Really fun video, and I think having the Finnish girl made it very interesting! Her familiarity with Swedish probably made it a lot harder getting the word past her, you could almost tell she was trying to figure out the word and pass it on, unlike the others who mostly tried to replicate the sounds! The thing with Swedish tough is that it has this pitch accent that is super important for Swedish Swedish speakers, but doesn’t exist in the native Swedish of Finland, so when she tries to pass on the word as it would have been spoken in Finland (and the swedes would surely have understood), it loses the pitch accent, and after three more jumps it’s unrecognisable for the swedes, even tough for someone not used to Swedish it sounds very similar. It would have been fun to see how it would go if you put her in the last spot, where her familiarity might have helped instead of making it harder! If anyone is interested in the pitch accent, this video is quite interesting kzbin.info/www/bejne/oonTaJKJn8ygaZYsi=e3Rr5Uza6P8g43u_

I wonder if the Finnish girl had such a hard time because her school taught Swedish as us Swedish speaking Finns pronounce it, rather than how it is spoken in Sweden. Technically the same language, but the pronounciation is more different than say, English in the UK and US, slightly depending on the area. For example, the word for animal, "djur", is pronounced with the D in fron in Finland, but without it in Sweden.
@qwineth
@qwineth Ай бұрын
Yeah, rikssvenska is pronounced quite differently, the pitch accent etc. I have little difficulty understanding spoken Finnish Swedish or reading newspapers etc in Swedish, but have hard time managing in Stockholm as that pitch, that weird sing-song accent is so strong and confusing :) I believe that finlandssvenska is actually closer to the historical accent than the modern Swedish spoken in Sweden...
@Narnendil
@Narnendil Ай бұрын
@@qwineth About historical accent. According to Wikipedia the pronunciation differences aren't bigger than between other Swedish dialects such as between Malmö, Göteborg and Umeå. A few words have a more archaic pronunciation in Finnish Swedish, such as djur and adjö. Some Finnish Swedish dialects (but not the standard Finnish Swedish they normally teach in school) have more archaic grammar and pronunciation than most Swedish dialects. Though some Swedish dialects are also very archaic, like bondska and some dalmål. Most Finnish Swedish dialects have lost their pitch accent, possibly under the influence of Finnish, whilst Swedish Swedish has kept the pitch accent and is therefore more archaic when it comes to pitch accent specifically. The pronunciation of the pitch accent also varies a lot between different Swedish dialects.

The poor finnish girl at the second place 😂 She was trying so hard to understand and guess the actual word. I see a lot of ppl here questioning her actual ability of swedish language since she looked so clueless but I think it's actually the combination of our finnish swedish dialect and good skill. If you're actually fluent in a language, understanding often becomes harder the more broken the pronounciation is. For example, I'm fluent in english but sometimes have to talk in english or use english words with friends or accuaintances. If they pronounce that word with a heavy finnish accent, it sounds like a completely different word and it takes me a really long time to understand what the word or sentence is. It's just because my brain is so wired to think of the word in it's "right" way that it doesn't connect with the way people often pronounce it here. It's similar to harder dialects like scottish or something but still different bc the whole word changes when you pronounce it phonetically how it's written (the way finnish is pronounced). So long explanation short, I think her possibly being good at _finswe_ is what made it so difficult.

"Swedish Chef" is basically what English speakers sound like when they try to speak Swedish; partly because they use a lot of sounds that aren't normally used in Swedish, such as the English retroflex R-sound, diphthongs, the different types of "th" sounds, and so on, and this sounds very different from real Swedish. Yes, some Swedish accents use diphthongs and some different R-sounds (almost like a French R-sound), typically in southern Sweden, but not even those accents are really comparable to English sounds.

@@Slixix04 The issue is, she knows too much and too little about the language at the same time, so she tries to guess the words instead of just imitating the sounds that the person before her makes. In Finland, we mostly learn Finnish Swedish that's pronounced differently from standard Swedish, so that's another factor - she guesses the word (incorrectly), and then she pronounces it with a Finnish accent. And that changes the word a lot. This is one context where having no knowledge of the language and just being good at imitating others is an advantage over having basic knowledge of the language.

@@angyliv8040 Así es, tienes razón.Yo solamente saque a colación el tema de los vikingos porque la persona del comentario menciono a las chicas suecas.Es verdad, la piel blanca, cabello rubio, y ojos de color, también se deben a otros pueblos germánicos que llegaron a lo que hoy es España, como por ejemplo los Visigodos o los Celtas.

I think the problem is the German girl because apparently wven though our languages are kind of close the german intonation on the words is very different and i think since she is trying to make it fit german it becomes a different sound

Interesting.. The Swedish "möjlig" is very similar to german "möglich".. "Fjärrkontoll" on the other hand sound like "Fährenkontrolle" ( ferry control, whatever this may be) "remote control "would be "Fernbedienung" in German so not similar at all. Most of the time Italian seems to be incompatible to northern languages ;-)

The finnish and the german girls where the ones that messed the word up most, the german girl put quite some german tone to the word 😆

That Swedish lady at the end was *terrible* at guessing the first two words at least, i haven't gotten further until i was shocked. even as a Norwegian person, that she couldn't guess... utmaning becomes ootmaning "OMG WHAT LANGUAGE IS THIS?!?!".... funnier though

Yeah, I don't get why most of the comments are blaming the finnish girl and saying she messed up everything. I had no trouble understanding her, except maybe one word, meanwhile some of the others were messing up a lot. So many others messed up more and then the swedish girl failed to understand something I also think should've been easy. I guess they had higher expectations for the finnish girl and that's why they're so harsh, but I don't think it's right.
