Probably very short reflow envelope (to save energy) and very small amount of flux. Usually flux is mixed in solder paste and applied by stencil on PCB pads before placing elements. Low temperature (sensitive pads on black PCB laminate) and short reflow soldering.

What your saying about business is so true. My mom who is in real estate always puts her clients first and will go out of the way to try and help. There was a situation where the buyers had been willing to pay the agreed price but the property appraised just short of the price. Both agents verbally agreed to both give up a little commission so the deal would go through and everyone would be happy. At closing the other agent had changed her mind, saying it wasn't in writing and she wanted her full commission. Of course, both the sellers and the Buyers are now in a hard spot. My mom to make the deal go through ate the difference and she was the only one to give up a chunk of her commission for the deal to go through. When those sellers decided to sell and upgrade again They did not choose to work with that greedy agent. Instead their future business went to my mom because they saw what the agent on the otherwise of the table did for her clients. Because of how my mom does business she gets so many referrals that the business my mom does in 1 month is about what the average agent does in 1 year.

The whole "hold down a button to fix the device" convo... The shop I worked at years ago had a reasonable diagnostic fee, which would be the only thing charged to the customer if we managed to fix the computer while trying to figure out what was wrong with it. (if I recall, it was around $40... just high enough to encourage the college students nearby to not flood us with PEBKAC issues.) If it was a legit problem that needed us to do real work to fix, then we'd get approval from the customer first, then waive the diagnostic fee and charge the normal hourly repair rate + parts.

I once "worked"(it was a student job) in the service of an Electronics discounter here in Germany. The whole economics of the franchise was explained to the staff. One part was how much aquireing one customer costs. Aquireing a customer costs 2000€ and loosing a customer is especially hard as these might take 5 to 10 customers with them. So the "service" is the last chance to save the company from loosing a customer. Also customers that complain are worth pure gold, as these are customers who allow the company to keep them. So not charging for a coffee or for pressing a button is clearly a smart investment in aquireing a live long customer.

I 100% agree, the repeat customers you get from just being a decent human is infinitely more valuable than trying to squeeze as much as you can out of each transaction. The amount of repeat new customers we get from giving genuine advice and help is crazy (I work for one of the biggest UK photo/ video retail specialists). My customers are always surprised at the things I'll do for them that I think should just be standard. As I always say to them, "I'd rather make less money now by selling you the RIGHT equipment/ giving better advice, because I know you'll keep coming back," and they always do. 😊

What you are saying about luck is so true. I see people complain about having bad luck all the time and then they make decisions that are either immediately poor, or only in the context of the short term. If you want to have good luck in the future, you need to make decisions with the future in mind. Things tend to work out when you make good decisions. Make poor decisions and things may not work out very often. It may feel like luck is not on your side.

From the guy who works at a PCBA EMS company, that shitty solder joints look like solder graping. That is what happens when the reflow is too hot too fast. The flux burnt out before the metal powder actually hit liquidus stage. So because the flux is out to prevent further oxidation, the metal is not properly reflow or melted and it has already cooled down, preventing further and proper solder formation.

Quick profit vs a potential stream of repeating customers isn't a gamble I ever took in repair either.

That's a damn fine business practice, treat the customer as you would want someone else to treat your grandparent in a transaction. Fairly, honestly and sometimes charitably. Good will makes for a lot more future business than fleecing every single penny you can will. I never dealt with component level repairs but when it came to PC diagnosis and repair, I never charged for the diagnosis, everyone else charged $25-$50 for it. Generally what the computer brought to me needed was a windows reinstall and instead of charging $50-$100 for that task I'd charge $25, most of the time taken by the install is completely unattended and doesn't require me at all so charging anything more seemed unfair. Those two things got me a ton of word of mouth good will recommendations and brought in far more money than charging the going rate ever would have.

They've done every non-warranty service to every car I've owned since then and I couldn't possibly count how many people I've sent there. Could they have charged me more for that first repair they did for me? Sure. But they wouldn't have got the loyalty they got from me. I don't know where I'm going to take my cars when Wally retires, but I hope he can find someone and train them with his business model.

