Always need to have in mind that many people don’t mention when they talk OMP and premix is that the OMP uses obviously the same oil cycling through the engine, that means the engine is going to burn oil and if you don’t change the oil frequently, the Apex Seals are going to get dirty oil and get that carbon build up which is going to cause the springs behind every seal to get stuck and then there’s where you have to drop a couple of grands on rebuilding the engine. Keep your rotary engine oil, up to date and if you have a working OMP well be more paranoid with the oil.

How do I check if my omp is working? Probably a newb question. I've just never owned an rotory and have only driven friends.
@zeus0144 жыл бұрын
There's no warning system per se if that's what you mean. But there is a rudimentary method involving disconnecting the lines from the OMP and then - to prevent metering-oil interrupting while the engine is running with the OMP lines disconnected - manually metering oil into the intake (using an oil squirt can) at a specific rate while the engine is running at a specific RPM. Simply collect the oil being delivered from the OMP into a measuring cup for a given time frame and confirm the amount collected is within specs.

Hey, shooting cars. I like on what you said on the premixing on to when and where you should start premixing. You left out some details; which not many really know. So I decided I'll state them on here for incase you run into someone else that are running the 13 cosmo "which are in the fc or fd rx7's or really a 13b renesis "which are in the Mazda rx8's" although premixing is very essential after removing the omp; but removing the omp is a noob job, which does and is proven to gradually destroy your inner moving parts of any fantastic rotary engines. But the omp should never be removed but further more, you should premix your rotary engine(s) with the omp still active. It gives it more lubricant that the conventional oil can't fully lubricate; which is why people fall for premixing. Me myself personally; run 2 stroke outboard oil that you can buy at any store. I believe it's called supertech. But that's my personal preference on that. But also with 2 stroking. You still have to hold this in consideration, you have to use the premium; no regular gas. You can use the regular gas but u Wouldn't be able to use much 2 stroke oil. Which is; that it itself can cause a clog in the injectors. So in all, premix but don't delete the omp; also after a rebuild on original housings and plates premix, so everything is lubricated so no catastrophic failures come about.

Shell Advance synthetic snowmobile oil, Quicksilver synthetic outboard oil, Mercury synthetic outboard oil all work great. Snowmobiles and outboards are both very high load engine applications since they use constant high power settings in cruise vs automotive or lawn/garden 2 stroke oil engines. The extra few bucks for synthetic are well worth it for the reduction in carbon deposits. Basically any synthetic 2 stroke oil for snowmobiles or outboards is the way to go. Shell, Mercury/Quicksilver, skidoo/BRP XPS all use full synthetics. There are also some good dirt bike oils but it’s not as straight forward since some brands have some pretty shitty scammy products like Ipone and their strawberry scented 2 stroke smoke oil.

In my experience discarding the OMP altogether is the safest way to go. Here's why I say that: I used to use the Sohn adapter on one of my old 12A 1st gens. This was a high-mileage engine (ie: over 80,000 miles) and, at that time, I wasn't aware of just how much oil per tank of fuel was being metered in normal applications, ie: when the metering pump was known to be in good condition and not worn. I simply took for granted that the approx. 6 to 8 oz of 2-cycle oil required to top off my reservoir at every fuel fill-up was the proper consumption, never cluing in for a moment that maybe the OMP was already partially worn and was no longer pumping enough oil. About a year later I was on a long trip. I stopped to fill the tank and reservoir. Surprise! Reservoir was still full! This of course meant that my OMP had quit, and that for the last 400 miles I'd had no apex seal lube. (A subsequent tear-down of that pump confirmed my suspicions). Needless to say I pre-mixed at that fuel stop and from that point onward. When I got home I removed the OMP and the Sohn adapter and then installed a block-off plate. I then continued to pre-mix, adding 12 oz of premix to every tank of fuel. But the damage had already been done. A few months later I lost power to the rear rotor in the classic lost apex seal manner. Except: the apex seals looked fine and still moved freely when inspected through the spark plug hole. There was no coolant loss so I knew the housings hadn't warped and caused the coolant seals to fail. What then was the problem? I tore the engine down and found that, while the rotor and all seals were functional, the chrome plating from the spark plug locations to the exhaust port had detached and then been unceremoniously ejected via the exhaust port. Just a fluke of some sort? Maybe. Excessive heat build-up from maybe running lean due to a vacuum leak? Perhaps. But I wonder if maybe the excessive heat that weakened the bond between the housing and the chrome liner was caused by excessive friction due to lack of apex seal lubrication, and that the damage had been initiated prior to my switching to pre-mix. This seems plausible, especially considering that this area of the housing is the hottest to begin with, owing to the fact that the combustion/power sequence takes place there. Conclusions: 1. Premixing is the only way to confirm with certainty that your apex seals are getting the proper amount of lube. 2. especially with fuel-injected rotaries (where the OMP meters oil directly into the housing in a thin stream that only lubes the middle of the apex seals while starving the outer ends - rather than metering it into the carburetor float bowls as in the 12A engines, where it would have mixed with fuel before entering the intake charge) pre-mixing is by far the best way to go. 3. Pre-mixing 2-cycle oil extends engine life. Here's why: Cleaner-burning 2-cycle oil reduces the the type of carbon deposits that clog seals and cause them to eventually stick in their grooves. The very reason Mazda designed these engines with a metering pump was to make the rotary engine the least prone to failure due to improper maintenance - and because they knew telling new customers that they would have to mix 2-cycle oil into their fuel fill-ups would be a very hard sell. Even though (much) cleaner-burning 2-cycle oil would increase the life expectancy of the rotary, they also knew that some owners would neglect to do this or at the very least, not put enough pre-mix into their fuel fill-ups. Better to compromise by simply designing a metering pump that puts dirty and not-as-clean-burning engine oil into the induction system and then tell owners to check the oil every fuel fill-up and add a quart of oil when required.

JMZFB1312 the pump itself will still work because of the suction. The suction of the oil will pull the oil and spray it. But it's a slow and steady suction, like for instance if you were to stay at about 3-4K and your speed is 45-50 then the oil speed will increase but if you go the normal 30mph then it will just suction oil at its own speed which is best but I would recommend to premix just for aside and assurance

tc-3 ... u dont need to spend a lot of money... i actually buy the one they sell at 7-11brand.... not new to this been playing with rotarys since the 80s...as long as it is tc-3 rated na cars 1/2 oz ..turbo 1oz pre gallon .... omp is the single factor that the rx8 engine blow..when u pump engine oil mixes with the gas and creates carbon deposits over time... the rx8 exhaust port where it comes to a point carbon builds one day it will come loose....😫

Story after story no one is sure what the premix should be, by simply say the mix is the same as on a 2 stroke weeteater or chain saw you sucks

I bought a quart of IDEMITSU premix but it's synthetic. Does it matter if the oil that I put in the car normally is not synthetic? Or should I make the switch to full synthetic?

@@Bubbaj226 Already there. It's fine.
