it ended up being a scene anyway lol but Rory couldn't have known it would be like that). She could always rely on him and in this moment things like past boyfriends etc aren't important. Of course she's going to tell him what's going on, she needs someone to confide in. Then it's kind of justifiable that Dean would hit jess, look at it from his perspective. Someone you care for has just come flying down the stairs crying shortly followed by their boyfriend, who you know doesn't have a good reputation. Of course he's going to assume that some kind of assault has taken place, whether it's physical or sexual. In that moment Dean must of been enraged by the idea that something like that could have just happened to Rory. Obviously he's not going to go up to jess and have a civilised conversation with him: asking if he had done anything to her. He knows by now that's not the way jess works, and besides, would you really think talking would solve this situation?? You know anyone in this situation would deny accusations if questioned about it. And you know for a fact something serious must have happened for a reaction like Rorys. I also hate jess' reaction to seeing Rory crying to Dean, as if to say "as soon as something happens with us you go back to him". He has no right to be upset, he shouldn't be seeing Dean as some kind of competition when he has just hurt Rory to this degree. He was ready to walk away as if Rorys loyalty couldn't be trusted when he had just broken hers. His resentment of dean carries on the next day too, even when he had time to think about it he kept his immaturity and failed to see sense. When he mocks the fact that Dean is appearing as a responsible adult it just goes to show that he doesn't think of what he did as a big deal as he focuses more on bitterness then trying to make things right. he should have realised he would get some kind of comeuppance by acting in the way he did. When he saw Rory with Dean all thoughts of making things right with her went away, instead he does what he always does and made a sarcastic comment before leaving. He didn't even try to talk to her. Maybe if he had, Dean would've tried to tell him to back off instead. All of these characters aren't exactly great. Rory has a reputation of being a cheater/ the other woman. Dean also cheats. But at least those situations had consent and weren't forced. This show has a tendacy to annoy me at times because alot of girls grow up watching this show, myself included. Seeing broken and toxic relationships like this doesn't help impressionable teens decide what is best for them in a relationship. It might be clear to adults that jess was in the wrong here, but the amount of toxic relationships and cheating normalises this kind of behaviour and shows these experiences as something to expect. One thing I am glad for though, is when Rory asks what she did wrong as she ran away, and then jess saying to himself that she didn't do anything wrong.
@merdelune93 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything, especially about impressionable teens. I think the worst line in the whole show was when Lane tells Rory, “*EVERY* girl *HAS* to fall for a bad boy. It’s the *RULE*.” What kind of “rule” is this? That is ok to be with a “bad” boy because it’s “exciting” and “unpredictable.” Jess was only nice when he felt like it or it was convenient to him (he was really nice to his dad’s girlfriend). What people fails to see that a guy who treats anyone but you horrible, it is a matter of time until he starts treating you like crap. At the end, Rory even confessed that Jess didn’t her right (4x22) and treated her like dirt (3x20).
@katien3022 Жыл бұрын
You’re pretty spot on. I do think it does a good job of creating realistic characters. They all had flaws, they all failed another person in some way or made major mistakes. That’s just reality. That said, I definitely would be cautious of letting my future daughter watch it until she was old enough and we could discuss all our thoughts on it. Because the downfall and conclusion of Rory’s character in this story is really disappointing and doesn’t send a very positive message to young women. Also, the cheating and relationships the Gilmore girls have are not relationships I desire at all for my daughter and I don’t agree with a lot of Lorelei’s views on sex that she unfortunately passes onto her daughter due to her selfishness and immaturity in relationships.

The writing of Jess was frustrating. When he first arrived in Star's Hollow his defensiveness and lack of trust made sense based on his history, which then got reinforced by the town's negative reaction to his attitude. But it makes no sense that even after dating Rory for months he still refuses to tell her anything- it was like Luke's advice in the boat never happened. It got old watching him lie to her over and over, constantly tell her he wanted to leave X event because it was lame or dorky, reject all sensible attempts to help him by Luke. It was unrealistic that he never moved in that aspect of his development at all or that by this point Rory wouldn't have challenged him more directly on his shutting her out. It just felt like a waste.

I am still team Jess simply because the other alternatives are Dean and Logan who are both cheaters, so no, but she honestly hasn’t had any super great boyfriends. I think a lot more people want to excuse this because they had a character that a lot of people already loved be the one to do it. If Dean hadn’t done anything, he would still be hated for not “caring and defending her.” Dean asked her what was wrong and if she was ok, and she said “yes, no, I don’t know.” He saw she was clearly upset, and Jess just walking by and saying “figures” didn’t help. Jess didn’t even tell Rory sorry or anything, he just left her crying with Dean.

God it’s concerning to see how many people defend Jess here. “He’s a teenage boy.” “He’s going through some stuff.” Bullshit. I don’t care what he’s going through. He was wrong every step of the way. He tried to push Rory to do something she clearly didn’t want. He yelled at her for not doing it. His resolve to apologize for it lasted two seconds because her ex showed concern for her. Dude - your girlfriend is racing out the door crying because of how badly you behaved - get over yourself and apologize even if her ex got to her first. And for everyone who thinks his past explains his behavior - I don’t think it’s good enough. But even if you do, at least acknowledge that a boy like this shouldn’t be in a relationship until he deals with his problems. Because women like Rory are NOT put on this earth to cure angry, toxic, irresponsible men with their love.
@oliviahermes46463 жыл бұрын
This is why I always liked Dean better. He always was so protective of Rory and he never pushed her meanwhile Jess over here trying to get her to lose her V at a party in someone elses bedroom. Dean got so protective over her and here it's not even because he still loves her it's because he's protective of her cause even though he is in love with her she's still his friend and he will always protect her from any bad boyfriends.

So, in this scene i totally agree Jess was in the wrong. He totally forced himself on Rory and it almost turned into SA. But overall, he’s a better boyfriend. Dean is forceful, and they’re relationship was so horrible. He definitely would’ve gotten abusive toward rory. Even in the scene where Jess came over JUST to bring some food to rory, dean got so mad and started shouting at rory.

@Gigi Campione No. Initiating violence is not the sign of good morals. It is an escalation of tensions to something much worse. Jess for not listening right away and communicating, and Dean for picking the fight. This was a horrible moment for Jess, but ppl acting like he was going to attack her are crazy. I’d like to emphasize this is a fictional world that I’m talking about so we are told information through other characters and subliminals and this no way is what I’m about to say equate to anything similar in real life! So - Rory does want to be intimate with Jess at this point. We know this because she talks about it with her mother, of course this doesn’t mean she is ready to go through with it whenever now. Rory wants it to go a certain way and she tells him to slow down here - which he doesn’t listen to because he’s panicking of losing everything and thinks this is his last chance. Rory gets angry at this point because she thinks he just wants to get it over with and pushes him off her. She doesn’t run away or appear scared which tells us she wasn’t fearful that he was going to hurt her but instead she was angry that he wasn’t taking her first time seriously. This is highlighted by her asking him if he really thought it was going to happen here? At that point she is not upset. What upsets her is that he starts to get upset with her himself because she is angry at him for assuming they were going to be intimate. That is when she starts crying. None of the story indicates he assaulted her because when she tells Lorelei about it she also doesn’t word it that way or else Lorelei would have done something about it for how protective she is about her daughter. I’m not saying he wasn’t an a hole in this situation because he very much was but people are stretching it by calling him a rapist. Is Dean an abuser then? Is Logan a controlling narcissist? Like cmon.
