I second this recommendation. I bought the bootleg "2nd Club That Night" when I was 16yo in Toronto, it literally is Prince at his peak performance. A 30yo global superstar playing in front of a few hundred people just transcending his instrument. Just him and God.

That final guitar solo is a gut punch. Don't know why but it is. I think the thing about Prince is that he played notes, rhythms and melodies that just resonate with your soul. Just a lot of beauty there.

I'm glad you enjoyed this performance. FYI- Prince is the only artist that I'm aware of that was on the cover of Bass Player, Guitar Player, and Modern Drummer at the same time back in 2004. My next suggestion for you is of course another Prince live performance from 1994-95 at his Miami club called The Glam Slam. He and his band the New Power Generation played one of my favorite Santana Jams called Jungle Strut. You can check it out with the search Prince Jungle Strut. This what really made me fall in love with his guitar playing back then.

Having witnessed Prince play the guitar covering Sly, Santana, and Hendrix as tributes to them covering their songs as each one would have played the guitar. Prince's guitar playing as them was identical-you would have thought all those 3 musicians were performing their own songs on stage.

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar Normally Prince does, but in my case; the choice was a tribute to the greats and how those greats performed their songs in their way. Prince was verbally telling us a story about them and how they related to his love of music to which he then went into their songs. BTW Santana is Prince's big influence on how he plays(picking wise) guitar (according to Prince).

The look at 9:36 said 1,000 words! I had to giggle as I knew we had another barnstormer of a solo coming up...the headshake at 13:06 said it all. What makes his guitar playing the best for me - and I'm finding you're causing me to analyse it more now - is that he has all these abilities in his toolbox but it is his 1) his choice of which to use and 2) his proficiency in using them. These are live performances. Yes, they're rehearsed but I can guarantee you that solo is unique to that moment. That he is able to get into the zone and let the creation be born on the fly, that's what makes him the GOAT for me. 40 year career, played like that out of the gate - check out I'm Yours and Bambi. And the fact he did so much else is just icing and a cherry on top.

He can’t help but make it his own. He once said if he listens to a song he begins to rearrange it in his head. He once said while cleaning his teeth, sometimes a beat starts up and he has to get to his studio downstairs to record it. Producing music 24/7 he needed to live in his own place where he could record anytime. Duane Tudahl books on time sheets for his recording session at Sunset Sound in LA, before Paisley Park was built, will amaze you at the work ethic and the amount of music produced, where he did it all and only used an engineer to set up. I may have told you that already …

Dude!! VERY Underrated... So many good guitar parts "hidden" within many of his songs. To me what puts him vry high on the list of great players is his musical IQ. i never hear useless, flashy playing. It all seems so deliberate and perfect for the part. He did like 21 shows in london or something that was just a trio. I've heard the guitar playing is WAY off the charts. i hope videos surface.

It is such a classic song. Hard to believe the Hollies sued Radiohead over that song. I don't see it (and speaking as an educated musician) Sadly, extortion exists for bands that are making money ie: "We are going to sue you over this, it's easier for you to pay us than to hire legal representation and go to court.." It happens all the time. Now sometimes legal action is necessary, but I don't think so in that situation.

There’s something about the feeling it gives me. It’s the one thing you missed out on. Actually seeing him live. I’m not exaggerating when I say it lifts your soul. Great post Eric. I think having been a guitar "purist" in the past, and I've spent a lot of time recently thinking about this, is that he didn't get much exposure back in the day in the guitar media (I don't recall any articles on him in any of the big guitar magazines back in the late 80's or early 90's) and I think many of us associated him more with the frontman/dancing kind of thing like in "Thieves in the Temple" etc... I remember for sure that he did play guitar, I remember hearing Purple Rain on the radio. This is a great topic that I might do a video on actually to talk more about.

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar Your point about him being perceived as a dancing front man is spot on. Robert Cray was getting guitar magazine features/covers and he's not half the guitarist Prince is. I remember when Living Colour came out, Vernon Reid got anointed as the Great Black guitar player ! Lol ! Prince never packaged himself as 100% guitar player. Prince didn't restrict himself to one genre, so fans in those genres didn't feel like he belonged in their genre.

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar I have a suggestion but it's not his guitar playing. PLEASE listen to Prince's A Beautiful Night. You will see just how tight his band was and also get a special treat. Prince throws down on the drums. And it shows how you have to be an entertainer on stage. Not just play an instrument just like you say.

Another very enjoyable reaction video. Liked the bit of playing at the beginning and that you went discussed the alternate picking, chord progressions, etc. Anyone can just say something sounds good. Outline why something sounds good is a nice touch. I assume You've been inundated with requests for Prince's Superbowl half time performance. Especially considering the Superbowl just happened. That is my vote for your next Prince related reaction.

Hello really pleased you enjoyed this video. There’s an official version of this performance but the video and sound are poor. Being a Prince lover since 84 - I had the full Coachella show audience filmed and a very rare soundboard recording and put them together. It’s become a classic which I didn’t expect I was jus uploading it coz I love the performance and the official video doesn’t capture the power of it. Love your channel thanx for watching our content.

LOL this is the most understated Canadian reaction video ever looool. despite how muted your reaction was, I understood your respect. the Rock N' Roll hall of fame performance he did was also insane, and if you google and read the back story on it its an amazing story. if you google Prince and theories about why he was never recognized as a great guitarist, some interesting reads there also.

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar I’m 60 and my mind still lives in “back in the day”. I had a BF-2 flanger, and I learned to get excellent chorus and phaser sounds out of it because I was too cheap to buy a CE-2. Did you use gaffa tape to stick your pedals to the stage? I did that through most of the 80s.

Here's the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ6TZKqngb5mhMU I'm curious what you'd make of it. It is a long extended solo but I wonder if the techniques differ much. The song we're all pointing you to is Motherless Child at 8:35 on this video. Richie Havens is probably the most famous version of this old spiritual song. The lyrics Prince uses and the intro he speaks to is true to his own life... For all the glamour and androgyny, his life was a rags to riches. He really did come from a broken home and made himself into an alien through his talent and work ethic.
