I picked up the Rossi 2/23 I’ve shot thousands of rounds (factory and reloaded) through it without any issues. I would mix .357 and 38s together and it shot them fine together. I replaced the ejector spring and the empty brass falls 2-3 feet from me now. I also replaced the plastic follower with a stainless one. It’s an amazing reliable lever gun.

I'll take the R92 any day. My wife and I competed in Cowboy Action Shooting, and both use Rossis. She, the 357 rifle, me the 45 Colt saddle ring carbine, both stainless. They are quite accurate when fed ammunition they like. I handload and cast my own bullets, so have a lot more control of what I use, and we have won more than a few long-range side matches with her 357 shooting 38 Specials loaded with 160 grain RNFP bullets. Polished the internals, trimmed the ejector spring, and they're so smooth only one finger is required to run the action. Never had anyone with a Henry beat me in a rifle stage or long range match.

You mentioned cowboy action a couple of times. We use pistol caliber rifles in SASS competitions and .38 Special is the most popular cartridge. With the exception of the Uberti 1866 most of the rifles are .357s. We see a lot of new shooters show up with carbines that have a 7-9 round magazine capacity. While legal, they are an impediment since we almost always shoot ten rounds out of the rifle. We start with the hammer down on an empty chamber so “nine plus one” is not an option. If the capacity is less than ten the shooter either has to reload the rifle “on the clock” or they will take five second penalties for the unfired rounds. The Rossi 92 is the most affordable rifle in the sport. If Ruger can get the Marlin 1894 back to market it should cost about the same as the Henry. The Henry Big Boy is well known thanks to Henry Repeating Arms’ marketing. I don’t see many shooters using them in matches. The top rifles are reproductions of the Winchester 1873 and 1866 rifles, mostly Ubertis. Their mechanically simple “toggle link” actions can be made to run very quickly and easily. They are also expensive and most shooters have some work done to them which raises the cost even more. Shooting steel with pistol caliber lever action rifles is a lot of fun. Thanks for posting the video.

Thanks for watching and for all the info abee! Uberti seems to be very popular with cowboy action shooters and from what I hear, Italy is producing some good stuff. Lets see if Ruger starts making some of the Marlins in pistol calibers. Hopefully they'll keep the price point reasonable.

The leather causing rust is not a myth. I experienced it myself. The thing is, I used mine a lot and got some sweat on the leather... that apparently was enough as it rusted the hell out of my lever - this was on a Marlin 94 that I used for Cowboy Action Shooting. I currently have 3 Rossi R92's - 16" 44 Mag, 20" 45 Colt and 24" rifle .357 Mag =- all blued. Love them. Each is sighted differently = the 45 Colt is stock, the 44 has a small Crimson Trace red dot on a Steves Gunz scout mount and the 357 Mag has a nice Marble Arms tang sight with a sight blank in the stock sight dovetail.

Leather rusting the metal has several remedies. First use good VEG TAN leather not the chrome tan stuff. Vegetable tanned leather has no salts and will not rust the metal. Second any material can cause rust if it gets and stays wet. Your sweat alone will not make leather so wet that it will not dry quickly and not damage the gun. Both my Rossi 92 in 454 and my son's 44mag can be loaded and unloaded either by the King's gate or the tube. Also you can mount a scout scope on the Rossi. Very handy that way.

Regarding the Rossi...The loading issues are noticeable when you start getting it to the max capacity because the springs (From the rumor mill) are standard length for all thier models, meaning the 24" 20" 16" all use the same spring. Dont know for sure if thats absolutely true, seems to be based on some videos of people who have varied length models comparing them. The standard practice has been to cut off an inch or more depending on how they seem to feed for you at max capacity. Some have cut over 3" some even 4" depending on what they shoot out of. Mine is a stainless 20" and I ended up cutting about 2.5' till I got it where i wasn't fighting it. I also replaced the tube follower with a stainless one replacing the orange plastic one that was standard. I also replaced the extractor spring. ( what a job that ended up being) and polished up every mated surface after dry running it a couple thousand times to find the wear spots. I rubbed synthetic moly grease on all those areas and let it sit for a while, overnight or longer because molybdenum tends to impregnate metal. wiped it all clean, put it back together and its silky smooth. None of that noticeable clanking sounds that you'll hear straight out of the box. No hangs up or hesitations. It feeds reloaded .38 led round nose just as easy as it does fully jacketed 158gr or semi jacketed. 357. Either has been working just peachy. polished the ramp just to prevent that being an issue because apparently it has been in the past with them. Totally satisfied with it at this stage of ownership.

