By far the most used word for popcorn in Chile is: Cabritas. The literal translation for Cabritas is tiny goat, (Cabra=goat ita ending=small). I made a search and supposedly it is because they jump or pop uncontrollably like goats.

Soy chilena y muchas de las palabras de los demás paises tambien las ocupamos, como sabana, manta, o cabritas, palomitas para pop corn. Va a depender mucho de la familia y zona (sur o norte). En el caso de Cangrejo, la Jaiba es un tipo de cangrejo muy popular en Chile así que se suele usar más la palabra jaiba para referirnos a un cangrejo, pero en verdad usamos ambas. Muy buen video, me ubiese gustado que la joven chilena ubiese explicado un poco más cada palabra, como las demás chicas, quizas no lo hizo porque los chilenos solemos ser más reservados o tímidos en siertas situaciones en comparación con los demáspaises dehabla hispana.

@@jesusdavis2941 I think Cangrejo is like the international word we recognize and use in a more abstract manner while Jaiba is more tied to traditional chilean interaction with the sea. It's more like it depends on the context in which you are than anything. But also you wouln't call the little ones Jaiba, only the big ones you would eat. It's tied to traditional extraction of jaibas for consumption I'd say.

Chilean here. * Frazada, plumón and edredón are used in Chile. Manta and cobija are not really used, but we understand them. - Frazada can be made of whool, cotton, etc. Some of them can be kind of heavy. It is an old word used anciently in Spain. - Plumón is more of a new word, from the 90s. Plumón contains either feather or any kind of spongy substance in between to retain air. They are light and warm. - Edredón is just like plumón, it is a word taken from french language. - Manta in Chile is a kind of short poncho made of sewing thread. Manta is part of the huaso's traditional costume (huaso is the chilean cowboy) - Tapa can refer anything which goes on top of the blankets. * Cangrejo and Jaiba are both used in Chile. - Cangrejo is just the regular crab, the yellowish-greyish one. While Jaiba is a reddish-orangy type of crab which lives in the cold waters of the Chilean Sea. Jaiba tastes way better than regular crab that's why it was the first word that came to her mind. - In Galicia, northern Spain, they also have Jaibas, they are kind of blueish. - Garaje only when it is enclosed and roofed. Although, we also say Estacionamiento, and it doesn't matter if it's roofed or not. * Mateo and Ñoño. - Mateo is for people who apply themselves in their studies and get great grades, it also apply to people who read a lot and know about many topics. I guess the origin is linked to Saint Matthew. Sometimes mateo is regarded as a compliment. - Ñoño is a kind of pejorative way to refer to studious people because they are typically associated to lacking social skills. * the official name is Placa Patente, meaning licence plate. But we just call it patente (license) when we refer to the plate.

These videos help me understand why I struggle to understand the guys I work with that were from Central America as opposed to Mexico. We were basically taught Mexican Spanish in high school. Our workers from Haiti are even harder to understand, and it's weird, because I would have thought their European language would have been French, but the Spanish-speaking people understand them, it makes me wonder if they're speaking Portuguese. In any event, people being pretty much the same the world over, they're usually talking about some pretty lady friend of theirs, so I suppose I really didn't need to know any Spanish at all to figure that out.

As a native Spanish speaker from Spain I think the best or easiest accent to learn for foreigners is Mexican, they speak really slow and pronounce all the letters and words correctly compared with other Spanish accents. For example in most of Spain people speak faster and we tend to skip or aspire some letters same as most Latin American accents.

En España "Manta" es diferente a "Sábana" . La Manta es gruesa y se usa para cobijarse del frío, mientras que la sábana es fina y puede ser "bajera" ( la que cubre el colchón por higiene) o puede ser "encimera" (que se usa por una cuestión de higiene para separarnos de la manta). Actualmente hay gente que no uso la sábana "encimera" porque no lo ven necesario al dormir con edredón ( que por así decirlo es una "manta" metida dentro de una funda de tela fina) y este puede ser nórdico " más grueso para los días más fríos"

We say both "jaiba" and "cangrejo", but "jaiba" has a bluish hue and is from the ocean, while "cangrejo" can be red, orange, black or gray and also can be found in rivers. We also use "espejuelos" for lenses, "chapa" for license plate and "puntualita" or "puntualito" depending on genre for nerd, it means punctual. I think it is maybe because a nerd is always punctual at the time to do the homework and study. I hope this was usefull for you.

In Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, we call traffic “Tapón” or “tráfico” and this might be weird but we call glasses “espejuelos” but sometimes we call them “lentes”. “Gafas” is more like sunglasses to us.

Wow! So, that's where we got our term for glasses (5:11) in my regional language in the Philippines, Iloco/Ilocano. We say/pronounce it something like "anchokos". We just smashed the syllables together, I guess. It makes much more sense now 'cause the hispanic "J" can sound almost halfway to a "K" sound. And we sometimes apply/substitute it to other hispanic loanwords with the original spanish "J" sound such as "Kusto/usto" from "Justo" and etc... Otherwise, we just use the aspirated "H" sound as well.

In Dominican Republic we say "po-con" or "rositas de maiz" for popcorn. For us, "Jaiba" is the fresh water crabs. "Cangrejo" is the salt water crab. For kite we say "Chichigua". Soy chileno y no explicó bien algunas palabras o uso unas que no usamos: - Cangrejo sí se usa. Jaiba es un tipo de cangrejo que acá en Chile es popular. - No usamos Garaje NUNCA. Se usa estacionamiento. - Mateo no es tan usada en verdad (antiguamente sí). Ahora se usa nerd o ñoño. I am Chilean and I’ve never heard someone saying “tapa” for a duvet, we use that word mostly for bottles or things that must be closed. And also we say “garage” (sounds “garách) not “garaje”, I mean we understand it of course but it would call my attention because it is different from what I’m use to. I think “Mateo” in Chile comes from “Mate”, which in the countryside or old people would use to name the head.

I agree with Colombia with garage and stock rooms. In the Philippines, garage is garahe and stock room is bodega. For eye glasses, we usually say salamin, lentes is for lens like camera lens. Hahaha funny thing in the Philippines, matricula means tuition fee, so placa works.

Being from the States, I grew up learning "Mexican" Spanish. We always laugh about how different "Mexican" is from other "Spanish". We have a saying: "That's Mexican S*&t", when it's a word or phrase that makes no sense in Spanish but makes PERFECT sense in Mexican. I LMAO watching this video.

I had friend co workers who were from these different countries. One day, they realized I was unable to distinguish the difference in their dialects. I responded with….”Well, if I don’t understand any of these languages, how would I be able to differentiate the dialects?” They realized what I was talking about. They understand the major and subtle differences because there is a base language. But when I heard all of them, I couldn’t tell any difference. I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful or ignorant. They didn’t think such of me. I enjoyed learning when they would teach me words. I never could roll my ‘R’s. They would always crack up laughing.

2:18 cangrejo is the standard word. 'Jaiba' is a type of aquatic crab with a pair of legs modified as paddles, for swimming. In US is called 'blue ceab' (Callinectes sapidus). In Puerto Rico we call it 'cocolía'. There's also a blue land crab (Cardisoma guanhumi) that we call 'juey'.

En españa la palabra lentes tambien existe pero es una palabra más antigua. Al atasco tb se le puede decir caravana. Garaje es un garaje de toda la vida para el coche si que se puede utilizar para meter cosas pero principalmente es para el coche. Y para lo la cochera apenas se utiliza, de donde yo soy es más para el transporte público cuando acaban es a donde lo llevan es decir a las cocheras. La sabana es lo fino lo que cubre el colchon. Primero se pone la sabana bajera, luego la encimera, luego puedes poner depende de lo friolera que seas una colcha (es mas decorativo), edredon o nordico (este es el plumas que metes dentro de unas sabanas para protegerlo). Y tambien puedes poner mantas que son gruesas. Las mantas de sofa mas finas son mantitas.