That person charging 180 dollars for an smc reset, what a shitty thing to do, it doesn't matter that they have an expensive machine and can afford it, they won't return if they figure it out, and instead of potentially making several thousand from returning custom, he'll only make that 180, and others will think they're trash for that act and will lose even more potential custom. I've been in that situation where it was a stupid easy fix and I haven't charged for knowing the fix, instead I've just said if you insist on paying for my time, pay it to a charity of their choice or I'll take 10 quid as a tip, the smile on their faces and goodwill is worth a thousand-fold what my hourly rate gives me. Our industry gets enough bad rep, we don't need any more from shysters like that, and it is just basic human decency to not screw over anyone, nevermind the people who came to you in good faith and trust and at the end of the day pay your wages.

My trick for stripped screws... Take a flat rubber band and place it on the screw head then push the screwdriver in. The rubber gets in the head and it grips the head and screwdriver, works most times.

My mid-2014 15" Retina MBP de-soldered itself a month ago, about six months after I bought it. High-resolution photo editing apparently was more than it could take. I took it to a repair shop just up the street from my house: they now find themselves unable to remain in business due to our CCP virus lockdown and they're shipping the broken machine back to me. I considered the 16" MBP as a replacement. I like the BSD core and the 16:10 aspect ratio display (I don't like the high gloss, I have mirrors if I need to see my reflection) but I couldn't bring myself to reward Apple for shoddy workmanship, poor engineering, and opposition to upgrade and repair. I like ThinkPads. My first laptop was a 12" IBM model I bought from a friend. I'm now using a secondhand T420, running Debian. It does fine for most things now, but lacks the horsepower for photo editing. Also, FOSS photo editing tools are behind the times and photo printing is hideous. I ended up ordering a 15.6" ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2, i9 9750H 6-core CPU, 4k OLED touch display, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, GTX1650 w/4MB VRAM, Windows 10 Pro, 3 years depot warranty, 3 years drop & spill coverage, 9.25% California sales tax (gotta keep Gov. Newsom in hair gel) for only about $180 more than base model 16'" MBP before AppleCare and sales tax. I'll use Win10 for the proprietary software and Linux in a VM for the rest.

The bit about charging for simple fixes reminds me of when I was young, and my HTC Incredible got stuck in a boot loop. Tried all I could to fix it, and to recover my data, and couldn't figure it out myself. Took it to a Verizon store w/ my grandmother (who at the time, paid my phone bill), explained the issue, explained that I wanted my data recovered. The dude behind the counter just went into the boot menu right there and then, did a factory reset, and handed it back. Didn't fix the issue. Didn't recover data. I guess at least they didn't charge for it. (Later got a new phone, and rooted the Incredible for the hell of it to tinker with it) And again reminds me when I was _really_ young, and accidentally changed my LG Voyager's language to Spanish, and had to take it to the store. Again, no charge for fix, gladly.

i buy and keep spare drivers/bits so i can solder them to stripped out screws and get them out, then i replace the screw. this is a separate service i charge and even have other repair companies come to me to preform this. im thinking about buying a battery terminal welder for this purpose, and then i wont have to keep buying driver bits i could just use some rod.

Hello Sir Mr Louis, YES, you do have HDR, and that makes the picture way better. However now and then I am curious what the soldering actions look without a microscope view? Could you switch back to normal camera view now and then? BTW I really agree with you concerning the "free repairs" now and then.

Lemme guess. Components are soldered with that extremely low temp solder that almost melts just above room temperature? That some uses to make desoldering easier by setting it in the sunlight and watch everything fall off the board. That one that makes products so extremely fragile the components rattle around if one moves the computer while it's on due to the heat it produces?

I presume you have eventual issues with the HDMI on the Microscope cam, have you tried switching it to a standard (not right angle) cable and zip-tying the cable to the body of the camera with a cable loop? Might reduce the strain on the connector?

