It's not expensive at all. It could be free, using things from around your home. You could diy and getting the cost down to just paying for feeders and substrate. Different species of trantulas have different requirements, Rose hairs are pretty much one of the easiest. I would personally suggest, curly hair or Arazoina blonde. Just do research on the species you want, not just on basic tranatula care. I suggest the trantula Collective.

Does anyone else have a "bell curve" kind of fear when it comes to spiders? Like, the tiny, tiny spiders are completely cool, but the medium-sized ones (like house spiders) scare the hell out of me. And then if a spider is big and bulky like a tarantula, they're not scary again?

Yep, exactly the same for me. The small spiders like the jumping spider, love them. Tarantulas, own two myself and love it but something about the big long skinny hairless spiders I can't stand lol.

Yes! That’s my “curve” exactly. Love tiny spiders and have a pet Tarantula, but house and wolf spiders scare the pants off of me! I’m getting better at dealing with them, but I don’t think I’ll ever get over the fear factor of a mid-size spider 😅

In the "trade", the rose hair tarantulas are considered a "pet rock". They don't do much. Which can be a pro or a con. Depending on how you see it.

As a chilean, I can testify that these guys are the chillest creatures ever... and they are very common and easy to find, like two weeks ago I took my little brother to a nearby hill and started to scout for a tarantula, took about 5 mins and I found a hole and there she was, a tarantula, completely wild and never before enclosured, I lire her our of the hole and once she got out I took her, she calmly started to walk in my arm, chest, then I passed it to my brother, the same happens, I literally woke her up in the middle of her sleeping (they sleep at day) and she was chilling around. So that as a story, but this is really common, I can assure they are the friendliest spiders out there.

I remember the first time I ever held a tarantula, it was at a Halloween party when I was about 7. Mr. Paul McCormick from Classroom Critters made sure that it was between the ground and a foot in height, and before letting me hold it, he made sure I wasn't going to throw her out of fear. After she bit me, my left arm grew back just fine! (Disclaimer: it was one of the nicest spiders I've ever met, did not bite me, and humans sadly can't grow back appendages so please don't cut your arm off to test.)

Great story, my worst nightmare used to be spider’s as we always had big house spiders nearly every day growing up. Then in my late 30’s I decided enough is enough, so I thought these things aren’t going to go away, so I captured a house spider and put it in a large bowl and just slowly kept putting my hand closer and closer until it walked onto my hand and at that moment I suddenly realised how delicate they are. Now I’ve been researching I think I’m almost obsessed with them to the point of wanting several pet tarantula

I'm from Chile. You just need to get away a few kilometers from the big cities during the warm season and you'll see those spiders running around in fields, between bushes and the like. We call them "araña pollito" (chicken spider) and yes, they are very docile, even in the wild.

I used to have one. I got it from a college friend, mine had been part of a scientific experiment (seriously!) but was very calm, I ended up giving her to a friend who adores various kinds of critters and the last time I visited, Miss Muffet was doing very well. And yes, they are literally easier to care for than a cactus.

I've had my Mexican red knee since she was a sling. She's a bit temperamental, kicks hairs easily and even rears up on occasion. It's not a deal breaker though, she's cool looking and doesn't seem to know you're there if you don't get within 6 inches of her.

I love tarantulas. I used to have a Rose hair my mom bought for me at Petco until my mom's cat busted in the mesh on the lid and it got out (we haven't found it to this day I was 8, I'm now 29). I went camping once with my boy scout troop. The camp we were at was infested with California Brown Tarantulas (Aphonopelma Steindachneri). The females always stay in burrows, but when it was the right time in their lives the males would wander looking for the females, and are extremely docile with only finding a mate on their mind (they wont even eat). One had wandered into our camp, and I picked it up. It was crawling on the back of my hands towards my chest, and I was treadmilling it. I was showing it to the others and adults, when another scout blurts out a "Lemme try!" and proceeds to put both of his hands ontop of the animal pinning it between his hands and mine. Unfortunately. . . Fangs only work downwards on spiders. I still have the twin V-shaped scars on the back of my hand.

@@oreixx well, I've never been bitten by a venomous snake, so I can't compare. I'm sure the spiders venom had something to do with at least some of it. Initially it was a sharp stabbing sensation, but then it was a burning sensation that lasted for a couple hours. Luckily those tarantulas have mild venom, so was alright.

Hello. I’ve kept tarantulas for a while and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciated the positive video. I liked you showed that they aren’t aggressive, evil, or mean. But I would like to note that people should be very cautious about the heat mat. Most reputable tarantula keepers like Toms big spiders or the tarantula collective recommend against using a heat light or mat. Tarantulas have a tendency to dry out and have a hard time molting. That’s just my two cents. Overall thank you very much!

