I love Rosemary! One note, I think it should have been mentioned that if using vinegar one cannot use a metal lid on jar or the lid will corrode.

I made my first echinacea tincture last year after receiving your book. I’ve been very impressed with the results. Last winter I felt like I was coming down ill three different times. As soon as I started feeling yucky I took this tincture as recommended and I never got sick. I’m making a much larger batch this year so I can share with family and friends.

Yes, as the producer of this video, I can add that it’s hard for the actual person in videos such as this because they’re not able to monitor and respond to all the KZbin comments. I’m sure she would if she could because she’s such a kind and caring person.

This isn’t her channel. She’s a guest on this channel. She’s an incredible woman and does in fact interact with her students and audience as much as possible… but perhaps try going to her website and email her instead of bashing her online publicly on a media channel that isn’t even hers to manage and comment on.

I see so many people stressing out about making tinctures where they literally weigh everything. I wonder how our grandparents made theirs without an electronic kitchen scale or measuring cups.Of course,eyeballing it (common sense).Also, many are using really high proof alcohol, which in my opinion is pure poison.Where I come from,nobody had such high proof alcohol, as most people were making their homemade alcohol, which was more like 30 to 35%.

Yes totally agree. There are so many variations on tincture making. This video was so handy. Love Rosemary. I only have access to 44% proof vodka. It is more affordable to me than than the higher proof which can be pricey in Australia where I’m from. I guess whatever you use is still intentionally powerful medicine. Happy medicine making. 🌿🌿

I agree. Folk method using vodka or similar to cover packed down herb by half inch in jar with lid. Shake daily. Leave 6 weeks or so. Strain. Bottle.

@@francescabunch1582 Did you mean 44 proof? 80 proof alcohol is 40% alcohol and 60% water. 44 proof would be 22% alcohol. People confuse proof with percentage.

You mention not storing in direct sunlight @2:50ish, but before that you had set them in the window while the herbs were infusing if that's the right word. Is it OK to put them in sunlight before the process is finished? Thanks, used to live in Sonoma Cty, hope you are well.

@@kittykat57 ..most herbalists I have listened to online say to tincture in a dark, cool, undisturbed place. I think to occaisionally shake is ok. After tincturing and straining, again..dark and cool like the colored bottles and out of sunlight. This is the method I use as a budding herbalist. I do shake and swirl them alot while filling the jars with the alcohol and herbs or flowers.

you mention harvesting roots in fall but when do you harvest leaves and flowers?
@jackperry6020
@jackperry6020 4 жыл бұрын
I harvest the flowers throughout the spring and summer. As soon as all of the petals emerge, I chop at the nearest "node", wash the heck out of them, dry them overnight on a drying rack in front of a fan, then snip the flowers off of the stems the next day, and dry them out separately, flipping the flowers daily. I probably won't harvest leaves until I let my last round of buds go to seed. Then I will harvest some roots when I divide them up this fall :) I too, like to use the whole plant!

Hi. I LOVE your videos and site! I am very happy to have found your site. I ordered your book too and can't wait to read it and try the recipes! I was wondering if you had a video or any information you could share on using borage plant grown at home for medicinal purposes. I am a little confused between borage oil and a borage tincture you can make from your own plant at home. What is the difference between them as far as medicinal purposes; can both be used topically, for skin and hair treatments, for example, or one is taken internally? I haven't been able to find a really good explanation nor recipes on how to make them, and then use them alone or adding them to other things to use on one's hair or skin. I would greatly appreciate any information you could share, and if you have any videos on the subject as well. Thank you! God bless.

Can I use home made wine instead of vodka?
@AgainsttheGrainHomestead
@AgainsttheGrainHomestead 6 ай бұрын
The reason commercial alcohol, including vodka, is always recommended is because you know what the actual alcohol percent is. The finished product needs to be 25% alcohol to be sure it's properly preserved. If you can get that with your homemade wine, it'll be fine.

I had to dig out the roots of my 3 year old Echinacea plant because it died this summer due to our intense heat wave. What I have now is just the top part of the roots (not the long, stringy roots). They are short and stunted and dark. I'm not sure why I don't have the longer roots - maybe root rot? Anyway, I still want to use what I have and not waste them. Since there isn't much, can I still store them in alcohol or should I wait until I harvest more roots - which may take a few more years.

Hi noticed no one answered your question. You should take this on first symptoms of a illness. What it does is stimulate the immune system. Do not take it longer than needed. Taking to prevent from getting sick. Only take it one week on one week off. It does not cure your illness it just stimulates your own immune system to that.

Adding a tincture to tea is a good easy way of doing that. Just gotta let it sit for a few minutes. Even though a tincture is usually alcohol based, you're taking it in such a small dosage that you shouldn't worry about it getting you 'tipsy'. But it's still probably best to evaporate it if you're offering the tincture to a child.

Help! Last month I made Echinacea tincture for the first time. When it was ready to decant the liquid it was a cloudy, brown color - similar to latte. Straining it through coffee filters cleared up the cloudiness, but the remaining liquid burned my mouth. For several hours afterwards sweet things (like apples etc.) tasted extremely salty. What went wrong?

K. York no, you end up using them for the tincture and the plant can’t grow them back. It’s possible that a big bush of echinacea could have several plants in one cluster, they you only take one or two ans put back the rest. Also, you can wait until after your plant has gone to seed and replant lots of new flowers just by broadcasting it’s seeds. I’ve had great success with seeds in prepared ground. In the spring once they are up I transplant them everywhere :)

@AgainsttheGrainHomestead

The plant is killed when harvesting the root. However if one is careful, they could divide the root and only take half. When using echinacea root, it's best if you wait until the root is 3 years old as it's full of mature medicine.
