Fun story. I bought a pair of these Ariat Ostrich at a thrift store for $50. They squeaked like mad. Lots of baby powder fixed that. I’ve found the leather to be very tight(doesn’t breathe) making my feet sweat. Very comfortable though.

From the stories that I’ve been told as a Texan, ostrich leather is mostly appealing due to it’s freshness. Wearing thicker boots in this heat is not always the most comfortable, so this leather offers a nice little balance

I bought a pair of ostrich skin cowboy boots in the early 90's in Kentucky(?). Black. I still have them. They are super light, still super flexible and I am very happy with them. They have been re-soled a couple of times. These boots are for show, not for working on the ranch. Great video.

Never really thought about the history of ostrich leather specifically. Pretty interesting! I only have a belt made from it so I wouldn't be able to test maximum durability, but it's held up great over at least 6 years and I love the look. It's a little too loud for me on shoes but a great look on a belt. It was surprising how weak it seemed compared to its reputation.

all i have worn is ostrich since 2016. The look is great. They are more comfortable but that could be just the extras added because of the price. The main thing is they are easier to maintain. My cow leather before took a lot of polishing to keep them good looking, maybe weekly. The ostrich, I would clean and polish once a month. They were fine after rain and easy to knock off dust. I only replaced the Cav's and Lamas because of a bad sole replacement job during covid labor shortage and my normal boot smith was closed. I've had Cavanders, Tony Lama, and BlackJack ostrich.

I live in Thailand and one of the main sources of leather here ia buffalo hide, from the Asian water buffalo. When I was lad (a long, long time ago) I had some saddle bags custom made for my big bike. I was advised to use buffalo leather, because it does not burn, the bags being located right above the exhaust when in situ.They never did burn too, so I guess I was well advised. Any thoughts or knowledge on this fact?

I have Ostrich in leg, smooth, and of course quilled. In quality boots my favorite thing is how they go on a bit snug and loosen just right in the first few minutes. Correct fitting ostrich boots should do this every time. The leather also breathes better than bovine, and most other leathers. One of my favorite hides…and I have all the hides Ariat “donated” and many more. Ostrich, in all its forms remains one of my favorite.

Ostrich really needs preparing before use. The easiest way to do this is to paint the flesh side with Tokonole and burnish with a glass slicker. If it’s still loose and fuzzy do it again. Next hammer down the bumps so it keeps the look without being rough and always back it with either 3-4oz cow or non stretch membrane and 3-4oz cow
@pepleatherlab3872 Жыл бұрын
It's an odd aspect of Ostrich leather. The strongest flesh segment of ostrich is the calf and foot, which isn't cherished as much because it lacks the signature plumage pattern. It does however have an interesting, almost reptilian pattern that's quite nice. I occasionally use it in crafting wallets and it's inexpensive, handsome, light weight and extremely long lasting. *shrugs*

I have never wore this model of boot, but I have three pair of Ariats. The first thing I noticed is they make you walk a little different, which is better for your posture. I think it has to do with their stabilization footbed. They are comfortable right out of the box. All 3 soles are rubber and work well for traction.
@Suit_and_tie_reptile_guy3 ай бұрын
Professional leather worker here- in my experience ostrich is basically exactly how you depicted it. It sucks in terms of durability, but it looks different and people like that. The only way to keep it from ripping or shriveling is to cement it to a nice thick slab of veg. I got a complaint a few years back from a guy who ordered a ostrich holster for a colt python. He said that I cheated him because it was just "wrapped" in ostrich. I tried explaining to him that yeah, of course its wrapped. Without a backing it would basically be a very weak stretchy sock
@marydetray67762 ай бұрын
So, I think the part that you didn't factor in is that ostrich leather doesn't scuff or scratch as easily, I dont know if you test that, but most of all, as you stated, it tested on the higher end of along with mammal leathers but it's much lighter weight. So, when you factor in grain for grain of weight it is actually twice as strong, the weight makes it just as strong but you're getting a lighter product. I love ostrich leather, for the feel, durability, flexibility and lighter weight. The reason it costs so much more is that you can only get 1/3 the amount from a single animal as you can with cow leathers.

as a leatherworker, i can say, for certain, that normal wear & tear has less of an effect on ostrich hide compared to that of cowhide. you can easily scratch boot leather with your thumbnail. the same scratching on ostrich leaves no real marks. with the same amount of use, it will last a noticeably longer, and have less wear marks than cowhide. IMHO, ostrich boots are best for casual wearing, or riding, but they’re a waste of money if one uses them for general choring or as work boots.

I have a pair of ostrich skin Luccheses I bought in December 2012. My wife gave me a pair of calf/cow Luccheses as a wedding gift when we got married in September 2013. So, my boots are 10 and almost 11 years old. Between the two, the Ostrich has held up better over time. I was never consistent about conditioning them and the cow leather boots have cracked in a few places. Ostrich has no problems whatsoever. Now, I am not a hard user of these boots. I am not a cowboy (I’m sure you’re shocked). But it may be that Ostrich just wears longer with less maintenance. That quality would be hard to measure and quantify for a KZbin video.
