As an ardent Celtic fan of a certain vintage (I was 7 when we won the EC in ‘67😉), I was intrigued by the discussion. I get all the points made - e.g., I’m not sectarian but I still like no result more than us beating Rangers, and I know the football is not up to CL or even EPL standards - and of course Celtic is a huge fish stuck in a small pond. But the bit that interests me most about the discussion is the inference that anyone (incl todays youngsters) could only really be interested in a team that’s playing the best standard of football possible. Surely that’s a very shallow measure of a person’s sporting loves/persona? Wouldn’t that criterion rule out anyone from supporting a League of Ireland team? And it shouldn’t, of course! I support Celtic for family background reasons, the rich Celtic history reasons, a shared sporting love with my son (who’s otherwise Man U to my Leeds!!😳😖), Henrik Larson of course -and a myriad of other reasons that I cherish deeply. So I’d find it impossible to subscribe to a notion that something like supporting Celtic could be ‘irrelevant’ by dint of the football not being top drawer - it’d be a bit like someone only loving the son or daughter who earns the most money! So, I’m staying in Paradise 😉🍀⚽️

There is an agenda at OTB driven by the neo liberal outlook. Ireland is full of Celtic fans, I see kids all the time wearing the hoops. OTB trying to be controversial.

Great points made. Any football support can be described as irrelevant, it's just a game after all. For the cast majority of people, beyond brief emotions, it doesn't impact your life. The best quality thing is subjective. I find Guardiolas teams tedious to watch, but I'm in the minority there. I understand the game plan, it's very clever and almost chess like. But it's still not entertaining to watch. Entertainment can be found many ways, most people are enthralled in a game that their team plays in regardless of the perceived quality. Something that media doesn't cover is that football is ruined. Genuinely big clubs across Europe (and the world for that matter) have been left behind for smaller clubs in bigger leagues propped up by tv deals and foreign investment. Then there is the issue of foreign states pumping money in to clubs that propels them to success (Chelsea, Man City, PSG etc). For any true football fan, these clubs are now dead and have been replaced by money pumped zombies. Their success isn't their success, it's their owners. How fans morals (Which every fan group like to think they are superior in some way) vanish when some success is dangled in front of them. Football is summed up by the Champions League. Less than half of the clubs are actually champions and the league part of the competition is intended to give the bigger clubs a better chance of making the later stages. They want to reduce the chance of upsets wherever possible, thats why there are seeding and pots for the draws. Such is the state of modern football, I'm in a tiny minority that would rather watch the champions of Romania v the champions of Portugal than watch the 3rd place team in Italy against the 4th placed team in England. The pomp and glitter sprinkled on a lot of the bigger leagues makes a lot of people overlook just how poor the games are. How many people honestly like watching a "Super Sunday" drab 1-1 draw between Southampton and West Ham? I'd genuinely rather watch a local amatuer side. Bournemouth have made 20 signings for 10million euros or more, their record signing is over 30 million euros. Rangers record signing is 12million pounds and celtics is 9million. Both of those clubs are 10 times bigger than Bournemouth (If not more). I'd quite confidently say that in Scotland alone Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee United and St Mirren are all bigger clubs than Bournemouth. But as I said, TV deals and foreign investment has inflated smaller clubs way beyond where they should really stand. Clubs like Celtic have been left behind. Football has gone too far down the road now that they wont ever catch up to even the second or third tier teams in europe. That's until european competition and the bigger leagues split apart, the super league looks like it will happen regardless of whatever uefa say.

One rule to fix Gaelic Football - Both teams must keep at least 5 players in either half of the field, the remaining 5 players are free to roam the whole pitch. You can track this with fairly crude GPS technology, the likes of which players already carry. If a player strays outside of their zone, it results in an automatic turnover for attacking teams, or a 20 meter free against you for defending teams.

It's hard not to think that Rory's habit of playing safe at majors is directly related to his admiration and relationship with Tiger Woods. He looks up to Tiger so much, that he thinks Tiger's ruthlessly efficient way of winning golf tournaments is the "right" way and therefore attempts to emulate that style, when really he's more suited to playing golf in the way Phil Mickelson does.

I wish Rory would shut the hell up in the lead up to the masters and just focus on his game. By talking his game up, he just dials up the pressure and expectations on himself. People forget his game has been poor overall the last few months apart from the WGC matchplay. One swallow does not make a spring. Maybe he should be honest and admit he has a problem with the Masters to lessen the pressure.

Incredible shallowness shown by the people on this show re Celtic FC and football in general. Part of the reason why Celtics' support (visible) has reduced over the years is because of the likes of presenters like these fawning over the circus that is the English league. Football clubs aren't (weren't) about circus, celebrity, over paid and pampered footballers managers and agents with egos to match. It is about soul, community, history and ethos. Its obvious that the media in this country are more inclined to pay homage to the former as it suits their masters. The fact that they can point to a league that provides such riveting entertainment and spectactle such as Crystal Palace v Brighton goes to show you the level of laziness and irrelevance demonstrated by these people. With respect to one commentators reference to the relationship between Celtic and Rangers and his refusal to become interested in it he probably needs to understand football history and perhaps educate himself on football club rivalry throughout the global football world as opposed to his homogenised version. Think James Mc Cleans treatment in football grounds throughout England. Try looking at Corinthians Palmeiras Boca River Plate Galatasary Ferhnabace Ajax Feyenoord to name but a few and consider the relationship between the fans of these clubs and the ongoing relationship between them. Finally consider treating football not as an exclusive English phenomena but as The world game, which it is.

great comment - in terms of dwindling Irish support base, if you go to any of the ports (be that air or ferry) on the morning of a celtic game, you can be sure that they will be full of fans travelling across and in general i would say without hesitation that there is a larger travelling support across to those games than any single EPL team (i.e there would be more Irish Celtic fans attending games than there would be Irish Liverpool fans). In terms of dwindling 'quality' you could argue that or you could simply say that the funds have been pumped into the other big leagues around Europe with England eclipsing all leagues in terms of spending power. P.s Rangers werent relegated.

The only proper global football radio programme I know of is the BBC 5 Live World Football Phone In which takes place at 2 in the morning on a Monday night! To be honest it's a hell of alot more entertaining than wall to wall coverage of Todd Boehly nonsense or Graham Potter's next move

The expectations for Rory are ridiculous. He's literally the most successful player of his generation. Other top players have fewer majors and much fewer tour wins yet Rory gets bashed when he doesn't win the masters. His major performance has been dissapointing admittedly but it seems the bashing comes from people who don't understand the difficulty of golf and peaking at the right times. Rory was in poor form coming into this and only showed a glimmer of form in a matchplay tournament. Not enough to make anyone feel confident in his chances. I'd be confident he can contend at the pga or open this year if he is playing well. We take Rory for granted and especially his successes which people just write off as they are not majors. But still he has the best career of anyone of his age group and only Phil and Tiger have better from last 25 years. Think he deserves a lot more praise than we give him in this country

I'd be wary of the hype around Carsley. Managing under 21s with the talent he has at his disposal for England, doesn't mean much. We had all this with Stephen Kenny, they hyped him up to be the next big thing.

Really interesting observation on Rory playing more his own style at Augusta. Maybe he still needs to learn how to win there, for himself. Im sure he has gotten lots advice over the years and you wonder if thats what hes listening to when hes midswing. Its entirely possible that he can...and entirely possible that he cant. What about Shanes approach on Sunday on the 15th. Did that cost him a top 12 finish and automatic qualification to next year...or was that what he was trying to gain ...or just the experience of going for it ?
