I had to jump several hurdles to make this dove fly again. But, it was worth it. The sound is really fine.

Guitar repair extraordinare! Will it fly again? I'll fly away o Lord; I'll fly away! You're worlds apart (Australia) but in the same "league" with Olaf the Violin Maker. Talk about "hoitie toitie", he says he's not a luthier but a violin maker; lol! But! His repairs are often invisible; I never seen nothin like it; incredible! Gets his palette out; mixes the yellow and brown; freakin invisible when he puts "his" (formula) varnish on it after staining it! Perfection achieved on/with Marty Robbins' style! It could not be better...

Very nice repair, got a 74 Guild F-50 from my friend when I worked in his shop, belly bulge & bridge coming off, re-glue & press it it back flat, I could have never done a job like this one, mine was easy, your a real talent. Keep picking.

I learn so much from watching your videos! Last night I replaced the saddle and nut on my new guitar, from new bone, or some such man made material, to real bone. It takes forever, well it felt like forever, to sand bone by hand with a nail file! Lol But the sound makes every minute of sanding worth while! The intonation is spot on, on every string except the low E. It's about - 18 cents. I'm still trying to figure out how to fix that... All in all, not too bad for a soon to be 72 year old woman! Lol Thank you, Jerry, for your videos, the way you explain things and thusly giving me the knowledge and courage to do things like this. I enjoy the process and ultimately the result! Plus, I very much like your singing and playing!

I seen a dove in my local music shop in 1981 and and it was £1300 and im sure it was advertised as the affordable gibson acoustic..... I was shocked as I'd never took much notice of acoustic guitars and the strat I wanted was £999 I think. Didn't see many in the uk.

I flatten the pickguard on my J200 by placing it in a cooking sheet (about 2inchs deep) in hot water. Then I got a pot the size of the guard full of hot water aswell and placed it on top. Sandwiching it. After 3 hours it was flat as can be. The pickguard was the old vintage thick 2mm ones. And I had it in wax paper to avoid scratches. Worked like a charm

172 views, & only 16 likes. Doesn't make sense. Jerry what you said about squeezing all the glue out. Then you said maybe with metal. I can assure you, that it doesn't matter how tight the metal is there's plenty of sealant there. I know 1st hand. At Lockheed we had to seal almost every part we installed. Then before we riveted it, or put in the fasteners, we used clikos that had to be screwed down (They had a hex nut, with a threaded shaft, that spread the tips, to hold the part/piece/whatever. We had a gun to install them, & used the same gun to remove them. We a strap that was about 2' long, about 4" wide with a T on the end that probably around 7" long & 4" wide. It joined a huge frame together.(C5B are huge aircraft. It's millions of little parts, riveted together WITH SEALANT, to make bigger parts.) Turns out the strap in question had to be removed, can't remember the reason. Well me & A couple of old heads were chosen to remove the strap. Rush job of course. Well we drilled off the rivet heads, knocked out the fasteners, & rivets. The strap DID NOT MOVE. The sealant held it just as tight with out the fasteners, as with the fasteners. We ended up getting a pretty big putty knife, putting a razor edge on it, & slowly tapped it between the strap, & upper & lower part of the frame. Talk about slow work. It took us about 2 hours to finally CUT the sealant & remove the strap. I don't know if it's true, but I heard Lockheed took a 141 removed all the rivets & fasteners, & flew it, no problem.(after trying to remove that strap, I believe it!!!) They told us, if we left our layout lines we made with blue water soluable markers, the lines alone would add an unbelievable amount of weight, due to the shear size of those planes. LOL a lead man I had, said (When I told him we only had the longer length of fastener, instead of the right one. Maybe 1/32" too long) "Put washers on them, you know that." I said they were always complaining about weight. He said "Big fella, if you look at the size of this plane, a couple hundred pounds of washers, won't make much difference." So I added washers to the 75 fasteners I had to install. LoL

An hour before the customer is due you start fixing one of your tools for the next step in getting the guitar ready. When you said there was only 15 minutes left before the customer was due you did a whole lot of work that seemed like it must have taken more than 15 minutes. Hi Jerry; Helicoil uses their own size thread to fit the thread that they have on the inside. They provide a special tap with the Helicoils. That, however; leaves guys like us in the learch, as we don't have the tap when we need it and to get one, we have to buy some more of the Helicoils. I do believe you have struck upon the right answer to fix the lock screw.

heli coils are a good way to repair striped holes but not so good for a bolt that gets moved a lot

Jerry as a retired Mechanic of 79 years old I know Helicoi work fine in a situation where you have a solid bottom in the hole for them to lock into but in that situation where you used it It WIL NOT lock in because the screw is going all the way thru the helicoil and the end result will always be just what you experienced and what you did by just rethreading the hole and going to a larger screw was the correct thing to do in your case. I know this from experience.

I use t cut for metalics and pearlescent finishes. It is much more gentle than the standard stuff and it really does restore the finish on most guitars that come through my workshop.

Great job! It looks and sounds beautiful. I don't know why Gibson did so many goofy things with saddles on their acoustic guitars (other than Norlin being cheap), such as adjustable metal inserts, and that ridiculous plastic insert. Those devices can do nothing except hurt the sound, IMO.

Regarding the little router; I'm sure the intent of the heli-coils was to prevent overly tightening the steel screw in the aluminum body and stripping out the aluminum threads. The heli-coil could have given better service if it had been secured with Loctite though. The router base is a very nice piece of work however. Wonderful project and very nice-looking guitar on completion. Still like my Martin though.

I had a pick guard job just like that. Peeling up; rough underneath on a black finished Epiphone. I sanded it first and blackened the bare wood spots with permanent India Ink which contains shellac. Worked well. Of course it soaks in the surface a little bit not like stain though. The customer said he's never going to remove the pick guard. If he wanted to do that, the top would have needed refinishing anyway.

Word of caution for anyone thinking of using a step drill. Use a straight one, not a spiral one. The spiral ones dig in like you can't believe. You'd blow right through the bridge before you could react.

I've done it both ways unfortunately you couldn't do that in this case because the holes weren't drilled and I didn't want to drill the holes till the thing was glued in place

Heating the frets cause the frets to swell or expand, causing them to grip the ebony even more. That's why there is more tearout. Try cold or chilling the frets as you need to remove them. This will contract or shrink the metal making them easier to remove. This is an old mechanics trick!

That dove on that pick guard is real mother of pearl I know because I had 1 of then in the natural finish top and cherry finish sides back and neck and that was the first thing I had authenticated was that it was real mother of pearl and the reason I had it authenticated was you get knockoffs from china with the gibson name on them and the dove name on the truss rod cover but none of the inlays are mother of pearl and if it is a true gibson dove it is mother of pearl. thats one thing that drives the price of them up. I agree the quality of the guitar today isnt what it was in the 50s when they were all hand made

Another great video - as always - jerry! Although I don't approach your level of skill or experience, I have renovated/restored nearly 100 guitars over the last fifteen years. I haven't yet tried Simichrome, but I've had very good luck with a product called Plastic X, which is an automotive plastics polish. It's still an "elbow grease" product, but it's worked well for me. Give it a try and let me know your considered opinion.
