There was such a great run (outside of the more radio-played R&B scene, and fair point plenty of great artists there) of female fronted (and some all female) bands in the early/mid 90's alt/rock surge - Garbage, Luscious Jackson, The Breeders, The Cranberries, etc - with some diving into more specific sub-genres as well, like Portishead (Trip Hop), Hole (Grunge) and Jewel(rock/folk). But Portishead IMO is hard to argue as the baddest of the bunch! Peace/
