Pretty easy for native speakers. #3's British accent is somewhat okay, but she makes grammatical mistakes that give it away. Actually, most of the non-native speakers make little grammar mistakes that give it away more than accent sometimes - "I pretty love drinking hot tea on rainy days". Also, non-native speakers seem to have a lot of trouble pronouncing R+L together. Words like "world" and "girl" are dead giveaways. #1 has a decidedly American accent though, and perfect grammar.

So many new Americans on the show! South Korea must be a popular destination for US Expats! I’m not used to seeing strangers who she didn’t previously met, physically getting close at the end, it must be an European thing. It was a fun episode!

English is a very easy language to learn, in Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese there are genders for all the words and you need to combine them with the right termination, not mentioned the right tense and person of the verb! In Portuguese there are words written in a way but they sound completly different as in English like the l sounding like u and sometimes sounding like the "real" l, I think French has this kind of written in a way but spoken on other way...

She did very well, and if you look at her final guesses you can see just how close she came to getting them ALL correct: #1 - Guess was Germany - Actual was Austria - Both are German speaking neighboring countries - so the base language was correct. #2 - Guess was Native English - Actual was Native English American - had just spent a weekend together. #3 - Guess was a disbelieving England - Actual was Italy - The only really odd-ball person but totally understandable given her mixed heritage of northern Italy. #4 - Guess was Spain - Actual was Spain - Rather obvious. #5 - Guess was a last moment guess of France - Actual was France - There were some clues that she must have gotten just by listening. #6 - Guess was Russia - Actual was Belarus - The two official languages are Belarusian and Russian and are neighboring countries. So, except for #3, she got not only the correct language but placed the person in an area that, at one time, was part of the parent language country. Plus she got the native speaker. That is very good, and she's American. In terms of matching languages: #1 - German - German #2 - Native English Speaker - Native English Speaker #3 - Not English ? - Italian #4 - Spanish - Spanish #5 - French - French #6 - Russian - Russian Outstanding Job ! 84% correct.

Interesting. Apart from #1 and #2, everyone else clearly has a non-native accent. I have to give it to #3 and #5 though. I speak both languages and work extensively with French and Italian natives, and I still couldn't tell you where these two ladies were from based on accent alone. Usually the French accent is obvious to me from the way they form their vowels (especially the O's) and the lilt of their speech (gravitating toward the end of the phrase/word) and mouth tension. But this person didn't have what to me are defining features.

I think there were some hints apparent in sentence construction or word choice. Tea had a very good American accent, but no native English speaker would say, "My favorite food, like crispy." I wonder if she was going to say that she liked "crisps," but then remembered that she was supposed to be an American who would say "chips" and tripped herself up. Sofia's tell was when she said "I pretty love drinking hot tea" and "I have lived very lazy, cozy." Those just aren't natural English constructions. "Guadalupe's" backstory was a pretty clever way to explain the accent, but saying that she spoke Catalan made said story highly unlikely. Lini's and Yuliya's accents were thick enough to give them away.

As an American, I think it was obvious. I wouldn’t think anyone except number 2 was a native English speaker. Number 1 wasn’t bad but some of her phrasing was weird and she overdid it a little. What’s a crispy?I think if she was probably nervous and otherwise would have been more convincing. Although, we do have a Chicano English accent in the USA the ladies don’t have it. She was smart to try to pass for a Chula though. I also agree with Sadie about the nuances of English grammar. I write for a living. I have noticed on this channel that a lot of the participants make small grammar mistakes even if they speak well enough to be easily understood. For example I hear people using “more” and also adding er to adjectives. Like saying more prettier when it’s supposed to be more pretty OR prettier. Also if a word has more than two syllables you can’t add er or est. You have to use more or most. It’s incorrect grammar to say beautifuler or beautifulest. Also it’s good, better and best. Not more better or gooder. A lot of times it’s the little things like phrasing or word choices that give people away as non-native when it comes to languages.

It strikes me as weird how people think about the "difficulty" of learning a given language because you can't really just place languages in a ranking from easiest to most difficult. What really matters is how close or far removed is the language from your own or other languages you know. For me as a Norwegian, Danish or Swedish are extremely easy languages to learn. English is also not that bad and neither is German, just to name a few. This just comes down to our languages being somewhat connected and related, however learning languages such as mandarin, japanese, korean or any south-east Asian languages would be much harder. Yet a native Japanese speaker will probably find Chinese and Korean much easier to learn than European languages.

Can't help knowing other people, but for these kind of videos it would be really nice if there was a way to negate giving a part or even the entire video away. It did happen before a couple times, actually. I'd suggest a voice changer, but at the same time I like the natural way these videos are in. People just giggling and smiling and trying to mask themself by changing up things. I guess the only way to keep it natural is by inviting an actual new person to be the guesser. It was a fun video regardless of it being kinda over in the first couple minutes though.

Should have gotten a Singaporean to confuse her abit more. In Singapore we’re taught & use standard British English since young. We learnt at the same rate as we learned our native language. In all subjects except language lessons, we’re taught in English. English here is considered as one of the official languages. It’s used in many situations. We use in school, work, daily lives & even at home. Some of us even use English more than our own native language. We even have our own English based creole called Singlish. So, our usage of English can vary from super proper English to Singlish based on the setting we’re in.
