Matt Cameron’s drum parts are so incredibly creative. I know he’s jazz influenced and I can hear it in his approach to playing grooves within rock. I think all the best rock drummers come from a jazz background or at least have a working knowledge of it.

Soundgarden were the sum of their parts more than any of the other bands of the 90’s in my opinion. They all contributed musically and drew from eclectic influences.

Great reaction. The "Grunge" sound mixed together elements of punk, metal, classic rock as well as some bits of pop, and funk. It was born out of the excess of the glossy 80's pop-metal, and stripped everything back, and it really resonated with people. Being in Seattle during this time, Soundgarden was definitely the top dog in the scene. AIC started out more as metal, and Pearl Jam came a bit later (first starting as Mother Love Bone). Nirvana was last to join the scene, but was immediately elevated with their catchy, and intense songs. Soundgarden finally hit it big in 1994 with Superunknown, though BadMotorfinger is excellent.

*Rory.* Thanks 🙂 This was their show opener for years. The spoken intro bit is based on a broken See & Say toy they saw at a friend’s house. You’ll notice a key change here (from the See & Say bit into the proper tune)... And also there's a difference btwn the recording and the live performance you saw. Here the drone intro part is in D … and then they modulate almost weirdly into B for the tune itself. When they did the song live, they decided to keep the whole song in D. Great call out on the 'slow punk' element. 👍 The signature Cornell stompfest comes to mind every time I hear this 😄 Love the Eastern influence in this tune, and in others, too... (Kim's doing, probably). Leagues beyond their peers, in my opinion. And Chris has to be among the best melody writers of all time. ♥️✌️

CBGB's used to have a record store next door: The Canteen. Soundgarden played an early gig there and they were so loud the records were jumping out of their racks because of the sound waves. generated.

People talk about his greatest vocal performance?.. This is it.. And I’m not just saying that because I’m bi-polar and blind in my right eye..