Yes, along with that placing a heat mat under the enclosure is logically a pretty bad idea if you consider what the natural reaction of most burrying animals is if they get too hot - they burrow into the ground to avoid overheating and dehydration, and if your mat is below the enclosure it gets hotter and dryer the deeper they go. On the not being evil part though, my L.p. disagrees, thing is like the devil incarnate LOL. jokes aside though, theres a lot of Ts that can show quite a fair bit of temperament, and I know from a lot of peopel that the onyl T they ever got bitten by were G. roseas because they underestimated that they can sometimes get pissy too heh.

Very true! My only exception for mine is a female Ephebopus murinus. It was inactive when it was brought to me and I noticed that it was coming up and night and laying in the water dish. As an experiment I put in freshly soaked mounds of moss and she would go lay on theirs. Now I have cut down the ventilation and put a tiny one inch heat pad on the side with the water to bring up the humidity. I have a thermostat in the sick bay hooked to the heating source so that is under control. I have the temp wavering between 75 and 78 since I know this is a tropical species. Now she has put down a molt bed and I am almost positive that she will be molting soon. Have you ever seen the water sitting behavior before and do you think I am missing something in my research? Just figured I would ask of you have that much expierence.

Yay, more spider tutorials!! Been keeping them for years now. Personally I'd go for Grammostola pulchripes (Chaco Golden Knee) rather than G. porteri/rosea (Rose hair) as best starter tarantula. Pulchripes get a bit bigger, nice yellow striping, and many people report psycho rose hairs, despite their "beginner" nature they can be quite nasty. Best not to handle anything, regardless of temperament or toxicity as you're more likely to harm them than they are to harm you. Otherwise, they are as Clint says, basically pet rocks. Pretty to look at. Check out some of the MANY blue species of tarantulas out there if you're thinking about getting into the hobby. It can be quite rewarding working your way up to the "Expert" species.

I happen to be one of the owners of a "psycho" Rosehair. She's nasty but I love her even though she threat postures and kicks hairs fairly often. Just got a Tliltacotl albopilosus and was genuinely surprised that I could handle them without having hairs kicked at me or fangs being shown so it's definitely nice having a T I can handle if I want to though I'm generally just going to leave them be in their enclosure because there's no sense in risking stressing the sentient teddy bear with eight legs when I can just as easily go love on a ratty or one of my Ball Pythons instead.

As a taranta fan, this video was overally really good. One thing I do wish, is that you used her scientific nam and explained why in the tarantula hobby using scientic names is important. Alaso G. rosea the speicies in this video, has fallen out of favor in recent years and can be a little hard to find. A lot of times too, you have to buy them as a sling and they grwo at a rate of a glacier and boy to I mean SLOW. I have had my little G. rosea sling for two years now and I swear she's still the same size she was when I got her despite having molted four times now lol Oh also arcrylic lids with holes drilled in for ventilation are better than mesh. Tarantulas do get stuck in the mesh and some can even chew their way out of mesh so it's really not the best. I do love them though. For me it's a tie between my G. rosea and my little T. albopolosum (curly hari tarantula)

Aww, she's such a beautiful girl. I adore tarantulas. I've had dozens of various species over the years. A rose hair was my first. He hooked out at about 10 years old and passed away shortly after that. He was such a good boy. He was about the size of my thumbnail when I got him. It's so rewarding to watch them grow. Makes me happy to see that you're not a handler. As I said, I've had dozens of tarantulas over the years, and I never handled a single one. No need to, it's too dangerous for them.

"Tarantula" actually is a name for "big spider" in many european languages. The "original" tarantula is a wolf spider, Lycosia tarantula and is common and well known in southern europe so the conquistadors applied that name to the large spiders they encountered in the new world

Well, if you care to look at it that deeply, that's fine. Mygalomorphae, the infraorder which tarantulas belong to, have paraxial fangs, among other distinguishing factors, that cause them to be classified differently from the araneomorphae, which accounts for all the "true" spiders, including Lycosidae. By modern standards, "tarantula" refers to our fluffy mygalomorph friends, not to be confused with the not-so-fluffy ones, such as trapdoor spiders and the Australian funnel web spiders.

This post is surprisingly insightful when it comes as to why they are slightly less terrifying than other eight legged folk. When Clint mentioned wolf spiders I was very interested in the different physiologies and was very close to looking up pictures as I usually do with reptiles. I think I dodged a bullet there lol The not moving very quickly part is a big one too, as long as they are essentially a standing picture they are acceptable but I think I prefer them where they are - VERY far away and in no way, shape or forrm coming towards me

I was so pumped when I saw the title of this video. I had one of these from when I was in first grade until just after I graduated high school. Very cool animal, surprisingly docile. 10/10 would get one again if my wife didn't hate spiders. I always find that even within the hobby, people say some pretty ridiculous things about tarantulas (ie. “they can drown without a rock/sponge in their water bowl”, “if you have a pet, why wouldn’t you hold it”, “they need lots of humidity/heat”, etc). The fact that you know SO much about their TRUE care is so helpful to new keepers and people looking to get into the tarantula keeping hobby. Thank you for always making very informative and fun videos. You help the reptile/exotics keeping hobby a better place ❤️

I'm keeping tarantulas too, and I have to say for most of the common "beginner" type species it's literally don't actively try to kill them, and make sure they cant fall to death and its going to do great. But for most of them its also like youre taking care of a pet rock, except for that 1 exciting time of the week where you go and feed it lol.