If it's the Apple earphones they tend to build up a bit of ear wax in the metal mesh. An easy way to clean it is to heat it up with a hairdryer but don't get it too hot and use an old toothbrush to brush out the wax. If you're willing to take the risk and go the more complex rought take out the metal mesh and thoroughly wash it in hot water but be warned its easy to rip the metal mesh and its a pain in the ass to put back in.

If they're wired headphones then it's a break in one of the wires in the cable. Try using a multimeter to check continuity if possible, you'll probably find that the break is just before the strain relief on the jack that plugs into the device end, as that is the fault 90% of the time.

Very clean rework, but I'm not sure about your diagnosis of poor assembly I've seen a lot of qfn solder joints before, and that one is not especially poor, it appears to be IPC class 2 (bit hard to tell on the high density footprint). The failure is more than likely due to board flex, vibration or thermal stress. As to why the joints appear poor under magnification I feel this is largely down to the perception of non shiny joints which is largely due to the lead free solders that modern production facilities are required to use for consumer applications these days. Personally I would avoid reworking lead free soldering with leaded solder (based on your product recommendations I assume it was the kester 63/37) without cleaning off the old solder as mixing solder alloys in that manner can cause reliability issues. But the use of hot air after iron soldering is a very good idea as it allows the solder to recrystallise in a consistent manner and removes thermal stresses as long as the cooling is not too sudden.

I love this channel because of you and the entertainment and value you bring. If you go into business for short term you will fail ultimately and never get into the green consistently. You provide a very specific specialized service. Very specific, detailed and skilled that has a premium to it. But your business model is long lasting, very long lasting. The quality of service is better than the price. People come to you because they know you are honest and provide high quality service. And these 2 ideas are spread by word of mouth, and maybe cards or emails or such that are cheap. But if you put up a billboard for 2k a month saying you provide the best service, honest and quality. People will see it and think it's a joke and won't go to you. Being forward and teaching the customer about their products and your service you render and being honest about it all goes such a long way and builds trust and respect between the 2. I had customers come back to ask me specific questions about products and what they should get because I gave them good advice before. It's a nice balance between selling but just helping. A lot of these customers even tho they didn't buy anything the first time, they bought stuff the 2nd, 3rd 4th or 5th after, because I helped them where needed and didn't try to make a one time sell. And if we didn't carry the specific item they asked but had something better I would teach them why, but let them make their own choice and say to maybe think about it if it's something normally in stock. Most went out bought the garbage item, and came back and bought the one we sold. I wasn't rude, I just instructed on why. And they acknowledged I was right, which people hate doing. Little free services or things we do go a long way. Like someone buys a new pair of laces at my store, I offer to change them out for them. Which takes 2 minutes of my time but added value to the business and customer. A great small business understands these principles and knows that saying no or sorry we can't help but providing info on how to get the right stuff, goes a long way compared to trying to advertise and make quick sells. And it makes work way better. People came in and knew my name and asked for me personally, and teaching my employees under me the same values and ideas on how to help instead of sell, allowed me to step more into managing associates. Where it's an ongoing circle of business and mutual respect.

I totally get that business point of view and it reminds me of a one shoemaker. I just happened to need an extra hole in my belt and I went to the shoemaker close by because I don't have the tool to make holes in leather. 2 second job and I was of course ready to pay something but he denied to take any money for it. Since then I've been a customer and recommended the place whenever someone has needed shoemaker's services. He has probably made 500€ because he denied to charge couple euros way back.

Hey Louis, after years of wastching you, how you treat your customers and employees is obvious. The fact that you sent the staff to Japan and sat home and did the work, that’s saying something. You walk the walk as far as I can tell. If I can use your services, you can bet I’ll be calling you. I’m happy to actually pay more when I know a business cares about people first. Louis may get rich in the future because you’re doing it right, and as far as I’m concerned you lift people up with you, and you don’t step on their heads with golf spikes. Enjoy as much money as you can legally and ethically gather

I design/manufacture a lot of high-reliability industrial electronics and that does not look all that bad. Room for improvement, perhaps but nothing to make fun of IMHO. Drag soldering by hand will always yield a much different look than solder paste that has run through a reflow line.
