You heard right, it's what contributed to his early demise with post operative staph infection.

While some of what you said certainly contributed to the loss of finish on the guitbox the majority was because Rory had highly elevated acidity in his sweat due to an undiagnosed kidney problem.This is what eventually killed Rory way before his time
