My Grandmother always used old blankets for wadding. It was an inexpensive and sustainable way to make quilts. I have her first quilt that she made in 1929. (She was 13.) It’s made from her old clothing. Grammy was sustainable before it was cool. :) perhaps looking at resale shops for cheap blankets would be less expensive than buying wadding. This is beautiful btw. This was a joy to watch. Thank you :)

Fellow Australian quilter here. A few tips 1. Definitely cut your pieces using strips as you worked out 2. Generally only cut with the rotary cutter in your dominant hand 3. If you going to prewash fabric, make sure you prewash the coloured (diamond) fabrics, border fabrics and backing fabric so that you don’t have the top shrink later and the borders warp 4. 80/20 blend is a popular choice. I like cotton or bamboo if I want more drape though 5. I iron my backing fabric, and then tape it around the edges to my dining room floor, then layer the batting and top and pin with curved pins like you did. Taping the backing down keeps it taught which is more important for machine quilting to stop the backing bunching up, but not too much of an issue for hand quilting 6. For a nicer finish, I hand sew down the binding to the back, but if I need it done quickly, I’ll machine stitch the binding to the back, and then machine stitch down the front with a blanket stitch on my machine. Overall, congratulations on making your first quilt though, and you did really well with the diamonds! I’ve been quilting a few years, and still chop off points some times.

Great tips! I’ll also add that you don’t need to reverse stitch at the beginning and end of your patches. Chain piecing is a great method too, especially if you’re sewing lots of the same size patchwork. Pressing your patchwork either open or to one side comes down to what you prefer - some quilters get quite pedantic about pressing but I’ll do either 😄. Patchwork and quilting can become very addictive! I’ve lost count of the number I’ve made. I hope you continue with this journey.

I hand piece, hand quilt and hand bind quilts. I really love hand binding. It’s my favorite part. My least favorite part is cutting. I was really hoping you’d figure out the strip method of cutting those diamonds and I was cheering when you did. I think most quilters find sandwiching a quilt to be exhausting. I’ve done it on my bed and the floor but it’s always tiring. I’m so glad you liked quilting. I think it’s great fun and a wonderful hand project. This was such a fun video.

Your first quilt turned out lovely! And your mitered corners on your border are sublime! Good job! Here are some additional tips on quilting from across the Pacific: 1. In addition to the top, don't forget to quilt the borders also. It is important to also stitch these layers together. You can mimic the design you did inside your diamonds or you can do something different. 2. Next time you hand quilt, try using a quilting hoop. It is similar to an embroidery hoop, but much larger (and thicker) to accommodate all of the layers. This will ensure that your tension is the same between all of the layers of fabric and batting and will reduce puckering on the back. 3. Generally, I use 100% cotton thread (Guttermann is my favorite) to hand quilt with. The DMC thread you used is considerably thicker than traditional quilting thread and is typically used for Sashiko quilts. With that said, I do love the rustic look your thread gives with your design. 4. Do not stress about piecing the border sections. I have many quilt tops that have pieced borders. 5. I agree with you on the binding. I find hand stitching the binding to be less stressful than machine stitching in the ditch. 6. Store the curved safety pins you used in a container, but keep the pins open. That way you will have them ready to use next time you are sandwiching the top, batting, and backing together. But be careful when pulling them out of the container because you might get stuck. 7. Don't throw out your scraps from trimming the diamonds and the backing. You can use them in another quilt. Also, I am glad you decided to cut strips first before you cut out all of your diamonds. Strips will save on fabric waste. 8. A time saver (and thread saver), when stitching the pieces together, instead of stitching two pieces and then cutting the threads, try butting the next set of pieces up to the previous set and stitch them together. You can leave one or two stitches between each set. Keep doing this until you have stitched together all of the pieces for the top of each column (or row), then clip them apart. Then add on the next piece to each of those pairs in the same fashion. You don't need to worry about back stitching because the stitches will be sealed with the next set of seams. 9. When ironing, don't forget to set the seam (like you would when making clothes) before pressing the seam open or to one side. This will push the stitches into the fabric and make the seam lay flatter. 10. I always iron the right side and the wrong side of my quilts before I layer it with the batting. This allows me to admire my work, but also look for any holes in the seams. You won't see the holes on the wrong side because the seam allowance covers them. And mistakes in quilts are expected. Not all of the pieces will line up and that is ok. 11. If you don't already have one, get the 1/4 inch foot for your sewing machine. It makes piecing a lot easier and will help you keep that 1/4 inch seam allowance consistent when piecing. Thank you for sharing your process. I can't wait to see your next quilt!

