Thank you so much channel 4 and Rosie to raising awareness. I’m a wheelchair user and am 31 and have to live into my parents garage because their is no accessible places to rent. The council won’t help, (only if I have kids) and I have to buy a place of my own and then adapt it. Thanks for raising awareness on this issue!

Yep. I'm registered disabled too, and my council will only let me into a bungalow if one of my kids were disabled. Moving around a 3 bed house is impossible at times. I was stuck living in the living room last year, and this I've been stuck upstairs. Welcome to Britain.

I think wheelchair accessibility should be a standard requirement in all new build houses. When my parents built their house the doorways, light switches and power outlet points had to conform to accessibility regulations.

@@aaroncousins4750 uhhh.... what's the point in renting a house if you can only use one room? Disabled people can cook food so they should be able to get into their kitchen, plus go to the bathroom plus it's not ideal to spend all day in your bedroom especially if you have guests (because disabled people can have friends) so really the whole apartment: bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room should be accessible.

This is a very solid point, when I broke my ankle this summer I realized just how inaccessible my house was even as a single story, since a wheelchair couldn't fit down the hallways. If I wasn't otherwise young and fit I literally couldn't have gone to the bathroom. I had to hop 10+ ft to reach it

I’m surprised that that isn’t already a thing. After all, there are filters for “garden” and “parking”. One more box to tick for “wheelchair accessible” surely wouldn’t be a ton of effort both for the website devs and estate agents?
@roseduste80

It's not the website coding that's the effort, it's having someone check the property with accessibility in mind. Agents are very lazy. I'd expect to see them tick the box because a property has no stairs, without giving any thought to if the doorways are wide enough or if there's enough space to get a wheelchair next to the toilet.

I know that feeling. I had an accident at work and have been stuck upstairs in my house for 3 years, as I'm in a wheelchair and we only have a toilet upstairs. Luckily I have my wife who cares for me. She had to give up work. Luckily my council are finally doing something to help, and are going to knock my garage down and build a downstairs bedroom and bathroom, and adjust all the doors so I can get to the kitchen and garden and outside. But I have been on the waiting list for 2 years now. Planning has just been put in, I have to wait 8 weeks for that, then I have to go through the whole grant process, then tender out to builders for the work, then actually have it built. So I reckon it won't be far off another year before it's built. I haven't been outside in 3 years now, haven't even worn a pair of shoes in 3 years. If I have friends come to see me (very rare) they have to lie on the bed with me as there's nowhere else for them to sit. Life being disabled is tough.

Unfortunately people don’t care from all aspects that’s why us people with disabilities are often cut out of normal life.

Nearly 20 years ago my Mum and Dad started to plan and build our home (in Ireland). The architect said there was a regulation that the door widths, light/appliance switches and plug heights all had to conform to accessibility standards. Recently my Dad developed a neurological disorder and will probably need mobility aids and/or a wheelchair. We're so fortunate my parents' house already has everything he requires to get around, including a downstairs shower room. My brothers are converting the smaller living room into a bedroom for Dad. Now we just have to get a ramp for the back door and we're sorted.

I agree. This is why I say that ableism is still rampant in this country. it's systemic. Most people are not overtly ableist or think that they are doing anything. but they don't think about accessibility unless they have to, as in someone points it out (usually someone disabled). And even then they're like 'well, it just costs too much to make it accessible to EVERYONE.' So we'll make it usable for most people. This doesn't mean that I think people are automatically horrible, it's just frustrating how exclusive their way of thinking has been shaped. We need to bring up the future generation to have inclusive thinking. In general, the private rental market needs more regulation since most people are living in long-term rental accommodation now and have little chance of ever owning their own home. Some argue that private landlords should not be told what to do with their property. But if you're renting it out to the general public who for the most part you're not allowed to discriminate under the protected classes of the equality act (of which disability is in there), then landlords should be told what they can and can't allow, especially cos they're not living there. Some make sense like if a certain thing a tenant wants to bring will cause unreasonable damage or is a safety hazard etc.

