Rotax 582 modifications #1 & reasons (gray head) rotary valve. Inverted Chinook installation.

Chinook +2: Rotax 582 (gray head) inverted engine is looked at. Winter days are very short, so time to teardown & check out the engine. ( 1400 hours ) Hope to explain modifications that I have made to the Rotax 582 engine over the 20 years that I have flown it. A look at the rotary valve in this one.

This series of videos will explain why I do not use the oil injection pump and no pressure in my cooling system. How I prevent prevent gulping to make the gray head perform like the blue head.

A great engine, I have a 583 mounted on my Kasperwing U/L. I haven't flow it yet, I still need to replace the rotary valve shaft oil seals. I don't trust the oil injection, we have always mixed 50:1 in our engines.

Has the engine failed on you in all those hours and if so what caused it?

No. It has not. No oil injection and no pressure in the cooling system are the best things you can do. Decarbon at 450 hours for sure.

Your first opening after 1400 hrs?

It is the first time opening the crankshaft for 20 years. I got the engine with 640 hours on it, and it had been de-carboned at least once. I had the engine with nothing to put it on until I built my Chinook. At that time I opened the crankshaft to examine it, as the original owner had used the oil injection for the fist part of the engines life. I don't know how many hours were run with the oil injection, but I worried that there could be some wear on the crankshaft, so I opened it up to examine it before it was installed on my Chinook. The pistons and cylinders have been removed 5 times to remove carbon and check for stuck rings since I first examined the crankshaft in 2001.