I’ve had my Chilean Rose Hair tarantula for nine years, since she was smaller than the size of a dime. She is incredibly gentle, I’ve let my son hold her before he was two years old (the only reason I didn’t let him any younger was because of fear he would hurt her not the other way around!) Even when I feed her she doesn’t immediately sink her fangs into the cricket or worm if it isn’t making obvious vibrations of it being prey, if she doesn’t feel the vibrations from the moving insect or worm, she lightly touches it with her toe several times until she confirms it is in fact food and not my fingers. Then she use her legs to scoop it under her and make the bite. I love her so much, I think the best tarantula you can own if you want to handle your spider a lot.

Hey Clint, you should know that your spider videos have been curing me of my spider phobia. I'm starting to think of them as interesting creatures instead of creepy bugs! I even found a spider in my house the other day and instead of killing it I took it outside....with my bare hand! Please keep doing spider videos. Maybe wolf spiders next. It should be noted that getting one of these as a baby is a slightly different ballgame than getting one as an adult. For the first few molts, you do need to be diligent about making sure they have water because they can dehydrate rather quickly. Once they do put on a little bit of size, it’s then all just a matter of being patient, since these tarantulas grow at a speed comparable to continental drift.

The hairs they kick; they itch less than a mosquito bite, and same for their fangs' "venom" . They are the most docile little furry adorable floofies. Fun to handle and very great friends to chill out with. One time I forgot mine out on my laptop where she fell asleep because the computer was so warm and cozy for her. I woke up the next morning and she was right where I left her. They're the best companions for busy people!

When I decided to get a tarantula, I decided that Grammostolas (like this one) are a bit too passive, and decided on Lasiodora parahybana (or Brazilian salmon pink tarantula). Best decision ever! Everything covered in this video still applies, and they look similiar, except parahybanas are bigger, longer lived, more active.. pretty much just better, if a bit more inclined to bite you. Which is not a problem, since I don't handle mine that often - when I do, I then have boils on my arms for next month or so. I got mine as a little almost trancluscent nymph, and by now my fair lady been for 10 years with me, and don't seem to be going anywhere. Man, spiders are just the best.

I love that you finally did a tarantula but Grammastolas in the USA have recently been a bit more scarce than usual. Some more common Ts might be Lasiodora Parahybana, T. Vagans, and T albipolosum. Ive kept all of these and the most difficult is the T. Vagans.

About 2 months ago I was given a 10 year old Rose Hair tarantula that lived in a filthy, very stinky, barren, boring, sad enclosure. I gave her a tarantula mansion. She shows her appreciation for her new wonderful place by hanging out and being beautiful. I swear her color immediately brightened up. She un- crumpled and spread herself out. She transformed from dull brown to sheer gray/brown/pink loveliness. She has a little attitude though. I used to think I'd die of old age but now she is how I think I'll die. Haha! I don't know if she'll bite, but I'll let you know someday. She is huge and so beautiful and I love her.

I miss my old chilean rose hair. I named her Rosie. I would hold her and slowly turn my hand, and she would slowly crawl around it. I learned that it had two tiny claws at the tip of each leg that it extends (sort of like a cat?) that it hangs onto your skin with. Never had hair flicked at me. Only one time when it had a sudden burst of energy did it go off the table (carpeted floor, luckily) and as it was startled when it hit the ground, it made a dash to go under the bed. I quickly jumped in front of it, and that is when it rared up on its hind legs and bared its fangs at me. Only time it ever did that. You were lucky to be allowed to have one as a kid.

But recently I've been trying to desensitize myself to them and honestly I didn't really get that anxious feeling I normally do while watching your girl here, she reminds me of a little fuzzy crab and she's really pretty :3

Definitely don't regret getting my pink-toe (basically on a whim). They don't really move around all that much, though an avicularia avicularia is a bit more active than most, but its definitely interesting to watch the long term changes to the enclosure that they will make over days and weeks. I wake up in the morning and its hiding from the light that I have turn on, later on it gets more comfortable and slowly meanders its way to its favorite spot, then moves back again at some point while I'm asleep. When I moved it into its new enclosure it took a while but its finally started webbing its little hide hole behind the cork bark, with singular strands going to plant leaves. A tarantula is kind of like keeping a carnivorous plant. It requires a little bit more care than, you know, none, but you get to observe its growth over months and years.
