The Prince version wasn't so much a cover but an adaptation! Radiohead's song was about self loathing and I can get that from Nirvana! I've only heard bits of Radiohead songs at parties but I prefer bands like Nirvana and Portishead, who may have been influenced by Radiohead for all I know but RH just doesn't grab me! On the other hand, Prince seems to be singing about the disintegration of a relationship and we've all been there more times than we're comfortable with! I prefer the Prince!

Both versions are great. A great song period. Nobody measures up to Prince though when it comes to performing and that includes singing, playing, and the theatrical aspect as well. The second he lets the wild out with Mozart like precision all you can do is tip your hat. He could have actually been a real creep if it wasn’t for all that talent that was given to him. I believe he was actually suffering out there on stage. You can tell he is in pain as he walks. He is limping. Love him to death.

I came here from the Prince “Play the funky music” video y’all did. I actually haven’t watched that one yet. I got to the two minute mark when y’all mentioned this reaction. I paused and jumped on here right away. My take on the two versions: Radiohead’s version is so raw. Throm’s voice sounds like it’s being ripped right out of his throat. The emotional anguish is in your face every time you hear the song. Couple his voice with the dynamics of the instruments and you can feel his pain in every gut wrenching word. Prince’s version is just that…it’s his. That’s not to say there’s no comparison. The words no longer matter; but that doesn’t make his version emotionless. Prince has the ability to create so many emotions with not just his guitar, but with his entire band. Prince’s cover is more passionate. It’s also raw, but in a completely different way. The music envelopes us as listeners while it cradles our souls.

I don't like to put one version against the other. I'd rather judge rather or not Prince did the song justice? The answer is Hell Yes he did. You can't beat an original song done with so much soul and feeling! Prince had a weapon that he would use to bring many a song to its knees! That damn guitar! I'm a boomer who lives in the Twin Cites. I miss Prince's first concert because my parents wouldn't let me go to North Minneapolis on the bus at night! I made it a point to see every other concert from that point on. Probably over 40 times! I can say that nothing got us more excited then when he picked up the guitar or sat behind the piano! His guitar playing is what takes this song to another level...on another note have you heard people trying to cover Prince's music? Let's just say don't! It may seem like a good idea at the time but just don't...Please and Thank you!

Radiohead can play their song like Radiohead and it will be fantastic... Prince would/could and did play any song, make it his own and be phenomenal. This is a really difficult choice - kind of comparing apples and oranges. I think both are fantastic. The Radiohead original is very emotional, but Prince is exceptional. I'd probably couldn't choose unless I was having a purple day. Can I suggest for original v cover (and also a guilty pleasure) Light My Fire - The Doors v Shirley Bassey. Classy James Bond-esque cover, arranged by the wonderful Johnny Harris. I also love both versions of Walk On By from Isaac Hayes and The Stranglers. Love your sponsor clips. I love Prince and this version is amazing. He really has done the song proud. But I still prefer the Radiohead version because it has the emotion and vulnerability that is core to the meaning of the song. Prince is a virtuosso, but this song doesn't really need that, it needs people to identify with the feeling. I keep thinking about Nothing Compares to You and listening to the Prince version (of a song he wrote). It's good, but Sinead O'Connor does a version with emotion.

When someone makes a cover version their own, they have to do something really extraordinary to take it over. A radical change in arrangement or interpretation, introducing different instruments, etc in order to take it over. I mean Prince does a nice job and all but doesn't take ownership, no matter how good his guitar playing was. This song belongs to Radiohead.

Not taking anything from Prince ... he's an awesome artist in his own right and a legendary guitarist ... but how anyone can say his version of this song is better than Radiohead's is beyond belief ... sure he does a great job ... but especially since he turns the song round to be about someone else ... he kind of misses the whole point of the song ... he doesn't even come close to capturing the raw power of the personally experienced emotions, and the self deprecating feelings of teenage angst and self loathing embodied by Thom Yorke and Radiohead's original.

you may not buy it,because of an idea of Prince' image?...too flamboyant?...so it is not "real" when it is just more sophisticated on more levels.. many of the rock audience have a bit of a problem with taking Prince serious..for them plainness equals honesty...but that's an idea born out of custom and it has more to do with the categorisations of the people... understandable..we,the average people get easier confused by a singularity...everyday life is more relateable... but when it comes to art there may be a distinction between insencere artificiality and a broader effort in expression(truthful art)......^^ you want "different" and challenges- or familiarity?...that may be the question...not "realness".. maybe? ;)