The original winchester 92 loading from the gate I structions stated to use the "next inline cartridge" to push the preceeding cartridge into the rifle. two handed hold method. This method prevents hangups, as you were experiencing. I have many lever actions, Marlins, Henry's, Winchesters, Rossi 92s etc.. using this method my grandfather taught me makes for smooth eas, quick side gate loading. I imagine there are vids here that show that a dual method. Don't go changing springs etc... give it a try.. the old cowboys knew how 😊

R92 is an exact copy of John Browning designed Winchester 92, originally chambered in 44/40 , 38/40 and 32/20 Replaced by the Winchester 94 because of it's capability of using rifle length ammo, particularly the revolutionnary 30/30.16' barrelTrapper model, 20" barrels are the carbine model, and 24" barrels make it a rifle. I have Stainless models in .357 , 44 mag, and 45 colt. Indestructble, functional and all you need if you can shoot well. I have both the Henry Big Boy classic in 45 colt and the Rossi R92 stainless steel in .357 with the cherry red wood finish. First the Henry, it simply is a better quality rifle, the fit and finish is second to none and the action is buttery smooth right out of the box. Henry warranties it's rifle for life no matter who owns it. The downside to my Henry is that it needs lots of cleaning and polishing after every use to keep it looking gorgeous and as mentioned in this video, it's heavy, but helps it when firing the 45 colt +P buffalo deer grenade. My Rossi, while not as good as a Henry, mine is very well put together and I have zero complaints about fit and finish. Unlike the Henry, the Rossi only has a one year warranty, so make sure you use it so if there is something wrong it can get taken care of. It's a much lighter rifle and those magnum rounds are felt, but not bad. Because it's very light, it also had better handling. The loading gate has sharp edges and because it's quite a bit stiffer, it can tear your fingers up when new and the rounds are a bit harder to get in. This can be fixed by doing two things, one is to replace the follower, it will slide better, the other thing is the spring, it does not need to be replaced, you just trim a few inches off and the loading becomes much better, the spring is stupidly long on the Rossi. The Henry will set you back about $1000. The Rossi will set you back about $750. Both are well worth the price and you can't go wrong picking either one or both.

Claims it shoots high at 25m, in the lowest notch on the rear sight. Tried to tell him about the standard of aiming a tad low up close, and point of aim around 75m. And a touch high at 100m with Buckhorn sights. But he just hadda have a dot sight. Got downright ornery about it. 😠 But then again, he's much younger, and a real AR15 fanatic, with all of his long guns are optic equipped. And most younger guys are the same. They don't know how to shoot iron sights. Optical sights are the thing today. I'm just old school. What the younger guys call a Fudd. But I don't mind. And among my long guns, there is an AR15 in there. Of course, it's outfitted with carry handle rear sight and the tall post f2 sight up front. Fudd? Perhaps, but I out shoot my buddy with his scopes and dots pretty regular. Reckon it's like the old saying. "It's the Indian, not the arrow." 😏

Rossi R92 leaves the factory unfinished. When you finish the polishing of the proper places you can cycle the lever with your pinky. I noticed the rifle left your cheek each time you cycled it. Perhaps for filming reasons. Reloading can be enhanced with elbow grease as well. Sanding and polishing is something the R92 needs at startup. I cannot complain about its accuracy, despite my negative comments. My .357 reloads leave a 16.5 inch barrel at nearly 2000 fps compared to my Taurus 627 with 6.5 inch barrel at 1400 fps. He should work with the short stock for a while, he may find it suits him better... most factory guns are longer in the stock than is ideal...
@texmexshoots
@texmexshoots 7 ай бұрын
That's not a bad idea. However I've already swapped the stock for him. It was a relatively easy swap. However he kept the shorter one so he could always swap them back. I will say, whomever shortened the stock did an excellent job of replacing the recoil pad.

