Vietnam's way of naming countries in Europe is quite complicated. Due to historical factors. First we use different phonetic transcriptions for Chinese characters. Like some words in Europe and each country has a slightly different pronunciation. At first we used Chinese documents to know about Western countries, and we ourselves took notes in Chinese characters. Therefore, some country names have been transliterated into Vietnamese after being transliterated into Chinese. For example, France is read by the Chinese as "Fa Ran Xi" and written as 法兰西, but we read the word 法兰西 as Phap Lan Tay and shorten it as "Phap". Similar to England (Ang Land - Eng Country), Germany (Deutschland - Duc Country), Italia ("I Ta Lia" in Chinese and "Y Dai Loi" in Vietnamese) Quoc 国 /Nuoc means country. Some of us borrowed some French words to say the names of countries, for example Ê Cốt (Ecosse),... Some are named by us based on our geographical location with our country, for example Nam Dương (South Ocean) means Indonesia because they are located on the south coast of Vietnam. Or the US we call Hoa Kỳ 華旗 (Flowers Flag - Because in Vietnam people look at the stars on the American flag and think they are flowers, because East Asians think that a star is round and not five-pointed like the West).

The fact that people often groups Vietnam in a group with other South East Asia countries due to its geographic location. But as a Vietnamese, I believe that you will never see any similar between VN and Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia about language or culture. If you group Vietnam + China + Korea + Japan in one show, then you will realize there are the similar countries' name pronunciation. i.e. -England (Vietnamese: Nước Anh/Anh Quốc - Chinese: 英国(Ying Guo) - Korean: 영국(Yeong Kuk) - Japanese: 英国(Ing Koku)). Hello I’m Thai, in my opinion Thai girl in this video misunderstood in some word. Actually Thai language is so difficult, many Thai people themselves also agree at this point. Especially, the advanced and formal Thai words, many people used them wrong. That Thai girl said “united kingdom” in Thai is “อังกฤษ”(Un-grid), it is totally incorrect because “อังกฤษ” means only England or English. But the united kingdom in Thai language, the correct answer is สหราชอาณาจักร (Sa-ha-raj-cha-ar-na-chak).

You should bring on a Cambodian speaker with Thai and French, because then you'll notice how they're all connected through history and colonialism. For example, in Khmer, we say: Prateis A'merique (America) or Saha Rot A'merique (United States of America), Chakphop Angklais (United Kingdom), Earlong (Ireland), Allemung (Germany) - basically name of countries are borrowed from French, while a lot of other words for kingdoms and states are Pali/Sanskrit words (similar to Thai and Lao).

For example, "Ý" in Vietnamese means "meaning"/"opinion"/"purpose"/... and also means Italy; "Anh" (often) means "older brother" or male person around the age of older sibling, and also means England. Therefore, if the context is not clear enough, the word "nước" is added; if the context is clear enough, it's completely fine to skip the word "nước", but it's also formal to add the word "nước" (even though it's redundant). In case of "Việt Nam" and "Nhật Bản" (Japan), it's the same idea applied in reverse; when the context is clear enough, those names are shortened to "Việt" and "Nhật". By the way, for the country names mentioned above, in most cases the context is clear enough. For "Úc" (Australia), it's not a common word so in most (if not all) cases, Vietnamese can understand that without the word "nước". By the way, if you notice how Vietnamese people refer to eachother's name, you may notice people whose names end with "Anh", or people with similar names (in the same group), often get referred with an additional word from their name, to avoid confusion. For example: A group of friends consists of 6 people, whose full names are: Nguyễn Mai Anh, Trần Thị Liên, Lê Ngọc Linh, Phạm Khánh Linh, Hoàng Thị Mai, Vũ Thị Mai. Also it’s good to know that the Chinese translation was mostly phonetic conversion straight from original language, rather than English that’s why some of them sounds very different than English. I think España > 西班牙 > Tây Ban Nha is quite clever and Spanish "ñ" is similar to Vietnamese "nh" and Spain is located in the West, hence Tây.