Impressive for a first time. If you do this again.... And you probably will Check out thrift stores for King of Queen size sheet sets for the backing. The back doesn't have to be white or even a solid color. In fact I think they're nicer using a print or color fabric. I've got too many quilt tops and not enough ambition to quilt them. So the last couple I gifted to gkids I put two quilts together for a double sided one. Much more satisfying and my unfinished pile hopefully will get reduced this way. This double sided one I made originally for my daughter when she was about 12. Two different tops. I sent it to her son in March this year .... He's 18mnths old. Only toke 25yrs to get both of them finally quilted together. I loved designing the quilt tops back in the day just hate HATE the actual quilting.

The quilt is beautiful. One rule you did not know. You don’t wash quilt fabric. You wash the finished quilt so everything will shrink together. Diamonds are hard but you love a challenge. The easiest technique for a single person is Quilt-as-You-Go. You are a very talented woman who accomplishes anything you put your mind to.

I got started in sewing by making quilts. I have been trying really hard to use only natural materials for everything. 80/20 is a great compromise and very popular. All cotton gives a lovely crinkle look when you wash the quilt, but if you don’t want that, all poly is the way to go. Cotton is the easiest one for hand quilting in my opinion. All poly also makes GREAT baby quilts and heavy use quilts as it does hold up to lots of washing better. All poly also is best for extra loft or extra puffy quilts. Wool or wool cotton blends are my absolute favorite for warm quilts and bamboo (or bamboo silk) is amazing for quilts you want to use in the summer. Bamboo is the most expensive and most eco friendly. But they feel amazing. Only downside is for hand quilting the bamboo fiber gets caught on thread.

Another way to do the binding that may be less frustrating is to machine stitch the binding to the front of the quilt and then hand stitch the the wrap over part to the back of the quilt. Also, it helps to sew your binding strips together at a 45 degree angle so you reduce the bulk of the seam allowance in the binding.

I think you would absolutely fall in love with the world of EPP quilting - English Paper Piecing. You essentially 'wrap' pieces of card with fabric, the card being in the quintessential quilting shapes, diamonds, hexagons, octagons, triangles, etc. You use a glue stick to secure the fabric (temporarily) around the card, and sew the pieces together by hand. It takes a while but is so satisfying. Look it up, I'm sure you've already come across it. I loved the Stitch Sisters video about EPP quilting. Amazing work on your first quilt, you have already mastered it! It's a beautiful piece that will likely stay in your life for many years if not generations! xx

Quilter here! 🖐🏻 I have been waiting for this quilt update for ages! I love it! You did an amazing job for your first quilt. I have to admit that this pattern is not beginner - even though it seems pretty straight forward. So good for you! I did a similar pattern last Christmas and I ended up with the same problem at the edges with the points not matching up. I was so frustrated, but I just accepted it and then added a border and moved on. For batting/wadding, I have always used a mixed batting by Quilter’s Dream called Bamboo (it used to be called Orient but for obvious reasons they changed the name). It’s a mix of bamboo, cotton, and silk. I live in a hot climate (California) and this mix is the best for being warm in the winter, but cooling in the summer. I LOVE the colors you chose for this project. And I also am so impressed you hand quilted it!!! Just wow!

I only quilt my smallest quilts at home, and send bigger ones to a longarmer. This also helps if you want a big quilt but don’t have room to lay it out. I do my binding by sewing it to the back, then press to the front and top stitch it down. This way you can see exactly where you are catching the fabric. No one will notice if the stitches are a bit off on the back, especially if you make a good color choice for your binding thread.

To be honest I’m tempted to unpick the machine stitching and do it by hand instead… maybe one day when I’m really bored 😂

Hi Janelle - I always listen to your videos while I quilt! Congratulations on making your first quilt. You did a terrific job. What a lovely quilt. You’re going to treasure that for many years. I am really interested to see how you use these newly acquired skills in your sewing practice. Keep up the amazing work.
