I think you may have doomed yourself by starting from Finnish. Finnish is such a different language from other European languages represented here. It’s a Uralic language. Then you move to a Nordic language, Germanic, and then romance languages. There is really not a good connection.

It is common that the native Finnish speakers study at school at least Finnish (mother tongue), English (as the first foreign language), and Swedish (as the second domestic language), and sometimes so-called the second foreign language like German or Spanish especially at gymnasium. In a small country it is more need to learn other languages. Besides in Finland all the foreign movies, tv-series and interviews are subtitled, but not dubbed in Finnish, so that you can hear the original dialogue in English, French, German or any other language.

German and Swedish and Germanic, French, Spanish and Italian are Romance. Romance and Germanic could maybe understand a few words as they are distantly related. Finnish is completely different, it’s Uralic but might understand some Swedish words. Some words are shared in a lot of European languages due to history and religion.

I don't think its TOO bad to have finnish here since finnic language speakers have lived next to indo-european speakers as long as people have made bronze. There are a lot of indoeuropean loanwords dating back many millenia. Especially since this is pure 1 word challenge and has nothing to do with grammar.

As a native Hungarian, I would've understood Kala. It's one of the handful of words that are slightly similar between Finnish and Hungarian, so we heard about that. The other one is "hand". I would not understand any other words in Finnish.

In Finland we also say "Joo = yes" in spoken language. (If I remember right, it's over 20 years ago when I was couple months at Budapest). It sound so similar but you can't understand anything! Kösönöm, kiitos! 😊

I heard in Finnish "juna vaunut" means train car. In Hungarian, the exact same thing ("jön a vonat") means "the train is coming". Except in Finnish, "juna" is train, in Hungarian, "jön a" is "coming". So much about sharing words. But both sentences sound about the same.

The most similar to Finish of the five left is Swedish and that just because we have as neighbours lent and borrowed some words. Most similar to Swedish is German. Most similar to German would be Swedish but they are not left so most similar of the three left is French, if only because of lent and borrowed words as neighbours. Both the two left is about as similar to French so anyone of them could work. Spanish and Italian are the most similar of the six languages.

In Germany we have the word "Wattenmeer" (Wadden Sea) which could have helped Jennifer to guess the right word for "Vatten". The "Watten" part is pronounced almost the same as "Vatten" and Wattenmeer is a special type of marine landscape. But that truly was a hard word to guess.

The way I knew it as a German person is because the Swedish power company Vattenfall also operates here in Germany, and I heard at some point that their name means "waterfall".

"Wattenmeer" is not related to any word meaning "water". But really there's a straightforward connection. "Vatten" is a direct cognate to "Wasser" / "water". Any customer of the Swedish electric company "Vattenfall", whose name means "waterfall" should know that.

6:20 it's funny how the subtitles got the first word right, but Meri said it wrong and both got the second word wrong. I've never heard anyone say "sisääntulo", it's "sisäänkäynti" and the second word should be "aula", not "alla" (although that is a word too, but the wrong one). She says "aula" though. "Sisääntulo" is not as common as "sisäänkäynti" but it is not wrong. Maybe travel around Finland, do crossword puzzles or read books in Finnish so you would know your native language better.

Before Latin there are mostly Proto-germanic and Proto-italic. Latin affected everything in Europe. Every modern language has Latin. Before Latin Europe had multitude of regional languages. Similar as some African countries has today.

Vatten is one of those words where meaning changed. Think about the German word: Das Watt. Watt changed the meaning to shallow water Edit: love videos like that btw. Keep doing that ❤ So in this video we go through 3 different language groups and still there are some similarities. Finnish is mean though. I tried to find a connection from German/English/French but couldn’t find anything to hook. But today I learned that there still might be something. I can only learn a language if I do it naturally. I hate learning vocabulary. I prefer to learn it like a baby would do.

They would probably have much more successfull going the other way. The French-German leap would be as had/easy either way, going German to Swedish would be easier than the other way and going Swedish to Finnish would be much easier. But that is more from what they was taught in school than similarity of languages, the average Swede learn more German than the average German learn Swedish and all Finns learn a heck of lot more Swedish than the average Swede learn Finnish.

It seems that the Germans use the words "die Ostsee" and "das Baltisches Meer" for the Baltic Sea. The only Finnish word for the Baltic Sea is "Itämeri" (itä = east, meri = sea), and a Swedish word is "Östersjön" or "Baltiska havet". But naturally the Estonians call the Baltic Sea as "Läänemeri" (lääs = west, meri = sea).

I still don’t get it. First atrio could be patio (but patio also nowadays in Spain is just open place like backyard). Hall is ingresso in Italian. Veranda would be winter garden like the place that has some coverage next to outside area, and the place where you are completely outside is terazza. This game is flawed since it asks people from different language families to guess each other’s words, leading to mismatches. For example, while Finnish and Swedish are from the same region, they belong to entirely different language families-Finnish is Uralic, while Swedish is Germanic. Similarly, German is Germanic and shares some common ground with Swedish, while French, Italian, and Spanish are Romance languages. Just because these are European languages doesn’t make them related. If we did this with Asian languages, it would be like asking a Chinese speaker (Sino-Tibetan) to guess Indonesian words (Austronesian), then having a Burmese speaker (Sino-Tibetan) and speakers of Kyrgyz, Uzbek, and Kazakh (Turkic languages) try as well. The linguistic gaps would make it even harder.

The finnish girl didn't know her own language. The word "halli" went all wrong. The swedish girl had it correct, but she didn't realize that "halli" does NOT mean vestbule. Only a big building like an indoors arena. The Italian girl said "atrio" which is the correct answer to the swedish word "hall". But of course they didn't know that in swedish the word can mean two different things. Even in Finnish that word can also mean "grey seal". ( I am sure she had no idea of that)

"El pasillo" would be more like "the corridor"... I understand "hall" as "entrance" (not as "corridor"), and also through the French term "halle" and similar terms in Germanic languages, I could also understand it as an assembly place. As for "el/la", you don't invariably accompany nouns with their articles in Spanish, although I suppose when learning them they help to identify their grammatical gender. You would not find them with their articles in, for example, a dictionary. As for "comedor", that is the dining room.
