This technique is the really essence of cutting a clearcoat. I remember those big 200-220mm Whool Pads where used daily in the valeting process on used cars. Unfortunately, the finishing process was always dispensed with afterwards 😅. Thx for sharing this

You're welcome - but don't forget, clearcoat is still solvent based. The colour beneath is now water based, that's all. The thing is, most clearcoats have become softer (technically less dense) than they were 15+ years ago and that has coincided with orbital polishers getting more powerful (primarily through going to a larger orbit). As Kelly says in the video, that's why it's possible to use an orbital polisher for cutting on most cars today.

I learned on a rotary way before orbital polishers were available. If you can use a rotary properly, you’ll have no issues with an orbital. With a rotary you have to understand the paint and the surfaces you are working on or you can inflict serious paint damage. Buff near or on edge wrong-paint gone. Those were the days.

Great video , I had a Seat Leon not so long along , I had to make it a 3 stage due to how aggressive the cut was it was quicker to have a medium cut or stage 2 rather than spending time with too many passes jumping straight to fine . Gives my confidence to see you doing. I’d also like to applaud the purple wool pad it got me out of a tricky job only yesterday on a MGB Roadster . I could have done with that old skool pad last week doing an S Class Mercedes with 250K miles and deep defects. Paint was rock hard and i had no really heavy twisted wool pads. I ended up having to do 2/3 hits with the LC purple wool and 3D 510. to get about 90% defect removal. Followed up with the orange SDO CCS pad on forced rotation and 3D ONE and car looked stunning afterwards. I cant even find that yellow wool pad in the UK otherwise id buy a couple just for future emergency

Now THIS is very interesting to me, as I have a VW Tiguan in black pearl and the clear on that is harder than Rocky Balboa on steroids! The swirling and marring isn't bad at all, as I've hard it from new and have cared for it. But it does need a clean up. But I tried foam cutting pads and it just laughed its arse off at me basically, even with Sonax Cuttmax. Now I know why.

Awesome video again so happy to have found this channel with just getting into detailing, quick question though, I went from watching the Bentley Sanding video to this, would wet sanding not of sacrificed less clear coat appose to the heavy cutting with the rotary? Thanks guys

Technically yes - however here are our reasons: a) time and efficiency - it would have taken longer to carry out all the sanding grades needed and then polish that all back (and this was a paying customer's job, and we have timeframes to work to) b) there was plenty of clearcoat available (we checked in advance and throughout - very healthy) c) we weren't aiming to create an ultra flat sanded finish (which would have left the car inconsistent, since only top surfaces were affected) d) not everyone is set up to carry out sanding tasks (and the Bentley video covers sanding quite extensively already), so taking this approach on this job gave us new content which will hopefully be useful to another part of our audience Thanks for the question! Kelly you do great videos, better than I could. Good to see some rotary action, most don't know how well the rotary can finish. Anyway does LC have any deburred wool pads aka laser treated wool. They cut not as much as a twisted wool but finish better than them and the holograms are extremely shallow on most paints. And I personally think a microfibre pad is a little overkill after using any wool pad and a rotary or DA. Now I'm not saying it's wrong. I can usually use a deburred wool or blue nano/purple foamed wool and make the holograms very very fine and remove them in one pass or two and finish out with just an sdo blue pad, two steps. Darker colours may require an LC black or other brand 70-120 ppi foam on rotary or DA. A hdo orange on lighter colours. . You have better skills in sanding than me and maybe polishing too but I feel that after 30 years experience that wool and foam is all that's needed in this case and that deburred wool is a serious improvement over conventional wools with the burrs aka hooks that mostly cause holograms though paint residue and not slowing down the machine speed on rotary could too, being removed. One thing to try is how much better any wool pad will finish down if you use a finishing polish with it, sure it won't cut enough but it shows that a runnier more lubricated polish that keeps the fibres moist and the polish liquid moving around and slowing the paint residue from clumping the fibres and killing the abrasives from doing their best work allows the wool to finish down better than most see with compounds.. Not foam level but close, better than seen for decades. I have the utmost respect for you but just wanted to offer my thoughts and experience. Holograms can be nasty, fine or virtually non existant with any quality wool if it's kept residue free and the best single polish system or compounds-polishes are used with excellent technique and control. They don't tear at the paint like the liquids of old Wool works best with something creamier and runnier not really thick, sticky and dry like many compounds are.

@@LakeCountryManufacturing there's many ways to treat paint so no way is wrong but two fibre pads in a row in my view might be too much aggression. Like using denim then wool and foam with the Asian company back in 2010, I can denim and foam in two steps or even leave hologram free finish with denim on anything medium hard to hardness paint. But I use a waterborne single polish system, one liquid for each paint hardness type so I often don't get the marring and holograms as heavy as some compounds can leave

It's interesting that even SMEs can have different opinions on machine choices. Like Kelly mentions in this video, I have always been told that the rotary is better for more aggressive cutting, then refine with a DA. Yvan Lacroix has the opposite opinion. He uses long throw DAs for heavy cutting and a rotary with black pad for refining. Essentially every jeweling technique I've seen, a rotary is used. 🤔🤷‍♂🤕

Yes the rotary is actually the better finishing tool in almost all cases but requires alot of skill to achieve it often but I've done it many many times over 30 years.

Thanks very much for this video. I have a 2016 VW GLI SEL in the Deep Black Pearl. I know it's not a high-end luxury car or a Supercar but to me this car is perfect. WIth that said the VW clear coat is insanely hard. The paint on the car is actually in pretty decent shape but there are some whirl marks and holograms that I want to correct prior to coating. I live in the United States and being fairly effective with DIY I want to correct it myself. I have some😮 hex logic pads (white, black orange), I have a Eurofiber cut/finishing pad, as well as a couple different wool pads. I have tried the AOD Papacut. On most paints this polish with the Euro fiber pad is all I need. Unfortunately that combination seems to be completely ineffective. Do you have any advice it looks like your big bird pad cut through the GTI paint which looks to be the same deep Black Pearl.. any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's not forced rotation. The black Force pad is a fantastic finishing foam pad, give it a try :)

There isn't a HDO Purple Wool... however, between the thin Purple Foamed Wool (PFW) pad and HDO Microfiber pad, on the same random orbital, I'd say there is a heavier aggression with the wool but the microfiber refines down a lot better (and is heavy enough for most jobs anyway). Here's an example of me using the HDO microfiber pad and properly refining my cutting. I couldn't do this nice a job with the PFW: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpjLgJ2kf8uqmKs