Yes, Rossi and Henry are in the same class of lever gun manufacturing. Problem comes when people try to put Henry in the same quality classification as Marlin. Can anyone tell me why Henry will not make one solitary lever gun chambered in whatever center fire round they choose with just side gate loading? Henry will not make one lever gun with side gate only even though they know that there is a market out there screaming for it!! Henry does not make sense!!
@texmexshoots
@texmexshoots 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching Kevin. I will say that when Henry began making the side gate loaders, I was surprised to see they still left the magazine tube loading ability. I figured they may have thought it is still a safe way to empty the magazine without having to cycle all the rounds. I suppose they could manufacture a different magazine tube without the loading hole and a standard cap for those who want that style.
@kevinrollman3101
@kevinrollman3101 9 ай бұрын
@@texmexshoots That sounds reasonable to me. I always thought that perhaps Henry had manufactured thousands of the magazine tubes with the loading feature and will not contemplate manufacturing any Henry models side gate only until the supply of tube loading magazines are completely gone. Thanks for responding.

Certainly. A person's budget will ultimately dictate the purchase. But price can also be variable depending on model and condition. That being said, the Henry's are consistently more expensive.

If you think that Henry octagon barrel rifle is heavy, you ought to try carrying a Shiloh Sharps 4570, 4590 or 45110 buffalo rifle with the heavy bull barrels. My 30" rifle weight about 12.5 lbs while my 34" barrel weights in around 14 lbs. Try that one on for size after a long days hunt, humping it with ammo belt with 20 rounds, back to the truck thats 1.5 - 2 miles. Would make Matthew Quigley proud. Time to cowboy up son.

Yeah Denis, that sounds like a feat. The last long hiking hunts I made were years ago. Mostly in West Texas on a property I had access to back then. Near Balmorhea. I would lug around an old 7mm Weatherby Mag with the classic wood stock. Not a light rifle but nothing crazy heavy like yours. Shooting mule deer or aoudad from hill to hill. We would hike miles a day. But the real work was carrying out the game. However I'll be the first to admit that now days I would happily take an ATV. 😁

Well Denis, I'm going to try this reply again since youtube seemed to lose my last one. First of all, thanks for watching! Your rifle sounds mightily heavy. Did you at least have a strap or scabbard for her? I did many hiking hunts in my 20's and 30's. Back then I had access to a large property near Balmorhea State Park. My father and I would hunt mule deer and aoudad. It would be a multi mile hike with some climbing. I carried a Weatherby 7mm mag wood stock rifle. Not a lite rifle but certainly not nearly as heavy as yours. The real challenge challenge was getting any game we took back to the truck after gutting. Especially if the game was high on a hill. So I've cowboy-ed up for many hunts over the years. However I will admit now that I wouldn't hesitate to use an ATV. 😁

@texmexshoots Good morning to you sir. To answer your question, no, I laid that Sharps over my shoulder and humped it all the way. Now, to be hones,t that was over 20years ago and since In my past, it was an airborne Infantry soldier, I never gave it a second thought. I do now that I am 71 years old. I'm not the stout lighter knot I once was, and that's for sure and for certain. Keep on trucken sir. Enjoy living while you are still young enough to enjoy our beloved sport. I have a couple of Henry's in 45 colt, one round barrel the other the color case hardened, with octagon barrel. It's a beautiful piece for sure. Thanks for the response. I am sorry I didn't respond earlier. I just saw your response.

Thanks for watching Pete! I think one of the reasons was for a rancher/cowboy to have a pistol and rifle in the same caliber. May not be as necessary in our modern day, but they are still lots of fun! Plus, with the right loading, some pistol calibers shot out of a carbine have enough energy to take down deer and other game.

If you use veg tan leather you’ll be fine as long as you don’t store it wet. Chrome tanned leather is processed with potentially corrosive chemicals but higher quality leather should be fine. Your main enemy is moisture and salts from your skin. That scabbard looks like veg tan.