@@saschaD02 lol, no, its got absolutely nothing to do with image and flamboyance. If I were to listen to both of these versions audio only, without visuals, or more importantly, without knowing Prince, I'm 100% sure i would feel the same. Its the delivery, Princes version sounds like a quickly arranged cover sung by a man too old to deliver the feeling/message of the track so trys too hard to compensate for that. Thom Yorke has a tremendous voice but you can hear the cracks in pitch/tone purely because emotion has taken over the delivery of his voice, in that moment he does not care if he's pitch perfect or in key, he's simply lost in the words he wrote to express his feelings and he's gonna/has to get it out. Thom Yorke sounds like he HAS to sing this song. Prince just sounds like he wants to sing this song. BTW I quite like Prince ;)

@@TheThamesmen Not much of drinker anymore. Tito's on the rocks now and then and communion wine. Good thing I've got plenty of Heroin. Just kidding. No need for the DEA to show up and beat me about the kidneys with batons, causing me to piss blood for weeks, all the time yelling "confess"!!!! Although I had a similar experience in Spain in the late 70's. Can't talk about that. In fact, ignore everything.

I guess when you’re in love with yourself, as much as Prince was, you can’t bring yourself to sing “I’m a creep”. That’s probably why he switched the perspective and missed the whole point.

Hi No Alarms... I actually took it that he went completely religious and starts putting religious filters on his work, I think that's why he didn't swear. Who knows.

@@noalarms4618 🕊🧖🏽‍♂️🕊Prince’s version is about not knowing who you’re actually dealing with. Just because someone looks nice and says all the right things doesn’t mean that inside that person isn’t a creep. The original is very straight forward, there’s no doubt about it that the young man in that song is a “ Creep “. Prince at times writes songs that don’t easily lay everything to bear for you. He wants you to think for yourself. For example: he sings...🎼Maybe I’m Just A.....🎵? It’s up to you to figure it out and not simply hope for the best. I love them both, for what they are, but I do listen to Prince’s interpretation of Radiohead’s wonderful song more often than I do the original. Prince’s take is more the thinking persons version. More to take in lyrically, plus those out of this world solos. But thank you Radiohead for creating the basics of the song.🕊🧖🏽‍♂️🕊

@@purpleflowers699 The original is not about a “creep”, its’s about a lack of confidence, low self-esteem. As for Prince, he clearly switches the perceptive onto another, thus ruling himself out of the “creep” label. That is unless he’s singing to a mirror, a perceptive, I suspect, most of his love songs come from.

@@noalarms4618 🕊🧖🏽‍♂️🕊There have been plenty of assumptions about what Prince exactly is saying in some of his songs. What I stated earlier is only one of many. Another is the religious interpretation which Prince has used often in many of his songs. Many. Some believe this is a discussion with Satan. Another example: 🎵You Wish U Were Special, So Do I...🎼 You’d have to know a lot more about the scripture to understand exactly what that is saying. You’re assumption that Prince could be saying this to his own reflection, may also be the case, because Prince has wrote about his own insecurities in many songs as well. You do know don’t you that just because someone pays themselves a complement doesn’t mean that deep down they really believe it. Prince often shared his insecurities about his height...which most people know. Not as many know about his shyness, that almost led to the end of his career. See, you can’t tell a book by it’s cover. But people do have a right to be proud of the gift of their talent or in Prince’s case talents. You have to pump up your self-esteem to be able to go out on that stage as often as he did, and deliver the incredible shows that he is world renowned for. Another incredible song of Prince’s, “ 7 “, has started many discussions about the real meaning that Prince conveys through the lyrics. What can make it difficult is that there may be more than just one meaning in a Prince song. That’s why, once again, Prince more often than not is the thinking persons lyricist. For those who’ve only heard a handful of Prince’s songs, it’s not at all surprising that a lack of knowledge in what he’s trying to convey doesn’t come as easy to some as it does to others.🖤✍🏽🖤

Dear Isis-men....breathtaking eh, Prince absolutely shredding the blues, all that dirt and bends....and those runs...dayymn. And so deliberately, outrageously LOUD in the mix just makes it better...and the swings and swipes and reloads....supremely tight but absolutely loose. No doubt you've checked the RNRHOF by now too ;)