@@rachelcookie321 you’d be surprised, getting realtors to do anything practical or “tedious” like this is really difficult. At least here in America anyways. I used to do tech support for all of the real estate agents and brokers and their local realtors’ associations for all 50 US states. I’d help them add or search for listings, correct things, and navigate through the web based mls systems where they list and look for property. This is where they put in all the details for a place like how many bedrooms, vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, central HVAC, skylight, septic or sewer, an HOA, etc. Wheelchair accessible (ADA compliant) was one of several checkable boxes for various accessibility features on every listing. This was either ignored or checked along with every single other box on the listing in order to gain the system and get their properties to come up no matter what someone searched for. I can without a doubt say that realtors are some of the dumbest people on the planet. It’s _very_ easy to become one and they have almost zero oversight. Dumb, lazy, self important and obstinate people. 9 times out of 10 they were furious that they couldn’t log in, but it was bc they were entering their passwords either with caps lock on or num lock off. I had a lady call me once saying her mls system “wasn’t working” and after many more vague answers to my questions I finally deduced that her _fckng computer was OFF_ her first thought when her screen was black and unresponsive wasn’t to check for power, it was to call the wrong helpdesk and be an absolute asshole for half an hour. No worries, I taught her how to turn it on eventually and she’s still brokering $800k home sales every week out in Arizona. 🙄

My brother had Muscular dystrophy and was in a wheelchair. We rented. In one place my mother had to build a ramp herself (she did and considering she knew nothing about carpentry it was pretty good, but not a permanentsolution) it took over a year for the landlord to get a ramp (cement) put in. Another place it took begging to get ramps put in the development, including one on sidewalk by our house (Just one step unlike the last place that had like 10) so until we did we were using like a suitcase ramp. Definitely more thought needs to be put into accessibility across all aspects of daily living. It's not just about having the filter option, it's also about the choice! Have you ever tried searching for an accessible holiday for example? Initially, you're presented with thousands of properties, then you tick the box for "accessible" properties and the "choice" plummets to two or three (if you're lucky!) I think that all properties should be made accessible, where practical. Anyone can become disabled at any time, at any age. It only takes one accident or one diagnosis of a neurological disease etc.

I've experienced two sides of the coin. Firstly, I was severely disabled and could walk very short distances with crutches. Life was fine & manageable because I was mobile. Then I survived 2 Strokes, firstly a mild one then a week later a severe one that put me in a wheelchair & affected my speech (there's loads of other issues I won't bore you with). Everything changed. Turning my World into a Hell on Earth. From my perspective I've seen & experienced just how thoughtless and inconsiderate people really are. Sure, there's folk who really do care. Then there's the rest who avoid contact and really don't care and take advantage when it suits them. Even though they SAY they "help disabled" people, when they really don't. The hypocrisy is widespread. Yep, even by Nurses and other staff in Hospitals. Don't start me on Carers. A lot of them are ignorant to the point of being dangerous, with no business being near anyone frail or dependent. Often focused on their own conveniences and you as the "client" (who pays their wages), are the last thing on their minds. When in a Wheelchair, it's a whole world of frustration and exclusion. Taxi drivers take the mick by jacking their prices up 3 or 4 times. Without any safety straps or anything (totally illegal), and they get away with it because they know the Council will do nothing due to the Councils fear of being called "Racist" (the Taxi drivers are mainly lazy, unskilled Pakistani men where I live). I could write a Novel about all the injustices, blatant discrimination & intolerance on top of all the daily hardships that come with Wheelchair use. I won't. You absolutely will not believe it.

Having to deal with all of that sounds absolutely horrible... My mobility disability is far less immediately impactful (as in, I have to spend most of my life in bed, but can hop downstairs if necessary) but even I've experienced a lot of frustration with inaccessibility, so I can't imagine how much of a bloody pain it must be to navigate the world's very-much-active ignorance from a chair. A lot of people really don't get that society's attitude towards disability is almost always the part we struggle with the most, because it's part of every single piece of architecture and design in the world, let alone the actual people. That said, is it necessary to specify "lazy, unskilled" as part of referring to the race of those taxi drivers? Even if all of those descriptors are true in isolation (and not safely providing accessibility definitely warrants an insult or two) the phrasing plays into an all-too-prevalent stereotype of South Asian folks that can be pretty harmful. I'd recommend writing that novel. People need to hear this stuff, and having it be where they can't so easily look away is always good.
